Teacher stunned by €197 bill for collecting his elderly mother-in-law from the airport
Rob Andrews was slapped with the hefty bill from Belfast City Airport. Teacher Rob was at the airport on December 20 last year to pick up his elderly mother-in-law who was travelling from England to spend Christmas with him and his wife. Happy to pay the £3 fee for collecting flyers, he was stunned to receive an unexpected Christmas card demanding he cough up £100. The demand – issued by Sheffield-based private company Vehicle Control Services – accused Rob of stopping in a prohibited zone. His crime was to pause for a matter of seconds as he read signage to make sure he was going to the right place. He's the latest victim of a controversial ticketing policy that has seen dozens of motorists hit with hefty fines. It was the start of a seven-month battle during which he challenged the fine, only to lose a series of appeals without adequate explanation of the grounds for refusal. Rob Andrews. Today's News in 90 Seconds - August 19th In increasingly aggressive communications, he was threatened with court and his case was handed to a debt recovery agency based in Cheshire. They gave him a 14-day ultimatum to settle the fine, which by now had climbed to £170. It was only last week when Rob said he was prepared to fight his corner in court and that he was going to the press did the debt agency suddenly drop his case. 'By their own admission I was only there for 17 seconds, that's how long it took me to read the signage to make sure I wasn't going to the wrong car park,' he said. 'I was not blocking anyone, as the pictures they sent me show, there are no other cars either in front or behind me. As soon as I worked out where I was supposed to be going I went through the barrier. 'It's a nonsense, you have to stop anyway to wait for the barrier to open.' He said he decided to fight the fine as a matter of principle. 'I'm lucky I could afford to pay it and make it go away, but £100 is a lot of money and then it quickly rose to £170 – that's a lot for someone to part with for what is clearly something that is wrong. 'I could have just paid it – my wife kept telling me just get rid of it – but it made me so angry, especially for those who would struggle to have that sort of money, nearly £200, spare. That's a big hole in your weekly budget.' He said he exchanged numerous emails with VCS and subsequently the Independent Appeals Service who rejected his challenge, saying their decision had been taken on the basis of the law. Read more Last month the Sunday World revealed VCS is imposing fines in Northern Ireland according to law that applies to England and Wales and not here. It followed a similar case in which car owner June Bowers (81) was hit with a £40 fine when her car was snapped pausing at the same barrier as the driver read the signage. The fine spiralled to £170 as her husband Joe, a veteran trade unionist, challenged it. After a five-month battle VCS dropped the case when it was clear the Bowers were not for standing down. 'It just makes me angry that these companies can harass and bully people,' said Rob this week. 'The City Airport has a lot to answer for, are they happy that their customers are being chased and harassed like this? 'I feel for elderly or vulnerable people who face these demands, it's very intimidating, unnecessarily so, and if you do appeal it, it becomes even more bullying.' He admitted he felt he had exhausted by the process and was ready to admit defeat and pay the fine when he read the Bowers' story in the Sunday World . 'I got in touch with Joe and he told me not to back down,' he said. Belfast City Airport said: 'At Belfast City Airport, the safety of our site users is of the utmost importance. For that reason, 'no stop' zones are in place across our site. These zones are clearly signposted and motorists that do stop are subject to a Charge Notice from Vehicle Control Services. 'We do however recognise that unforeseen circumstances may arise and so we continue to work closely with Vehicle Control Services to review each individual case to ensure that a genuine violation of our health and safety measures and a breach of the Terms and Conditions has taken place.'

Daughter of woman who died at euthanasia clinic says ‘nothing they do is going to satisfy me'
'I don't want policies or promises, I want to make sure this never happens to another person again' The daughter of a woman who died at a Swiss euthanasia clinic has said she wants to make sure that what happened to her mother 'never happens to another person again'. Megan Slough Royal only learned about her mother Maureen's death through a message on WhatsApp earlier this summer. None of the family of the Cavan-based woman were with the 58-year-old as she slipped away at a clinic in Switzerland. Ms Slough Royal says she was later informed by the clinic that her mother had told them she was aware of her decision. The clinic has told her they will video call relatives before they carry out the procedure, but Ms Slough Royal told Lunchtime Live: 'Nothing they do is going to satisfy me. 'I don't want policies or promises, I want to make sure this never happens to another person again.' Ms Slough Royal highlighted the fact that relatives who are informed that their loved ones are about to undergo assisted suicide could be accidently breaking the law. 'The first thing they said was they're going to start video calling people,' she said. 'This new video call thing is totally haphazard; assisted suicide is illegal in so many countries. 'You might be breaking the law of your home country by agreeing. Ms Slough travelled to the Pegasos clinic in Switzerland less than a month ago, on July 8, having told her family she was going to Lithuania with a friend. Her family became suspicious and contacted her. They say she promised to return. But Ms Royal and Ms Slough's partner, Mick Lynch, would later receive a message from a volunteer for the Pegasos group to inform them of her death. Maureen Slough The family immediately set about trying to find out why they were not informed by the clinic in advance, and also questioned if Ms Slough's history of mental illness was assessed by the clinic first. The Pegasos group has said in response to questions from family and friends of Ms Slough, that it received a letter from Ms Slough's daughter Megan saying she was aware of her mother's wishes and accepted them. It also says it verified the letter through an email response to Ms Royal using an email address supplied by Ms Slough. Ms Royal has said she never wrote such a letter or verified any contact from Pegasos, and now her family think Ms Slough may have forged the 'letter' and verified it using an email address she created herself. Pegasos was asked further questions by the Irish Independent as to why it did not ring Ms Royal, and whether it sought a mental health history for Ms Slough before her death. The Pegasos group responded that Ms Slough went through an extensive assessment process leading up to her death, including an independent psychiatric evaluation confirming she was of sound mind. Her brother Philip, a UK solicitor, has now written to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in the UK, asking it to investigate the matter with Swiss authorities. The grieving daughter said her mother had tried to take her own life last year following the deaths of two of her sisters, and was not in her right mind when she made her decision to go to Switzerland. Her latest granddaughter had been born just days earlier. 'They should not have allowed her to make that decision on her own. This group did not contact me, even though my mother had nominated me as next of kin. They waited until afterwards and then told me she had died listening to an Elvis Presley song,' Ms Royal said.
