NASCAR hits RFK, Chris Buescher with points penalty after Kansas bumper violation

Chris Buescher finished eighth at Kansas Speedway after starting on the front row, but he and Carson Hocevar had their cars randomly selected to go back to the NASCAR R&D Center for further inspection. While the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet was cleared without issue, Buescher's No. 17 RFK Racing Ford Mustang was not nearly as fortunate. NASCAR found the team in violation of of the following rule: "Sections 14.1.C: Overall Assembled Vehicle Rules; 14.5.4.G: Front Bumper Cover." Per contributor Bozi Tatarevic, "The rule allows bumpers to be reinforced on the inside up to a 2-inch border around the foam, and they likely went further than that." Advertisement As a result, the No. 17 team has been hit with a $75,000 fine and crew chief Scott Graves has been suspended for the next two races, including the All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro and the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Buescher has been docked 60 driver and owner points, as well as five playoff points. Buescher is winless after 12 races this year, but he remains inside the playoffs, sitting solidly 12th in the standings. This latest points penalty will drop him all the way down to 24th. He was 33 points above the cut-line, but is now 27 points out. Additionally, the loss of playoff points leaves him in the negative, having not scored any yet this season. Carson Hocevar wins first career NASCAR Cup pole at Texas

FORT WORTH, Tex.--Ride 'em, cowboy. Decked out in Texas-appropriate attire, Carson Hocevar put his No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet on the pole for Sunday's WURTH 400 presented by LIQUI MOLY at Texas Motor Speedway (3:30 p.m. ET on FS1, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). With the second fastest lap in the era of the Gen 7 car, Hocevar toured the 1.5 mile track in 28.175 seconds (191.659 mph) to edge 2023 race winner William Byron (191.564 mph) for the top starting position by 0.014 seconds. The Busch Light Pole Award is the first of Hocevar's career, and at age 22, he's the youngest-ever pole winner at Texas. Clad in a firesuit designed as a cowboy outfit--courtesy of sponsor Chili's--and sporting a black 10-gallon hat, Hocevar reveled in the moment after his lap stood up to all comers. "Having the cowboy outfit--what better place to be on the pole," Hocevar said. "I'm normally so hard on myself, and I didn't think I nailed that lap at all, but I'm super proud of this team. "I'm so proud, because I've never had the No. 1 pit stall, and I've had a lot of issues with pit road and we've had a lot of bad luck. So I finally get the No. 1 pit stall, and I'm pumped about that." Austin Cindric, last Sunday's Talladega winner, qualified third at 191.523 mph in a closely compacted field. Larson, the last driver to make an attempt, was fourth at 191.421 mph. With 10 drivers to go, Ty Gibbs topped the chart at 191.293 mph, but Michael McDowell, Hocevar's teammate, eclipsed his time by 0.006 seconds in a lap at 191.333 mph. "Obviously, with Michael going out and putting up a really good lap time, I felt like we were faster than him in practice, and that gave me a little bit of confidence that our stuff was going to be as quick, if not hopefully a little quicker," Hocevar said. McDowell will start fifth on Sunday, with Gibbs sixth. Josh Berry, three-time Texas winner Denny Hamlin, Bubba Wallace and AJ Allmendinger completed the top 10 on the grid. One driver who left the session with regret was Cindric, who felt he could have gone faster. "I feel like I left a pole lap out there," he said. "I sent it into Turn 1 and didn't quite get to the bottom and didn't quite maximize my exit. I guess I can be happy with where we are at, but I definitely feel like you want to do it all. "We're in a great spot for (Sunday) and should have a good pit stall, so I feel good about where we are. We'll try to go get another one." Defending race winner Chase Elliott will start 29th. Note: Since the Gen 7 car was introduced in 2022, only Christopher Bell at Michigan International Speedway in 2023 has run a faster lap than Hocevar at Texas. Bell's speed at the 2.0-mile track was 193.382 mph. --By Reid Spencer, NASCAR Wire Service. Special to Field Level Media. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

NASCAR Cup Series at Texas: Starting lineup, TV schedule for May 4 race

The NASCAR Cup Series is heading to Texas on May 4 for the second and final time this season, the first coming at Circuit of the Americas in Austin. Carson Hocevar is on pole for the WURTH 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, his first in the Cup Series. Advertisement William Byron is on the outside of the front row to start the race. Chase Elliott won last year's stop at Texas Motor Speedway, marking his last win in the Cup Series. Texas is always one of the difficult tracks to gauge with how the tires react and how the grooves work into the track as the race goes along. The May 3 practice session appeared as if cars could run the low groove well, but passing will be a question during the race. If the May 3 NASCAR Xfinity Series race was any indication, there could be plenty of passing in the middle groove. LEGEND OF L.W. WRIGHT PART 2: The long Talladega con: Could L.W. Carson Hocevar earns first NASCAR Cup pole, William Byron 2nd in Texas

Setting a fast time of 28.174s, Carson Hocevar was able to hang on for his first career pole in the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet on Saturday. It's a front row lockout for Team Chevy with William Byron putting the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in second, just 0.014s behind Hocevar's pole lap. Hocevar was also the fastest driver in the practice session that immediately preceded qualifying. "It's really big," smiled Hocevar. "It's really big for these guys. It's super impressive for what they've been able to do. This is the same group on pit road, off pit road, at the shop -- everyone working on the No. 77 is exactly the same as when I started here. It's just huge where we've been able to bring this team." Advertisement Hocevar admitted that he can be hard on himself at times, and didn't think he "nailed that lap," despite going to the top of the board. "Super proud of this team," he continued. "I've never been number one pit stall and I've had a lot of issue s on pit road. We've had a lot of bad luck, so I finally get the number one pit stall and I'm pumped about that." Carson Hocevar, Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Carson Hocevar, Spire Motorsports Chevrolet James Gilbert / Getty Images James Gilbert / Getty Images Last weekend's Talladega race winner Austin Cindric timed in third, leading the Ford camp. Kyle Larson was fourth and Hocevar's Spire Motorsports teammate Michael McDowell was fifth. Ty Gibbs led the Toyotas in sixth, followed by Josh Berry, Denny Hamlin, Bubba Wallace, and AJ Allmendinger. Advertisement Defending Texas winner Chase Elliott will start deep in the field, only going fast enough for 29th. The good news is that he came from 24th on the grid to win here last year. He's not the only notable driver with some work to do on Sunday either with Ryan Blaney 24th, Kyle Busch 26th, Joey Logano 27th, Brad Keselowski 30th, and Ross Chastain 31st. There were no incidents during the qualifying session. History shows that the pole-sitter has not been able to translate that into a Cup win at Texas in three years of the Nex Gen era, which is something Hocevar will surely be hoping to change tomorrow. Perhaps the practice here is paying off: Hocevar has already been on track racing this weekend, as the only Cup driver to also run the Truck race on Friday night. He was solidly in second place when a battery issue derailed his night.
