Carson Hocevar wins first career NASCAR Cup pole at Texas
Decked out in Texas-appropriate attire, Carson Hocevar put his No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet on the pole for Sunday's WURTH 400 presented by LIQUI MOLY at Texas Motor Speedway (3:30 p.m. ET on FS1, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
With the second fastest lap in the era of the Gen 7 car, Hocevar toured the 1.5 mile track in 28.175 seconds (191.659 mph) to edge 2023 race winner William Byron (191.564 mph) for the top starting position by 0.014 seconds.
The Busch Light Pole Award is the first of Hocevar's career, and at age 22, he's the youngest-ever pole winner at Texas.
Clad in a firesuit designed as a cowboy outfit--courtesy of sponsor Chili's--and sporting a black 10-gallon hat, Hocevar reveled in the moment after his lap stood up to all comers.
"Having the cowboy outfit--what better place to be on the pole," Hocevar said. "I'm normally so hard on myself, and I didn't think I nailed that lap at all, but I'm super proud of this team.
"I'm so proud, because I've never had the No. 1 pit stall, and I've had a lot of issues with pit road and we've had a lot of bad luck. So I finally get the No. 1 pit stall, and I'm pumped about that."
Austin Cindric, last Sunday's Talladega winner, qualified third at 191.523 mph in a closely compacted field. Larson, the last driver to make an attempt, was fourth at 191.421 mph.
With 10 drivers to go, Ty Gibbs topped the chart at 191.293 mph, but Michael McDowell, Hocevar's teammate, eclipsed his time by 0.006 seconds in a lap at 191.333 mph.
"Obviously, with Michael going out and putting up a really good lap time, I felt like we were faster than him in practice, and that gave me a little bit of confidence that our stuff was going to be as quick, if not hopefully a little quicker," Hocevar said.
McDowell will start fifth on Sunday, with Gibbs sixth. Josh Berry, three-time Texas winner Denny Hamlin, Bubba Wallace and AJ Allmendinger completed the top 10 on the grid.
One driver who left the session with regret was Cindric, who felt he could have gone faster.
"I feel like I left a pole lap out there," he said. "I sent it into Turn 1 and didn't quite get to the bottom and didn't quite maximize my exit. I guess I can be happy with where we are at, but I definitely feel like you want to do it all.
"We're in a great spot for (Sunday) and should have a good pit stall, so I feel good about where we are. We'll try to go get another one."
Defending race winner Chase Elliott will start 29th.
Note: Since the Gen 7 car was introduced in 2022, only Christopher Bell at Michigan International Speedway in 2023 has run a faster lap than Hocevar at Texas. Bell's speed at the 2.0-mile track was 193.382 mph.

Texas Longhorns power couple pushes each other in football, softball
It has been a long, hard year for CJ Baxter. The Texas Longhorns running back injured his knee in last year's fall camp and missed the entire 2024 season. But another University of Texas star athlete has been helping the Florida native with his comeback. Baxter's girlfriend is UT Softball star Mia Scott. The newly minted national champion played with a torn ACL in the Women's College World Series. On that injured knew, Scott hit a grand slam in the national title clinching game and was named to the WCWS All-Tournament Team. According to Baxter, Scott has been motivating him through his own rehab. "She pushed me," Baxter said after practice on Thursday. "When there were days I didn't want to get up and feel amazing, she made me get up." Baxter says he was amazed at Scott's toughness in the WCWS. "She's tough," he said. "She played on the torn ACL. I don't know how she did it. But she's super tough." The competitive pair have a friendly rivalry over their knee injury common bond. "She's always messing with me about it," Baxter said. "She'll be like, 'How come I can play on it but you can't?' But, I mean, she didn't have surgery. She was able to do it. I had surgery. I had a little set back." Forecast to be the lead back last season, before tearing both his LCL and ACL, Baxter was recently named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List. The Doak Walker is given to the best running back in the nation. The best motivation Scott has given Baxter is sitting in their bedroom. "Since she's won the national championship, her trophy is on my nightstand," he said. "Every morning when I wake up, that's the first thing I see. She's like, I got to go win one." The Orlando, FL back says he's ready to go this season. "I joked with my dad I was more excited to get tackled than score a touchdown," he said. "I feel great. One day at a time is the big saying I like to say every day.' Baxter is happy to be back and ready after missing a year's worth of football. 'I'm not even going to sit here and sugar coat it," he said. "The first two months were brutal sitting at home and watching the games from my couch because I couldn't move around as much, it was hard for me to watch football. But man, when I look back on it now, of course I'm not glad I got injured, but I'm grateful for what it did for me, mentally, physically and spiritually." If Baxter is back to 100%, he could have a huge season. 'I feel like I put in the work in my rehab not to have any doubts, I haven't doubted myself at all,' Baxter said. Countdown to Kickoff: Baxter is Back!
The man that Longhorns fans are as excited to see as anyone not named Manning. CJ Baxter was the No. 1 RB in the country in the 2023 class and he came into Austin looking like it. He began the season playing second fiddle to Johnathan Brooks, but after Brooks went down against TCU, Baxter took over and took the world by storm. 2023 Stats: 138 carries, 659 rushing yards, 5 TDs; 156 receiving yards 2023 was the precursor to what was supposed to be a 1,000+ yard season in 2024, but around this time a year ago, Baxter tore his LCL and ACL and lost the whole season. It was a massive blow to the Texas run game, which continued to rear its ugly head a year ago, but he's ready to roll in 2025. The question becomes how quickly will he be ready? It sounds like everything is going well with the recovery, but Sarikisian and the coaching staff are in no rush to get him back in full swing. That makes sense with how productive Tre Wisner was a year ago and the confidence in a guy like Jerrick Gibson. That being said, this is a guy that once he is fully healthy can be one of the best running backs in the entire country. From there, you have to figure out where you want to fit him into the equation. It sounds like Christian Clark is making quick progress, Jerrick Gibson continues to improve and Wisner is the RB1 right now. It is a fantastic problem for Steve Sarkisian to have, but it will be a tough thing to juggle the right way. If Sarkisian and company can put together the right split and introduction for Baxter, he will be very productive. CJ Baxter became one of the Longhorns fans favorites during his freshman year, and many feel like they were robbed of a remarkable sophomore campaign. This year, he's back and seems to be as healthy as can be hoped, but the tightrope walk of wanting him on the field while also wanting to keep him healthy is going to define Baxter's season in 2025. So, it will take time for CJ to get back up to speed, but he wants to be on the field and the fans want to see him. Baxter has looked really strong throughout the opening days of fall camp, and I fully expect him to be on the field during the Ohio State game. Fans will be waiting with bated breath to see #4 trot onto the field in Columbus. As long as CJ Baxter gets healthier and more comfortable as the season goes on, it'll be hard to find a better backfield than the one in Austin. The running back group is deep and very talented, and that will only get more true as Baxter finds his way back to full strength. As fun as the RB room is, the WR room might be the most interesting on the entire team, and we will jump into it tomorrow. Longhorns Running Back duo recognized on Doak Walker Award watch list
The Texas Longhorns running back duo of CJ Baxter and Quintrevion Wisner is making headlines. On Tuesday, the Longhorns stars were selected to the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award. Each year, the award is given to the nation's most outstanding college running back. For Baxter, this is not unfamiliar territory. It is the second time during his college career that he has earned a spot on the watch list. In three seasons with the Longhorns, the Florida native played in 12 games and made six starts. While he missed all of last season after sustaining a season-ending injury during fall camp, he has impressed when healthy. During the 2023 campaign, the Edgewater High School product recorded 659 rushing yards on 138 carries. He also found the end zone five times while averaging 4.8 yards per carry. The talented running back was a valuable asset in the passing game, hauling in 24 catches for 156 yards. As Baxter looks to provide a boost in his return, Texas will also have Wisner as a weapon to turn to. He landed a spot on the preseason watch list following a stellar 2024 campaign. In 15 games last season, the Texas native set career highs in carries with 226 and rushing yards with 1,064. The DeSoto High School product also averaged 70.9 yards per game. With Baxter healthy and Wisner back in Texas, the Longhorns' running game is in good hands. They can both frustrate defensive coordinators with their speed and make an impact in the passing game. That is why they find themselves in the mix for one of the most prestigious awards in college football. While the Longhorns duo is on adding a national title to their resumes, they will also be watching how voting breaks down. The winner of the Doak Walker Award will be revealed on The Home Depot College Football Awards in December. Wisner and Baxter are hoping that when the final votes are cast, they will have a reason to celebrate.
