US tariff moves to have limited impact on Indian banks: Report
India's diversified and low exports will ensure banks in the country have a limited impact of the US tariff moves, a global rating agency said on Wednesday.
Moody's Investors Service
said its outlook on the Indian banking system remains stable on favourable operating environment driven by government capital expenditure, tax cuts for middle-income groups, and monetary easing to boost consumption.
"India's relatively low and more diversified exports to the US are expected to limit the credit impact on its banks," the agency noted.
The agency, however, said that banks' asset quality is likely to "deteriorate moderately" after substantial improvements in recent years, due to an increase in stress in unsecured retail loans, microfinance loans, and small business loans.

Banks' profitability will get impacted when compared with FY25, it said, adding that the impact will be limited as the declines in net interest margins (NIMs) are likely to be gradual.
Banks will maintain strong capitalisation, supported by internal capital generation that keeps pace with asset growth and easy access to a deep domestic equity market.

Meanwhile, the agency's unit Icra Ratings said the non-bank lenders' capital position and healthy earnings performance will help them absorb headwinds on loan quality and regulatory developments.
The domestic rating agency estimated them to grow by 16-18 per cent in FY26, slower than the rate seen in previous few fiscals.
Spillover of stress into secured asset segment remains a key monitorable, it added.

Ola's artificial intelligence arm Krutrim is looking to get its base infrastructure, from semiconductors to hardware, fast and cost-effective as the company scales up its AI services, senior vice-president and head of business A Navendu said. Krutrim, which raised $50 million in 2024, has seen few takers for its AI products due to poor documentation and lack of adequate technical maturity, ET reported earlier this month, citing several developers and startup founders. Navendu, who was previously chief information officer at Ola Electric , told ET that one of the biggest challenges in the country is the lack of infrastructure for training large models, as only 10,000 GPUs are currently available, and the rest of the GPUs under the IndiaAI Mission are still to be delivered. 'If you look at (US AI startup) Grok, it is trained on 100,000 GPUs and (ChatGPT developer) OpenAI, 200,000 every quarter. You have to cut some slack for Indian companies,' he said. 'If you look at data on the web, only 1% of it is Indian languages whereas the Indian population is 20% of the group. If you want to build for India, you need to scrape, digitise, scam and collect data. This is a challenge.' The company is working on a multibillion parameter model. To address the compute needs, it will use a mixture of its own and IndiaAI GPUs and will also explore building its own data centres, Navendu told ET. He did not disclose the details. Navendu spoke to ET on the sidelines of the launch of the company's agentic AI assistant Kruti, a consumer application that is autonomous and can take action on behalf of the user. It is currently integrated with Ola's ecosystem offering four services, including cab booking, food delivery, bill payment and image generation, with plans to expand further. The company is also in talks with multiple services across healthcare and shopping use cases. Sunit S, head of product design, said it will also pursue partnerships with ONDC, which offers services such as metro tickets and recharge.

Ludhiana: Union minister of petroleum and natural gas, Hardeep Puri , on Thursday, said that Punjab's development had been hindered by the state government's alleged failure to implement people-centric schemes of the central government. Puri, who was in Ludhiana to campaign for party candidate Jiwan Gupta, said that this prevented Punjab residents from receiving benefits available to citizens in other states across the country. Addressing a press conference, Puri emphasised that while India made significant strides in development, including advancements in the space sector, Punjab did not fully benefit from central welfare programmes. He attributed this to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's non-implementation of these initiatives, citing the Ayushman Bharat Healthcare programme as a regrettable example. "All central schemes are available throughout the country but if these schemes aren't implemented in states like Punjab, it's a matter of deep regret," Puri said. He also underscored India's robust economic growth rate of 6.5%, which is significantly higher than the approximately 2% growth rates of the UK, Japan, and Germany. This rapid growth, he suggested, positions India to become the world's third-largest economy by 2026, with its current economy standing at 4.3 trillion dollars.
