"I hope he stops when I'm done eating my meal, because I'm eating my meal" - Charles Barkley had issues with Monaco royalty's dining protocols
The Dream Team that competed in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics was, without a shadow of a doubt, sports royalty. A group stacked with bona fide basketball legends such as Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, they were cheered and adored wherever they went.
Despite their reputation as the kings of the court, their legendary titles seemed insignificant compared to those held by the princes who reigned over Monaco. And so, as the team prepared to have dinner with Prince Rainier and Prince Albert during their stay in the popular principality renowned as the playground of the ultra-rich and famous, the players were briefed on how to behave in the presence of royalty.
This also included how and when to eat — something that Charles Barkley had an issue with.
High-brow behavior
Dealing with members of a royal family requires a certain level of etiquette and decorum, especially when it comes to dining. According to Kim Bohuny, the NBA's manager of international events, she briefed the players and coaches on the customs and expectations of dining with royalty.
"We had dinner with Prince Rainier and Prince Albert. There's very strict protocol," Bohuny shared. "You know, you can't eat until Prince Rainier eats — things like that. We were reviewing it with the team beforehand, and I think it shocked some of our guys."
While many understood what was expected of them, some, like Barkley and Karl Malone, were shocked. Craig Miller, Team USA Basketball's director of public relations, still remembers how the legendary forward reacted to the information he received.
"They said if the prince puts his fork down and stops eating, you all better stop eating," Craig narrated. "And Charles said, 'Well, I hope he stops when I'm done eating my meal, because I'm eating my meal.'"Malone was equally shocked
Bohuny was sharing all these in perfect English. However, she might as well have been speaking in a foreign language with how little things made sense, especially to those who grew up just sitting at the table and immediately chowing down after saying grace.
One such player was Malone, who grew up in Summerfield, Louisiana — a community in northeast Claiborne Parish.
"I'm from the country. Our etiquette is pretty much, 'Pass me the beans,' and we pass it down," he said.
Malone didn't mean any disrespect to the established customs of fine dining, but it was simply how he was raised. Spoons, forks, plates — that's all there was to it. No fluff, no fancy words or complicated courses. Just good food and good company.
"It took me a while to understand the rules. This glass was on this side, and this fork was for this…" he continued. "You know what? Let me eat. You're talking about a fish out of water — that's how I felt. I had a nice suit on, I guess."
Considering the fact that there weren't any international incidents reported during the Dream Team's brief stay in Monaco, it's safe to say everyone managed to navigate the table settings just fine. This story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 8, 2025, where it first appeared.

Leverkusen continue to scramble to increase their undermanned squad ahead of the forthcoming Bundesliga campaign. The recent confirmation of longtime keeper and captain Lukas Hradecky's move to AS Monaco now leaves head coach Erik ten Hag with only 23 professionals with which to work. Hradecky's loss is at the very least expected to be rectified shortly by the signing of German keeper Janis Blaswich away from RB Leipzig. Blaswich will serve as the back-up to new club No. 1 Mark Flekken. GGFN |

Manchester United sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig in deal worth up to £73.7m
Manchester United have completed the signing of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko in a deal worth up to £73.7million. After finishing 15th in the Premier League last season – their worst top-flight campaign in 51 years – and losing the Europa League final, the Red Devils have spent the summer undertaking an eye-catching rebuild. Ruben Amorim's men signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves for £62.5m and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo for £65m plus £6m in add-ons, with their attack further bolstered by the arrival of Sesko. The 22-year-old has signed a deal until 2030 at United, who the PA news agency understands are paying Leipzig 76.5m euros (£66.3m) plus a potential 8.5m euros (£7.4m) in add-ons. 'The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future,' Sesko said. 'When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon. 'From the moment that I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment that the club has created. It is clearly the perfect place to reach my maximum level and fulfil all of my ambitions. 'I cannot wait to start learning from Ruben and connecting with my team-mates to achieve the success that we all know we are capable of together.' Sesko was unveiled to the Old Trafford crowd at Saturday's friendly against Fiorentina. The Slovenia international has long been on the Red Devils' radar, stretching back to when he left Domzale for RB Salzburg in 2019, and scored 21 goals in all competitions last season. Newcastle made the first move for Sesko this summer but the player favoured a move to United, who open their Premier League campaign at home to Arsenal next Sunday. Director of football Jason Wilcox said: 'Benjamin possesses a rare combination of electrifying pace and the ability to physically dominate defenders, making him one of the most exceptional young talents in world football. 'We have followed Benjamin's career closely; all of our data analysis and research concluded that he has the required qualities and personality to thrive at Manchester United. 'Working under the guidance of Ruben and our excellent performance team, Benjamin is joining the perfect environment to support him to reach his world-class potential. 'The desire that all of our new signings have shown to join the club this summer highlights the appeal and stature of Manchester United as we continue to build and develop a team capable of challenging for the biggest honours.' United boss Amorim was similarly delighted to see Sesko arrive at Old Trafford. 'He has the characteristics that we needed,' he told MUTV. 'Ben is a player that, with all the information that we have, we need to stop the guy from working – it is not the opposite! That is also important. 'He is really young, he is good in the air, he is good running the channels and he is good on the ball, so I think he has great potential. I think he can improve a lot. 'For sure, he is going to feel at home in our club. He is the right character in this group so we are really, really happy to have him.'
