Gorhe chaired a meeting at the Nashik divisional commissionerate to discuss safety, cleanliness and issues concerning women and children during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, with officials including divisional commissioner Praveen Gedam, collector Jalaj Sharma and police and municipal authorities in attendance.
"Factors such as better communication and accommodation, separate and safe toilets, changing rooms, Hirkani rooms (to assist lactating mothers in feeding their children) and safety measures for women, children, the physically challenged (divyang) and senior citizens should be included in the Kumbh Mela plan," Gorhe said.
She also highlighted the need for a robust system to ensure that children, women and senior citizens do not get lost during the Kumbh Mela.
She stressed on the importance of having ample helplines, help desks, kiosks and rooms available for the pilgrims.
Gorhe said cleanliness should be given top priority during the event. "The cleanliness of streets, surroundings and toilet blocks, along with ensuring clean water in the Godavari river, should be planned and executed by the authorities concerned," she said.
The state legislative council deputy chairperson also called upon the municipal corporation, zilla parishad health departments and state health officials to collaborate with the local doctors' association, as well as private and charitable hospitals, to provide health-related services, focusing on children, women and senior citizens during the Kumbh Mela. Officers from various govt agencies provided information about their planning and the actions to be taken by different govt agencies in connection with the Kumbh Mela.

Karnataka CM Responds To Fatal Bengaluru Stadium Incident, Cites Historical Precedents

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah held a press conference Thursday following the devastating stampede at a Bengaluru stadium that resulted in 11 fatalities and approximately 50 injuries. During his address to the media, the Chief Minister acknowledged the occurrence of similar incidents in the past while clarifying his position on the tragedy. "Multiple stampede incidents have taken place previously," Siddaramaiah stated, while emphasizing that his comments should not be interpreted as justification for the current incident. He specifically mentioned the Kumbh Mela stampede from earlier this year as an example, but stressed his intent was not to defend the Bengaluru tragedy. The Chief Minister explained the circumstances that led to the disaster, highlighting the massive disparity between expected and actual attendance. While the stadium's official capacity stands at 35,000 people, an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 individuals gathered at the venue, creating an unprecedented situation that overwhelmed the facility's safety measures. Siddaramaiah also drew attention to a contrasting scenario that occurred at Vidhan Soudha, where more than 100,000 people assembled without any adverse incidents. This comparison underscored the unpredictable nature of crowd management and the specific challenges faced at the stadium location. The Chief Minister's remarks came as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the stampede and work to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The incident has raised serious questions about crowd control measures and safety protocols at large public gatherings in the state.

Congress Criticised, I Didnt: On Bengaluru Stampede Deaths, Siddaramaiahs Kumbh Parallel

Bengaluru Stampede: A tragic incident unfolded in Bengaluru on Wednesday when a stampede occurred near the Chinnaswamy Stadium as fans had gathered to cheer for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for winning their first IPL trophy in 18 years. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that such incidents happen in many places and drew a parallel to the Kumbh Mela that was held earlier this year. In the stampede, 11 people lost their lives and 47 were injured. Speaking to the media about the incident, the CM added that the Congress party had criticised the incident that happened during Kumbh Mela 2025, however, the Karnataka government did not. "Such incidents happened in many places; I am not going to defend it by comparing them and saying that it happened here and there... 50-60 people died in Kumbh Mela. I did not criticise. If Congress criticises, then that is a different matter. Did I or the Karnataka government criticise?" said Karnataka CM. #WATCH | Bengaluru stampede | "Such incidents happened in many places; I am not going to defend it by comparing them and saying that it happened here and there... 50-60 people died in Kumbh Mela. "Deeply shocked by the tragic loss of lives in the stampede during the RCB victory celebrations near Chinnaswamy Stadium. A moment of joy has been eclipsed by sorrow," he posted. "I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," Karnataka CM added. He also added that a victory parade for the RCB was not allowed as a precautionary measure; however, a crowd surge near the stadium where the felicitation ceremony was taking place for the team led to the stampede. "Precautionary measures were taken by not allowing a victory parade, but the crowd surge near the stadium led to this tragedy. I urge everyone to always prioritise safety — above excitement, celebration, or crowd fervour," Siddaramaiah wrote. The Prime Minister's Office also posted on X and quoted PM Narendra Modi as saying, "The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery." The Deputy CM of Karnataka, speaking to the media, complimented the police and said, " Again I'm telling on record. I should compliment my Police officers... morning also, they wanted to have a procession, they wanted to bring a vehicle from the airport itself... Police guided us not to... that's why I rushed to the airport and ensured nothing went wrong... in Vidhana Soudha, also we were very cautious..." Shivakumar also informed that, for Thursday, except for the cabinet meeting, all programmes have been postponed.
