Now that the NBA All-Star Game, with its revised mini-tournament format, is more than a month in the past, commissioner Adam Silver has had a chance to reflect on the experience.
The overall takeaway: the product was 'a miss.'
Speaking Thursday at the conclusion of the NBA's Board of Governor's meetings, Silver fielded several questions about the state of the league, television ratings, expansion and recent sales of franchises. And the All-Star Game, which has drawn criticism recently for a lack of competitive and compelling play, remains an issue.
'I thought we made almost an immeasurable amount of progress — sitting there, I thought this was a little better — but it was a miss,' Silver told reporters Thursday. 'We're not there in terms of creating an All-Star experience that we can be proud of and that our players can be proud of.'
Silver continued by acknowledging the switch in broadcast partner for next year's All-Star Game, with NBC taking the reins from TNT, which had aired the event for 23 consecutive years. The 2026 All-Star Game, though, will be unique in that NBC will be airing the event while also juggling its coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina.
Despite the busy schedule, Silver said NBC is 'very enthusiastic about the All-Star Game as a marquee property.'
Next year's All-Star Game will be hosted by the Los Angeles Clippers at the newly opened Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California. Silver said that the NBA, based on feedback to this most recent version of the event, is starting fresh in considering ways to improve the All-Star Game experience.
Silver did say that, with the environment of the Olympics and the NHL's success with its 4 Nations Face-Off tournament held in February, the NBA could consider introducing some form of international competition to the All-Star weekend.
'People floated USA (versus) World, I'm not sure that makes sense with the level of development, if that's fair to lump all the other countries together these days,' Silver said. 'Maybe we can single out if there are some international teams that can compete.'
The NBA introduced a new format with a mini-tournament with four teams competing in three games. The NBA divided the 24 selected All-Stars into three teams of eight players. TNT analysts Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith each drafted their teams. The fourth team was the winning squad from the Rising Stars event Friday night.
'I think at the height of this, we sell competition,' Silver said. 'I think our players recognize they're not putting their best foot forward when there's a sense that they're not all-in playing an All-Star Game. And I take responsibility, too, because we're both a sport and an entertainment brand and we recalibrated for this year's All-Star Game in San Francisco around more of an entertainment product and don't think it worked.'
Silver added that the recalibration was 'well-intentioned' but that 'the breaks were too long' and that the NBA is 'a bit back to the drawing board.'

The seven-time All-Star was asked about his offseason plans after losing Game 7 to the Thunder, and he hilariously stated he was going to drink a lot of beer in the coming days. Jokic appears to have now headed back to Serbia, and a clip of his has gone viral on social media. The 30-year-old is playing a sport in it, but it appears to be kick volleyball, not basketball. Fans had some interesting reactions to Jokic's offseason activity. Advertisement "How can anyone not like this guy?" one fan asked. "How does he have feel for the game ever here?" another fan wondered. "Just your 3x MVP and NBA Champ out there chillin', playing with neighborhood kids at the local public pool," said one fan. "These guys would have helped him more than Jamal (Murray) did," stated a fan. "That's the greatest basketball mind of all time," a fan said. "He gives zero (expletive) what others think! Proud to be a Serb," claimed one fan. Jokic is going to have plenty of time on his hands to do whatever he wants. The one thing that is certain, though, is that when the 2025-26 season starts, he's going to be dominating on the basketball court once again. Hall of Famer Don Nelson wins 2025 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award from coaches association
Hall of Fame coach Don Nelson picked up another accolade on Sunday, being honored with the 2025 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award, handed out by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA). Nelson, who retired from coaching in 2010 (after coaching Stephen Curry in his rookie season), is the only coach to have at least 250 wins with three different franchises. Nelson is second all time in wins as a coach (1,335) and games coached (2,398). 'History has already reflected Don Nelson's staggering contributions as a cutting-edge innovator and visionary of the NBA game,' said Indiana Pacers Head Coach and NBCA President Rick Carlisle. 'Back in the '80s and '90s, he made teams adjust to historic pace, liberal 3-point shooting, inverted offense, and disruptive defensive schemes. All this while establishing himself as one of the most compelling personalities in all of professional sports. I'm certain that Chuck Daly would agree that our beloved 'Nellie' is most deserving of this prestigious recognition.' 'I'm extremely grateful and humbled to receive this incredible honor and join the exclusive list of coaches who have preceded me,' said Nelson. 'Chuck Daly was a dear friend of mine and someone I respected immensely due to his class, character, and of course, his coaching ability. He may not have influenced my wardrobe, but Chuck certainly had a lasting impact on my coaching philosophy, style, and most importantly, how I managed the personalities on a roster... At the behest of their father, Troy, then 9-year-old twins Amen and Ausar Thompson were already manifesting greatness on a family vision board titled 'Amen and Ausar's 6'9' Dreams'. The first twins in NBA history to get drafted top 5, and to whom Lebron James describes as 'They different. They ain't like the rest of us. I've been able to go against some dudes in my career, and those two guys, man, they're just pure athleticism', tacked two major accomplishments onto that vision board recently. Amen (drafted No. 4 by Houston in 2023 and Ausar, taken No. 5 by Detroit) were bestowed honorary high school degrees by Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest School at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. 'It means a lot,' said Amen, minutes before receiving the honorary degree with his brother. 'This is where I grew up -- from 8th grade to 11th grade. I had to look for new opportunities in the 12th grade, but I always felt like a Pine Crest Panther. For them ... to present me with an honorary degree means a lot.' After winning a state title with the Panthers in 2021 and becoming Miami Herald Co-Players of the Year for classes 4A-2A as juniors, the 6-8 wings left high school for Atlanta-based Overtime Elite, a developmental professional basketball league, before entering the 2023 draft. The ceremony at FAU followed earlier news that day that Amen was selected to the All-NBA defensive first team. Amen's defensive tenacity, length and athleticism helped the Rockets rank fifth in defensive efficiency and finish with the fourth best record in the league (52-30). 'I have always taken pride in my defense since the Pine Crest days, even before that,' Amen said.'That was one of my goals going into this year was to make first team All-NBA on defense. So just being one of the youngest players to do that in my second year that is one of the goals I established for myself.' Ausar appears to be on a similar defensive trajectory as Amen and helped the Pistons enjoy a historic 30-game turnaround from last season and break a streak of 15 consecutive playoff losses. State baseball honors The Florida Diary Farmers announced the state's classification winners for FHSAA baseball, following balloting by a statewide panel of high school baseball coaches and prep media representatives. Each is eligible for Mr. Baseball honors, representing the best of the best. Coach of the Year recipients were also announced. They are eligible for the state's overall Baseball Coach of the Year accolades. Here are locals who won classification honors. ▪ 7A: Gio Rojas, Junior, Pitcher, Stoneman Douglas, Class 7A Player of the Year Led his squad to the state title with a 12-0 record. Posted an 0.72 ERA in 68 innings pitched with 119 strikeouts and 16 walks. Had a .388 batting average with 24 runs and 32 RBI. Committed to the University of Miami. 7A: Todd Fitz-Gerald, Stoneman Douglas, Class 7A Coach of the Year Led his squad to a 31-2 record and a fifth consecutive Class 7A state title. ▪ 6A: Zack Malvasio, Senior, Outfield, St. Thomas Aquinas, Class 6A Player of the Year Helped his team to the Class 6A title by hitting .414 with 16 doubles, 16 home runs, 45 runs and 48 RBI.
