Britain's Got Talent star 'gripped victims throats' as he raped two women, court hears

Daily Mirror24-04-2025

A former Britain's Got Talent star allegedly raped two women just months apart. A court has heard how Andrew Johnston, 30, was studying at the Royal Academy of Music when the incidents took place. The former choirboy was 13 when he finished on Britain's Got Talent in second place.
He subsequently went on to land a £1million recording contract with Syco Music – owned by Simon Cowell. The court heard how Johnston allegedly gripped his victims by their throat during sex – and refused to wear a condom. Johnston denies two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
The former singer who was studying for a two year diploma in opera at the prestigious music college wore a black suit as he listened to Maryam Syed, prosecuting. Syed told the court: "Mr Johnston competed as a singer in the television programme Britain's Got Talent, and he did quite well in that programme.
"At the time of the allegations Mr Johnston was a student at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in London. Mr Johnston was competing a two year diploma in opera." Describing the first alleged account, the prosecutor said: "The defendant removed the condom he had been wearing and the complainant noticed the change in sensation.
"She repeatedly told Mr Johnston to stop having sex with her but he made no attempt to withdraw his penis. The complainant then described to police that Mr Johnston then, she says, placed one hand on her neck and the other was pinning her down.
"She repeatedly told Mr Johnston on multiple occasions to stop, she managed to free her hands and slam them onto her chest. She told police that she began panicking and he, Mr Johnston, was not listening to her." The prosecutor added: "She then goes on to describe, as you will see that the defendant Mr Johnston became more forceful, slamming the headboard into the wall."
Syed told the court that the complainant "explained to Johnston from the outset" that she didn't like certain things during sex because of bad experiences. "She specifically said things like hands around the throat."
Johnston allegedly "groped" a woman's bum at a bar in central London just three months later, the court heard. Syed added: "Whilst he was there he had groped her bottom, which we say is sexual touching, dragged her by the arm and had refused to leave.
"In order to help her move him she had walked him out of the bar onto the street. At that point, he continued touching her, he verbally abused her, he grabbed her shoulders and her forcibly kissed her on the lips." Syed later told the court that the singer had raped the second complainant after taking her to a "sex club" in London.
"She explained that she had asked the defendant to wear a condom which she had provided and she said the vaginal intercourse took place immediately with almost no foreplay," Syed told the court. She added: "She described how she started to feel the defendant's hands around her neck, and no matter how many times she removed them, she said the defendant Mr Johnston kept on putting his hands back around her throat.
"She made, she told police, multiple attempts to remove his hands but he did not remove them. He then stopped and removed the condom." Johnston is said to have continued having unprotected sex with the women. He denies the charges.
The trial continues.

Amanda Holden 'goes naked' on radio after BGT dress Ofcom complaints

Amanda Holden took to the airwaves on Thursday morning alongside pal Jamie Theakston and appeared to be naked for their breakfast morning show on Heart FM Amanda Holden seemingly shunned any Ofcom complaints by appearing to be naked on air. The Britain's Got Talent judge's outfit on the ITV talent show's finale was criticised by some viewers, but she was clearly unfazed. She appears to have ignored any negative views - and looked to be completely nude on Heart FM's Breakfast Show's live stream. Her appearance even made her co-host Jamie Theakston do a double take. ‌ As she sat in her DJ chair on Thursday morning, she said on air: "Good morning, Mr Theakston. It is 6.30am and I've just caught myself on the camera and don't you think I look naked this morning? Sat behind here?" ‌ Jamie seemed to stumble in his response, replying: "Do you know what... You are wearing clothes, aren't you?" His comments amused his pal and co-host. She laughed as she said back: "I just looked and went, 'What? Have I forgotten to put my clothes on?'" The camera angle made it look like the 54-year-old had no clothes on, with only a chunky pearl necklace visible. She was, however, also wearing a pale pink strapless dress and was photographed outside of the London studios. As well as Amanda's BGT finale dress complaints following Saturday's show, fellow judge Alesha Dixon's attire was also criticised. The duo, alongside Simon Cowell and Bruno Tonioli, watched on as the public voted for magician Harry Moulding as their winner. In total, the female judges' outfits received 72 complaints to Ofcom. When contacted by the Mirror, Ofcom said they had received the complaints from viewers, who alleged the star's frocks were "too revealing for a family show". ‌ Amanda had stunned in her final outfit for the ITV talent competition after vowing to never tone down her fashion choices. It came after she had received a number of criticisms since the series started. She made sure to pull out all the stops for the star-studded finale, opting for a braless, plunging custom-made white silk gown from Saint Hendrix. She wore her hair slicked back into a bun with several bejewelled clips. ‌ Alesha meanwhile, turned heads in a sequin-strewn see-through jump suit, which revealed her underwear. It's far from the first time the pair's looks have been complained about on the show. In July 2017, Amanda wore a plunging see-through Julien Macdonald dress. It went on to be the most complained about TV moment of the year. The mum-of-two joked the incident was a 'national crisis' at the time. She teased in Closer magazine: "I'm always asked about the Ofcom complaints, but every outfit on the show is checked before I leave my dressing room, so I'm never worried. I think people should have fun with fashion!" She went on: "I had bits of fish wire underneath my breasts trying to hold that together... It's all quite laughable, but all everyone seems to talk about. It's been called another national crisis – but, oh no, I will not be covered up."

Simon Cowell leaves fans truly baffled after major transformation

Simon Cowell has long been open about his use of cosmetic procedures, but the 65-year-old's latest appearance has left Britain's Got Talent viewers stunned Simon Cowell found himself in the spotlight after his new look in a Britain's Got Talent teaser triggered quite the stir. The 65 year old music mogul flashed a smile in a pre-recorded snippet for Saturday night's live final, which aired on May 31, declaring: "We're live from Hammersmith, it's minutes before the final, I am really excited. "I haven't got a clue who is going to win, but that's a good thing. Thanks for watching, everyone." Yet, it wasn't the anticipated finale causing a buzz amongst viewers, it was Cowell's vastly transformed visage. Social media erupted with fans suggesting he resembled "an AI version of Simon Cowell," while others confessed to struggling to recognise him. ‌ Before opinions could skyrocket, ITV took decisive action by disabling comments on the video, halting any further public discourse. Cowell, once an X Factor panellist and among the first male celebs to openly discuss using cosmetic injectables, has consistently refuted claims of surgical enhancement. ‌ Addressing last year's flurry of plastic surgery gossip with a chuckle, he retorted: "I think it's hysterical. I mean it just makes me laugh - I haven't had a facelift or anything. I have had a bit of Botox but kind of nothing drastic. So when I hear about this stuff honestly it does make me laugh", reports the Express. Back in 2018, music mogul Simon Cowell splashed out a cool £2,000 on a flashy cosmetic procedure known as the "21st-century facelift"—a Silhouette Soft Lift that works by threading bioplastic-infused fibres beneath the skin to perk up and firm saggy bits. At that time, Cowell dished to the Daily Mail: "For me now, it's all about having clean skin. If you have clean skin, you look better. But you have to be very careful with some of this stuff." Admitting he may have previously taken it too far with the nips and tucks, Cowell reflected: "There was a stage where I might have gone a bit too far. I saw a picture of me from 'before' the other day and didn't recognise it as me." ‌ Nowadays, the telly stalwart credits his fresh facade to a more wholesome lifestyle. Simon credited his rejuvenated looks to hydration and clean living. Speaking to the Daily Mail, he said: "There was a phase where everyone was having their faces pumped full of this and the other. But actually, for me now, a lot of it comes down to healthy eating and drinking tons of water." Over the years, Cowell's visage has definitely taken on new shapes. Back in the '80s, well before he became synonymous with TV talent shows, Cowell was a behind-the-scenes music bod sporting a fuller face, untouched barnet, and au naturel gnashers. As the noughties dawned with Cowell rising to fame through the likes of Pop Idol and American Idol, he maintained his signature black tee and denim combo, though the tell-tale signs of advancing years were undeniably etched on his visage. It wasn't until the 2010s that his transformation started to attract attention. His cheeks appeared plumper, jawline more defined, and forehead smoother, sparking years of speculation about precisely what procedures he had undergone.
