Review needed for east-west highway after tragic accident, says Saarani
A thorough review of the East-West Highway or the Gerik-Jeli Road is needed to improve its condition, says Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.
The Perak Mentri Besar stated that state infrastructure committee chairman Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has been tasked with preparing a paper to outline the necessary improvements for the road.
"It's high time we look into the alignment and the condition of the road.
"The concession for the highway has long expired, for about 40 years," he said in a press conference after opening the Perak Export Day here on Wednesday (June 12).
"The highway was built during (Malaysia's second prime minister) Tun Abdul Razak Hussein's time, to stop incursion by communists from Thailand," he said, adding that some stretches of the road could no longer be patched up.
On June 9, some 15 individuals, including Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students, were killed after a bus lost control and flipped on its side on the highway.
On Tuesday (June 10), Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi posted on Facebook that the site of the tragic accident was a key section set for rehabilitation in 2025, with an allocation of RM55mil.
Saarani also said that a new hospital would be required in Gerik due to the high frequency of accidents on the highway.
"A separate paper will be prepared by the state health committee A. Sivanesan on this," he said.
"Both papers will be forwarded to the Federal Government for their consideration," he said, adding that he would also speak to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim about the proposals required to improve the situation near the highway.
He said that another suggestion brought up during the weekly state executive council meeting included having relevant mobile units situated in the middle stretch of the highway to provide faster assistance.
"The road is long.
"It would take about an hour to reach the middle stretch of the highway (from Gerik town) if an emergency is to occur there," he said, adding that accident victims could be stuck inside an ambulance on the road for up to three hours.

Compensation Has Been Paid According to WCE, the compensation process was carried out in accordance with the Land Acquisition Act 1960. On 30 September 2023, a total of RM9.8 million in compensation was awarded by the Selangor Land & Mines Office after a formal land hearing regarding Lot 15762 (11113). So far, RM7.4 million (75%) has already been disbursed: 14 landowners received direct payments. 19 landowners opted to receive payment via their appointed lawyers. Land is Now Federal Property Under Section 16 of the Land Acquisition Act, once 75% of the compensation has been paid and a Borang K is issued, the land officially becomes property of the Federal Government. From that point forward, the original owners no longer hold legal rights to occupy or remain on the land. WCE emphasized that this legal process is structured to protect the rights of all parties and has been fully followed. Court Challenges Don't Delay Possession While both the government and certain landowners have filed objections (via Borang N) to challenge the compensation amount, WCE clarified that these objections are only to settle the final figure and not to delay government possession. In previous WCE land cases, landowners who received 75% of compensation proceeded to vacate the land while the court process continued in parallel. Any claim suggesting that landowners are entitled to stay until court cases conclude is legally unfounded, WCE said. Delays Impacting National Project Despite compensation being paid since 2023, WCE stated that some landowners have stayed put for over 20 months, causing significant delays to the construction of the expressway; a major national infrastructure project connecting key highways like Federal Highway, KESAS, NKVE, and Grand Sepadu. Denies Allegations of Force or Night Operations WCE also addressed rumors circulating about aggressive or unauthorized site activity. The company stressed that all work is carried out by registered contractors, only during official working hours from 8am to 6pm. Claims of night operations or intimidation tactics were labeled as 'completely unfounded and inaccurate.' Moving Forward: Clarity Over Conflict West Coast Expressway Sdn Bhd is urging all stakeholders, including affected landowners and members of the public, to respect the legal process and refrain from circulating misinformation that could harm public trust and disrupt progress. With construction timelines at stake and public infrastructure hanging in the balance, WCE reaffirmed that it would not hesitate to take legal action if necessary to defend its integrity and ensure the expressway project moves forward responsibly. Perak provides RM5k aid to families of FRU officers killed in crash

MCA leaders warn of risks in SST expansion
GEORGE TOWN: The Federal Government risks triggering widespread contract disputes and burdening consumers with cascading costs if it proceeds with plans to expand the Sales and Services Tax (SST) from July 1, say two Penang MCA leaders. Penang MCA secretary Yeoh Chin Kah warned that many construction contracts were signed before the policy was announced, lacking clauses to account for the additional 6% tax. "Without clear guidelines, disputes are inevitable. Some projects may even stall. The consequences could be disastrous," he said on Friday (June 13). He said applying SST to the construction sector would further strain an industry already grappling with rising material costs and labour shortages, potentially derailing national recovery efforts. Yeoh urged the government to reconsider the timeline and proposed that SST only apply to the service portion of construction contracts. Materials and equipment, he said, should be exempted. "The sector runs on thin margins. Sudden tax changes mid-contract will destabilise the entire ecosystem," he said. He also criticised the RM1.5mil annual revenue threshold as unfair to small contractors who handle low-value jobs but may cross the mark cumulatively. "Tax should be based on individual contract value. This is about fairness and survival for SMEs," Yeoh added. He said non-profit organisations, including schools, hospitals, and temples, should receive the same SST exemptions as residential projects, warning that extra tax burdens would harm public welfare. Penang MCA Election Preparation & Scrutiny Committee vice-chairman Chan Wooi Jin echoed these concerns, saying the SST expansion will not only impact industries but also raise the cost of daily essentials for ordinary Malaysians. "Essential items like apples, oranges, and lemons are not luxuries. For many families, they are a daily source of nutrition. Taxing them is unfair," he said. He noted that unlike the previous GST system, SST lacks an input tax credit mechanism and may result in multiple layers of taxation passed down to consumers. "Any tax reform must be transparent, people-centric, and able to distinguish between basic needs and luxuries. The rakyat shouldn't have to pay for fiscal missteps," Chan said. Both leaders called on the government to engage with stakeholders and ensure policies are grounded in economic realities, not rushed decisions that threaten livelihoods and public trust.
