'Duke Nukem' Adaptation Set By 'Devil May Cry' & ‘Castlevania' Showrunner Adi Shanker

Geek Culture23-06-2025
Legendary gaming icon Duke Nukem is back, just not in a way most are expecting, as Adi Shankar, showrunner of Netflix's Devil May Cry and Castlevania animated series, has acquired the screen rights to the classic shooter franchise for his next game-to-screen adaptation.
Speaking to Esqurie, Shankar spoke on his future plans, which, apart from season two of Devil May Cry , included a Duke Nukem show. 'I'm being approached with different IPs and companies that want to work with me,' he explained, 'I bought the rights to Duke Nukem. Not the gaming rights, but I bought it from Gearbox.' Duke Nukem 3D (1996)
Even though the project is still in its infancy, Shankar already has plans for his take on the iconic '90s video game franchise. 'It's a middle finger to everybody,' he described when asked about his vision for the show, 'When Duke Nukem blew up, a bunch of people sat around trying to turn it into a brand, when it's just a middle finger. Duke Nukem can't be made by a corporation, because the moment a corporation makes Duke Nukem , it's no longer Duke Nukem . I don't intend on having anyone tell me what to do on this one.'
From his comments alone, it seems like his adaptation will be as unapologetic and no-holds-barred as its gaming source material, which was made famous by its tongue-in-cheek nature, violence and self-aware immaturity. Duke Nukem Forever (2011)
Duke Nukem entered the video game scene in 1991 as a series of 2D platformers created by Apogee Software Ltd. (now 3D Realms). The franchise would rise to fame in 1996 with Duke Nukem 3D , which transformed it into the FPS icon many know today. The series would go on to receive numerous sequels and spin-offs over 15 years, culminating in 2011's infamous Duke Nukem Forever , which was heavily criticised by critics and fans alike, effectively killing the series… until now, that is.
Still, it's unclear what form the project will eventually take, be it an animated series like his previous works, a live-action TV show, or a movie. It's also unknown how his acquisition of the franchise's screen rights will affect Legendary Entertainment's Duke Nukem movie by Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg.

Antony Starr Will Miss Monstrous Homelander As 'The Boys' Wraps Final Season Production

Antony Starr has bid an emotional farewell to his The Boys character Homelander as production on the Amazon superhero satire's fifth and final season came to a close. The actor described his experience with the show as 'the highlight of my career.' In a heartfelt Instagram post accompanied by behind-the-scenes photos, Starr ( Outrageous Fortune ) explained that he had 'been waiting a little to let things settle and process the end of this show' before sharing his thoughts. Photo credits: Michael Kovac for Getty Images 'Difficult (for me) to put into words what an incredible ride this has been. How much life and growth has occurred. How amazing the team is. It's truly been the highlight of my career,' he wrote. 'When we began, I had no idea what was coming. This juggernaut left the station and never stopped. Except for that Covid moment. Oh and the strikes. That was a thing too. But apart from those two times, it never stopped, boldly making its mark on the television landscape. There's nothing else like it. It lives in its own lane.' Starr also thanked showrunner Eric Kripke ( Supernatural ), referring to him as his 'co-parent with this twisted gem of a character.' He continued, 'We created a monster, sir. And I will miss him, and you. 'Til we roll out the last season. When I'll see you. But this creative chapter is closed, and I'll miss it, brother.' The actor reserved special praise for fans, writing: 'Massive thank you to the fans. You are the lifeblood. Without you, we don't get to do this. And our fans are second to none. Mad love to you….and deepest respect for your taste.' Antony Starr as Homelander in The Boys He concluded his post with a sign-off in Homelander's voice: 'Okidoke people. We cooked for the last time. Can't wait to show you what we made. TIL that day, Homelander, signing off.' The Boys first premiered in 2019, earning both commercial success and critical acclaim. The series has racked up eight Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Drama Series. While the show's final season is not expected to air until next year, fans don't have to wait long for more content from the universe — spinoff Gen V , which follows college-aged supes, is set to premiere its second season on 17 September, while Vought Rising , a prequel series led by Jensen Ackles' ( Supernatural ) Soldier Boy and Aya Cash's ( You're the Worst ) Stormfront, is also in development. Ryan Reynolds' Cryptic Post Read As Deadpool's Return In ‘Avengers: Doomsday'

Ryan Reynolds ( Free Guy, Red Notice ) may have hinted that Deadpool will be crashing the Avengers' next big-screen outing. On the morning of 12 August, the Deadpool star posted an image on Instagram of the Avengers logo, but with Deadpool-style graffiti spray-painted across it. The red paint, matching Deadpool's signature colour, appears to mimic both the 'A' for Avengers and the iconic 'A' anarchy symbol. Reynolds' wisecracking antihero was last seen in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine , which grossed $1.3 billion worldwide, but was not among the many stars confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday during Marvel's much-discussed big 'chair' cast reveal. Robert Downey Jr. during Marvel'schair reveal. Still, given Deadpool & Wolverine's massive success, and the Merc with a Mouth's knack for multiverse chaos, fans have long speculated that Deadpool might resurface soon — either in Avengers: Doomsday or in the follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars . The timing of Reynolds' post has many convinced it's the former. For now, Marvel is understood to be filming Doomsday , with the Instagram tease aligning perfectly with production. Some fans are even expecting a second round of cast announcements, or perhaps another 'chair' reveal, as shooting continues. Filming for Avengers: Doomsday has been underway for months, with leaked on-set images showing Sam Wilson's (Anthony Mackie, Twisted Metal ) Avengers, The Thunderbolts/New Avengers, and The Fantastic Four appearing together. Legacy X-Men actors have also been spotted filming, though several MCU characters remain unconfirmed. Patrick Stewart's Professor X and Ian McKellen's Magneto That leaves the door wide open for more additions, and Deadpool, alongside Hugh Jackman's ( The Greatest Showman ) Wolverine, ranks high on fan wish lists. With Doomsday confirmed to feature a trip back to the original Fox X-Men universe, where Patrick Stewart's ( Star Trek: Picard ) Professor X, James Marsden's ( Sonic the Hedgehog films) Cyclops, and Ian McKellen's ( The Lord of the Rings trilogy) Magneto are returning, the stage seems set for a reunion of old favourites. Could Reynolds' Instagram post be more than just a playful nod? Fans are hoping so — and if history has taught us anything about Deadpool, it's that he loves to crash the party. 'Wednesday' Creators Alfred Gough & Miles Millar Plan 'Addams Family' Animated Reboot Film

In an episode of Deadline's Crew Call podcast, Wednesday creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar disclosed their current work on a new animated Addams Family movie for Amazon MGM Studios. The Addams Family (2019) The movie will be a complete reboot of the animated film franchise, having no links to the original films, as well as Netflix's Wednesday, which stars Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Jenna Ortega as the deadpan, sarcastic, and macabre titular character. Gough has told Crew Call that the creator duo would be working on the new animated film with Amazon MGM, as well as Kevin Miserocchi, the director of the Tee & Charles Addams Foundation, who personally knew Charles Addams, the creator of the Addams Family. Other collaborators on the project include producers Gail Berman ( Elvis ) and John Glickman ( Rush Hour ). Gough and Millar shared about the first time they collaborated and how they have maintained that level of teamwork from their time at the USC Peter Stark Producing Program, working on their orangutan and cop buddy movie, Mango , all the way to their half-billion-grossing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024). The pair also went on to talk about Season 2 of Wednesday , disclosing how they managed to successfully pull off the new season despite the writers' and actors' strikes, their inspiration, the enduring pull of the Addams Family franchise, and the best way to accurately depict what's in Wednesday's mind as she offhandedly tosses her usual sardonic one-liners. As Gough explains, 'The key with her is not writing a joke, it's writing to her worldview. That's where it lands, and that's where it sounds fun. Anytime you reach for a joke with this character, you wind up cutting that line.' In addition, because Wednesday isn't exactly a typical detective, her motivations are usually different. In the words of Gough, Wednesday commits to solving crimes because 'someone has gaslighted her, or because she feels a truth isn't being told, she also sticks up for the underdog.' Unlike other characters who become more fleshed out as their show progresses, Gaugh said that the approach to Wednesday is to instead think of her as a character that is already 'fully formed and she [just] has to learn that the world works in shades of grey.'
