Egypt Reopens Historic Sinai Valleys to Tourists After 10 Years
In the heart of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, a silence stretching more than a decade is about to be broken. Rugged valleys, hidden between towering granite peaks and swept by winds carrying whispers of history, are opening once more to the world.
Egypt has announced the long-awaited reopening of several historic valleys around the sacred city of Saint Catherine in South Sinai, signaling a powerful revival for one of the country's most unique and spiritual destinations.
Khaled Mubarak, Governor of South Sinai, said that both Egyptian and international tourists can once again visit these valleys for activities like safaris, hiking, and camping.
The decision, he explained, is part of Egypt's sweeping 'Great Transfiguration' project, an ambitious plan to transform Saint Catherine into an international beacon of eco-tourism, religious pilgrimage, and desert adventure.
The valleys now welcoming visitors — among them Wadi Sheikh Awad, Wadi Talaha, Wadi Zaghra, Wadi Al-Talaa, the Mountains of Al-Arba'een, and Al-Saba'eya — are more than mere landscapes. They are ancient corridors that have witnessed monks, Bedouins, traders, and pilgrims for centuries. Their sandstone walls glow pink at dawn and burnished gold at sunset, creating a timeless backdrop for the stories of prophets and civilizations. Yet for over ten years, these valleys remained closed to visitors, a measure tied partly to security concerns and preservation efforts. The decision to reopen them represents not only a tourism revival but also a restoration of cultural and spiritual connections.
Saint Catherine itself is nestled beneath some of Egypt's highest peaks, including Mount Sinai — revered in Islamic tradition as the place where God spoke to Prophet Moses (peace be upon him).
Nearby stands Mount Saint Catherine, the tallest peak in Egypt, soaring over 2,600 meters above sea level. The city's ancient monastery, rugged wilderness, and serene silence have long attracted spiritual seekers and adventurers from around the globe.
The Egyptian government hopes that the 'Great Transfiguration' project — with an estimated investment of around 4 billion Egyptian pounds (approximately \$83 million) — will bring millions of tourists annually to this sacred corner of the country.
Plans include new infrastructure, visitor services, and preservation efforts, all designed to protect the area's fragile ecosystem while opening it to sustainable tourism. Officials envision Saint Catherine as Egypt's capital of eco-tourism and a global hub for religious and cultural travel.
As the valleys reopen, there is a sense of both anticipation and reverence. For those who venture into Sinai's vast silence, the desert's secrets — hidden for a decade — are waiting to be rediscovered under the same stars that once guided prophets, nomads, and explorers through this land of awe and mystery.

No cancellation of land Hajj for Egyptians: Tourism federation - Society
The Egyptian Tourism Federation (ETF) on Tuesday denied media reports alleging the cancellation of overland tourist Hajj programs, stating the claims were based on comments made by an individual masquerading as a federation member. In recent days, several news articles circulated, alleging that overland Hajj programs have been cancelled due to upcoming regulations for Egyptian tourist pilgrimages set to be announced soon. The ETF disavowed any association with such remarks, asserting that neither the federation nor any of its board members has released any official statements concerning this matter. The individual referenced in these reports 'is not authorised to speak on the federation's behalf or to issue press statements on any topic pertaining to the tourism industry,' the statement read. The federation said it has initiated an investigation into the matter, according to the statement. The ETF, an industry advocate, also confirmed that no such decisions have been made or announced regarding the cancellation of overland Hajj programs. 'Upon consulting the relevant chamber, it was confirmed that the regulations governing the Hajj are still under discussion and have not yet reached their final form,' the press release read. The statement further noted that the Federation contacted the Egyptian Travel Agents Association (ETTA) to verify the information, and officials confirmed that no decisions have yet been issued regarding land pilgrimage. 'The regulatory framework is still under preparation,' the federation added, explaining that the ETTA's Religious Tourism Committee is currently holding discussions with pilgrimage-operating travel companies to define the key elements of the upcoming Hajj regulations. Ongoing talks are also taking place within the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities' Supreme Committee for Hajj and Umrah to finalise the regulations before presenting them to the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities. According to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, a total of 7,500 pilgrims travelled overland, constituting 18 percent of Egypt's tourist Hajj quota of 40,672. Hajj, one of Islam's Five Pillars, is the annual pilgrimage to Mecca required once in a lifetime for all able and financially capable Muslims, though many undertake it more than once. 60,000 Mobile Phones Suspended Amidst Crackdown on Undeclared Imports

Jul 29, 2025 Around 60,000 mobile phones have been temporarily suspended by the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) as part of a nationwide effort to enforce mobile import regulations and curb customs violations. The suspensions were made under a new electronic monitoring system launched on January 1st, 2025, in cooperation with the Egyptian Customs Authority. The system is designed to regulate mobile phone imports, track registration and taxation, and prevent the circulation of devices brought into the country illegally or without proper declaration. Phones flagged by the system will remain deactivated until verification procedures are completed. According to the NTRA, 47,000 devices initially suspended have since been reactivated after being confirmed as compliant, while another 13,000 remain suspended due to confirmed violations. The NTRA also reaffirmed that travellers are still permitted to bring one mobile phone into the country without paying taxes, provided the device is declared at the point of entry. Since the system's launch, 650,000 devices have been exempted under this rule. However, a recent review found that some exemptions were acquired through unofficial channels, prompting further scrutiny. The NTRA says the electronic system enables better oversight of mobile phone imports, helping to reduce smuggling and ensure that all phones activated on Egyptian networks have met customs and regulatory requirements.

Egypt Operates Second Special Train for Sudanese Voluntary Return
According to the United Nations, over 1.3 million Sudanese have returned to their areas of origin since the start of the conflict in Sudan. Jul 28, 2025 National Railways Authority has announced the operation of a second special train to facilitate the voluntary return of Sudanese citizens currently residing in Egypt, following the completed operations of their first special train earlier this month. The move comes in response to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has displaced millions since April 2023. Train number 1940 departed from Cairo Station on Monday, July 28th, and then arrived at High Dam Station in Aswan on the same day. From there, returnees are expected to continue their journey into Sudan via river or overland routes. The special service includes an additional baggage carriage and will run a return trip from Aswan to Cairo as train number 1945, scheduled to depart at 8:30 PM on Tuesday, July 29th. Egyptian authorities have waived travel penalties and are providing logistical support for Sudanese nationals in coordination with the voluntary return committee. Egypt currently hosts more than 5.5 million Sudanese nationals, and is the largest host country for Sudanese refugees. According to the United Nations, over 1.3 million Sudanese have returned to their areas of origin since the start of the conflict, including approximately 320,000 returning from Egypt and South Sudan. However, many parts of Sudan remain insecure, and returns continue to be undertaken on a voluntary basis.
