Parvathy Thiruvothu slams Kerala CM over inaction on Hema Committee report: ‘Can we focus on the actual reason?'
Taking to her Instagram Stories, Parvathy tagged Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. She went on to add, 'Now can we focus on the ACTUAL reason this committee was formed? Putting policies in place to help make regulations in the industry? What is happening with that? No rush, eh? It's only been five and a half years since the report was submitted.'
On June 3, a report from The Hindu stated that the Kerala Police decided to drop the cases which had come up from the Hema Committee report which had detailed sexual exploitation in the Malayalam film industry. 'According to official sources, despite repeated summons by both the SIT and the court, the survivors declined to provide statements in connection with the cases,' added the report.
The Hema Committee report put the spotlight on the issues faced by women in the Malayalam film industry and came with shocking accounts of harassment, exploitation, and ill-treatment being faced by women.
The report stated that female actors faced harassment, including instances where the doors of their rooms were knocked on by intoxicated individuals in the film industry. In fact, many of the women expressed reluctance to complain due to fear. It also reported a lack of basic amenities such as toilets for women, adding that junior artists are treated 'worse than slaves in Malayalam cinema'.

Police remove protesting conservancy workers in Chennai, shift them to marriage halls
In a late night operation on Wednesday (August 13, 2025), the police detained all the conservancy workers of the Greater Chennai Corporation, who have been staging a protest for the past 13 days demanding that privatisation of conservancy operations be dropped in two zones of the city. Primary school teachers to boycott classes, go on an indefinite strike from September 3
Around 1.4 lakh government primary school teachers (PST) have decided to boycott classes and go on an indefinite strike from September 3 demanding the fulfilment of various demands. The Karnataka State Primary School Teachers' Association has submitted a petition to the government in this regard and has given a deadline of August 27 for the fulfilment of their demands, failing which it has been decided to boycott classes 6 to 8. Graduate primary teachers (GPT) are being recruited across the State from the academic year of 2016-17 to teach classes 6 to 8. Before 2016-17, the government had recruited over 1.4 lakh teachers to teach classes 1 to 7. Out of these, eligible graduate teachers were being promoted to the post of high school teachers. But, after the recruitment of GPTs, the Cadre and Recruitment Rules (C&R rules) were amended in 2016-2017 and all teachers who were recruited for classes 1 to 7 before 2017 were demoted and designated as primary school teachers (PST) for classes 1 to 5 only. The main reason for the teachers' protest is that over 40,000 of these primary school teachers have graduated, but they have not been promoted as GPT since 2016-17. Speaking to The Hindu, Chandrashekara Nugli, president of the Karnataka State Primary School Teachers' Association, said: 'A meeting was held with the Chief Minister on September 4, 2024 to discuss the problems of primary school teachers and fulfilment of their demands. The Chief Minister had promised to take a decision within a month after holding comprehensive consultations with the Minister for School Education and officials. However, even after a year, our demand has not been fulfilled.' 'The struggle has started at all taluk and district levels since August 12 to demand the fulfilment of our demands. If the demands are not met by August 27, classes will be boycotted and an indefinite strike will be held at Freedom Park in Bengaluru from September 3. The struggle will continue until the demands are met by celebrating Teachers' Day at the protest site,' he added . Meanwhile, a meeting was held, headed by Basavaraj Horatti, chairman of Legislative Council with Madhu Bangarappa, Minister of School Education, and MLCs belonging to teachers and graduates constituencies on Wednesday. The MLCs urged the Minister to promote PST teachers with degrees as GPT teachers. Mr. Bangarappa said that action has already been taken on this issue and the opinion of the Law and the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) is being sought. 'The Chief Minister also expressed his agreement on this. The promotion of PSTs will be discussed with the Chief Minister soon and an appropriate decision will be taken,' he added.

‘Hike in U.S tariffs a blessing in disguise for India's renewable energy sector'
The hike in tariffs was a 'blessing in disguise' for India's renewable energy sector, as it may help restrict exports, trigger scale of growth in local markets, bring down the cost of production and in turn make the industry globally competitive, said Pinaki Bhattacharyya, co-chair, FICCI Renewable Energy CEOs Committee. 'The recent tariff increase by the U.S government is a blessing in disguise for the RE sector. The Indian government has introduced many schemes and incentives to encourage production of cells, modules and also wind turbines for the local market. But many manufactures are now exporting them and this is not in the interest of the country,' Mr. Bhattacharyya remarked, while speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of a seminar on Renewable Energy Transition for Commercial and Industrial Consumers in the Southern Region, held in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The U.S. tariffs will discourage those exports and encourage Indian manufactures of cells, modules and wind turbines etc. to focus on local markets and bring in scale, maturity and ability to compete globally, he anticipated. He said, under the new U.S. tariff regime, the landing cost of these products would be much higher in the U.S, making exports unviable for Indian manufacturers. At the same time, he said, power generators in India were not getting cells and modules from other markets and they were not allowed to import these from China because of certain reactions. 'The government should take a balanced view to stabilise the market environment and growth. It should also introduce some restrictions on exports, not just on imports,'' commented Mr. Bhattacharyya, also the founder, CEO, and managing director, AMPIN Energy Transition, a renewable energy transition company. Since 2023, the Asia Development Bank has set aside $100 billion towards investments in the renewable energy sector in the Asia Pacific region, according to an official of the bank. In 2024 alone, the region captured $8 billion from ADB and interestingly, India alone had a share of up to $5 billion, indicating a boom in India's RE sector.
