Judge blocks request to extradite teacher over child sex offence

A British teacher accused of sexually assaulting a young child while teaching in Turkey will not be extradited, following a court's decision to discharge the request.Turkey had requested the extradition of Rebecca Richardson, 54, from Herefordshire, after she was accused of sexually assaulting a child at an international school in Istanbul in 2019.At a hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, Judge Paul Goldspring discharged Richardson from the extradition request.The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has been granted two weeks to appeal the decision in the High Court.
A spokesperson for the CPS said: "On 25 June 2025, a district judge sitting at Westminster Magistrates' Court discharged Ms Richardson from an extradition request made by the government of the Republic of Turkey."The CPS will now consider the judgement carefully."Ms Richardson, who lives in Cradley, near Ledbury, was released on bail ahead of the next hearing at the same court on 9 July.The court previously heard the teacher left the UK in 2000 and spent nearly 20 years living abroad.She lived in Turkey between 2013 and 2019, and previously lived in Mexico and Hong Kong, the hearing was told.

Paul Gallagher, 59, who lives in East Finchley, north London, was charged by Scotland Yard following an investigation that began last year. As well as rape, he is also accused of sexual assault, coercive control and making threats to kill and is due to appear in court next month. News of the charges come as Oasis continue with their sold-out reunion tour. They are scheduled to play three more dates at Wembley before moving on to Edinburgh and then Dublin and then overseas. Paul, who is one year older than Noel and seven years older than Liam, grew up with the pair in Burnage, Manchester, but has never been involved with the band. He lives in a flat in north London that was bought by Noel in 2004 and has worked as a DJ and photographer. A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: 'Paul Gallagher, 59, of Manor Park Road, East Finchley, has been charged with rape, coercive and controlling behaviour, three counts of sexual assault, three counts of intentional strangulation, two counts of making a threat to kill and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. 'The offences are reported to have taken place between 2022-2024. The charges follow an investigation which commenced in 2024. A woman is being supported by specially trained officers.' Mr Gallagher is due to appear before Westminster magistrates' court on Wednesday Aug 27.
