Review needed for east-west highway after tragic accident, says Saarani
The Perak Mentri Besar stated that state infrastructure committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has been tasked with preparing a paper to outline the necessary improvements for the road.
"It's high time we look into the alignment and the condition of the road.
"The concession for the highway has long expired, for about 40 years," he said in a press conference after opening the Perak Export Day here on Wednesday (June 12).
"The highway was built during (Malaysia's second prime minister) Tun Abdul Razak Hussein's time, to stop incursion by communists from Thailand," he said, adding that some stretches of the road could no longer be patched up.
On June 9, some 15 individuals, including Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students, were killed after a bus lost control and flipped on its side on the highway.
On Tuesday (June 10), Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi posted on Facebook that the site of the tragic accident was a key section set for rehabilitation in 2025, with an allocation of RM55mil.
Saarani also said that a new hospital would be required in Gerik due to the high frequency of accidents on the highway.
"A separate paper will be prepared by the state health committee A. Sivanesan on this," he said.
"Both papers will be forwarded to the Federal Government for their consideration," he said, adding that he would also speak to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim about the proposals required to improve the situation near the highway.
He said that another suggestion brought up during the weekly state executive council meeting included having relevant mobile units situated in the middle stretch of the highway to provide faster assistance.
"The road is long.
"It would take about an hour to reach the middle stretch of the highway (from Gerik town) if an emergency is to occur there," he said, adding that accident victims could be stuck inside an ambulance on the road for up to three hours.

Kota Kinabalu: The High Court will deliver on Oct 3 its decision on the Sabah Law Society's (SLS) substantive judicial review over Sabah's 40 per cent special grant. According to SLS counsel Dr David Fung, Judge Datuk Celestina Stuel Galid informed this during a Zoom hearing Tuesday. The decision will be delivered at 9am in open court. The court had, on July 7, heard oral arguments by the parties on the substantive merits of the judicial review and fixed Aug 7 for an e-review of the matter. The SLS filed a judicial review leave application on June 8, 2022, after the Federal Government announced on April 14, 2022 that an agreement had been reached with the State Government, and named the Federal and State governments as the first and second respondents. On Nov 11, 2022, the High Court granted SLS leave to proceed with the judicial review, while the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC), acting for the Federal Government, later secured a stay order to halt the High Court from hearing the merits of the case, pending appeal. On June 18, 2024, the Court of Appeal dismissed the Federal Government's appeal against the leave granted to SLS and directed the High Court to fix a date for the full hearing. The Federal Government then applied for leave to appeal the ruling to the Federal Court, but on Oct 17, 2024, the Federal Court dismissed the application. The SLS is seeking a declaration, among others, that the Federal Government's failure to hold a second review in 1974 with the State Government was a breach and contravention of its constitutional duty stipulated under Article 112D, Clauses (1), (3) and (4) of the Federal Constitution. It said the 40 per cent entitlement remained due and payable by the Federal Government to the State Government for each consecutive financial year for the period of 1974 to 2021, in which a failure to pay the entitlement was a breach of the fundamental right to property of the Sabah Government and ultimately, of the people of Sabah, as enshrined under Article 13 of the Federal Constitution. SLS also sought an order of mandamus directed to the respondent to hold another review with the State Government under the provisions of Article 112D of the Federal Constitution, to give effect to the payment of the 40 per cent entitlement for each consecutive financial year from 1974 to 2021 within 30 days, and to reach a decision within 90 days from the date of the order, and that the respondent pays the entitlement to the State Government or as constitutional damages for breach of Article 13 of the Federal Constitution, or both. GRS-PH cooperation formula to continue - Hajiji

RANAU (Aug 12): Chief Minister and GRS chairman Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor reiterated that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) supreme council has agreed to maintain the present formula of cooperation with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the upcoming state election. He said history has shown that a state government needs to have a strong relationship with the Federal Government. 'We want strong ties with the Federal Government. We want stability and we hope the people will understand that we are doing the best for them. To bring prosperity to them,' he said this during the ground-breaking ceremony for the Paginatan new township held at the Nunuk Ragang Memorial open-air hall, near here on Tuesday. The Chief Minister said the present GRS-PH State Government's track record of bringing progress to Sabah has been proven. 'We have more than 400 initiatives under the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya development agenda, and about 94 per cent of them have already been implemented,' he said. Hajiji said this was contrary to the opposition's claim, which he said was intended to pull wool over the people's eyes. Hajiji said the GRS-PH government had approved numerous assistance programmes for the state's education development and people's prosperity, which had never been done by other state governments before. 'This year alone, we are giving monthly assistance of RM300 to nearly 100,000 hardcore poor, and this initiative will be continued if the people returned the mandate to GRS-PH in the coming election,' he said. He also said that the GRS-PH State Government had succeeded in getting greater participation in the oil and gas sector through the historic signing of the Commercial Collaborative Agreement (CCA) with Petronas in 2021. Earlier, he said that the State Government, through the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority (SHTDA), is committed to continuing its agenda of addressing urban and rural poverty in the state through the new township development programme. He said the long-awaited Paginatan New Township project is expected to drive the local economy in the area, in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development roadmap, which at its core, aims at prioritising the well-being of the people and improving their quality of life. The 200-acre new township, located approximately 43 km from here, will be developed in five phases, involving the construction of various important amenities, including government offices, shops, low-cost housing, multi-purpose hall, library, health centre, market, police and fire stations. Once completed, the people in Paginatan would no longer have to go to Ranau or Telupid to deal with government departments, he said. Hajiji also assured that issues affecting the people in Paginatan constituency that were raised by its assemblyman, Datuk Abidin Madingkir, would be addressed. Sabah 40pct revenue claim: High Court to decide on Oct 3
KOTA KINABALU: The High Court will deliver its decision on Oct 3 on a judicial review application concerning Sabah's constitutional right to 40 per cent of the revenue derived from the state. Sabah Law Society (SLS) Immediate Past President Datuk Roger Chin said the date was set during a Zoom hearing on Tuesday. "This judicial review is a historic and significant legal action concerning Sabah's constitutional rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the Federal Constitution. "The matter has attracted substantial public interest as it addresses long-standing issues of revenue entitlement and fiscal autonomy for the state of Sabah," Chin said. He invited the public, civil society organisations, and the media to attend the open court proceedings. "The proceedings will be conducted in open court, reflecting the principles of transparency and public accountability in the administration of justice," he said. The SLS filed the judicial review against the Federal Government in June 2022. Leave was granted by the High Court in November of the same year. The Federal Government's subsequent appeals to the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court were both dismissed, in June 2024 and October 2024, respectively. This sent the case back to the High Court for a full hearing on its merits. In July, a High Court judge had set Aug 7 for an e-review to provide further directions. The SLS was represented by counsel Jeyan Marimuttu, while the Federal Government was represented by Senior Federal Counsel (SFC) Ahmad Hanir Hambaly @ Arwi, and the Sabah State Government's representative was State Attorney-General Datuk Brenndon Soh.
