Duke freshman big man Khaman Maluach is headed to the NBA draft

NBC Sports27-04-2025

Duke freshman big man Khaman Maluach is jumping to the NBA.
The program announced Sunday in a social media post that the 7-foot-2, 250-pound Maluach would go the one-and-done route after helping the Blue Devils reach the Final Four. Maluach's move was first reported late Saturday by The News & Observer of Raleigh, and underclassmen had until 11:59 p.m. that night to meet the NBA deadline to declare themselves as eligible for the June draft.
'His best years are by far in front of him,' Duke coach Jon Scheyer said in a social media video from the program. 'I can't wait to see what he's going to do because he's just scratching the surface. He has an amazing base for who he is as a player, but that skillset is just going to continue to grow.'
Notably, Maluach is an elite rim-runner who used his length to finish off lobs for easy scores or to block shots at the center of a defense that ranked among the nation's best in KenPom's efficiency metrics, including with his ability to defend on the perimeter with Duke's switching defense.
Maluach averaged 8.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks while shooting 71.2% from the field, though he also was reliable at the line (76.6%) and made four 3-pointers to show the potential for expanded range. He still is developing his skill set, but his 7-5 wingspan and 9-8 standing reach offers attractive numbers for potential NBA suitors.
Maluach is from South Sudan and played for his country in the 2024 Paris Olympics. He joined NBA Academy Africa in 2021, participated in the Nike Hoop Summit in April 2024 and was a top-5 national recruit for 247Sports.
Maluach had six points and zero rebounds in Duke's season-ending loss to Houston in the national semifinals on April 5. That same day, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States was revoking all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders, creating uncertainty about his immigration situation, though there has been no updates or change to that announcement.
Duke spokesman Frank Tramble issued a statement that night saying the school was aware of the announcement and was looking into the situation to understand 'any implications for Duke students.'
Maluach is the fourth Duke player to make an early jump to the NBA draft, starting with freshman wing Kon Knueppel and junior guard Tyrese Proctor. Last week, freshman star Cooper Flagg — named The Associated Press national player of the year in early April — joined the list as the favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick.
The Blue Devils will lose all five starters, with graduate transfer Sion James departing as well, though Scheyer's program has 247Sports' No. 3-ranked recruiting class led by twins Cameron and Cayden Boozer.

Celtics' Unexpected Kristaps Porzingis Plan Amid Trade Rumors

Celtics' Unexpected Kristaps Porzingis Plan Amid Trade Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Celtics could undergo a significant roster overhaul this offseason. Being over the NBA's second tax apron, several of their players on the current roster will likely not be available for the 2025-26 season. Among them is Kristaps Porzingis. Advertisement Because Porzingis is owed $30.7 million for this upcoming season, trading him could help them accomplish their primary offseason goal. Despite his issues with staying on the floor, he may interest trade partners because his contract will expire in 2026. In the last two years, Boston has seen how good they are when Porzingis is on the floor, but he has shown his availability can fluctuate. That makes him an easy trade candidate. Boston Celtics star Kristaps Porzingis© Eric Canha-Imagn Images However, that could also play into why the Celtics may want to keep him. On The Kevin O'Connor Show, Chris Mannix revealed that while Porzingis is on the block, he believes the Celtics would actually prefer things go a different way with him. Advertisement "Porzingis, I think, is available, but I think they would like to get Porzingis back long-term at a lower price point on his next deal," Mannix said. Given much of the reporting in recent weeks about Porzingis' availability on the trade market, Boston eyeing a potential new deal comes as a bit of a surprise. That said, health issues could help the Celtics keep him on the team at a much steeper discount than what he's been paid for the last two seasons in Boston. If the plan is to keep him around, that could have implications for the future of Jrue Holiday, Sam Hauser, and maybe even Payton Pritchard in Boston. If the plan is to keep Porzingis, they'll likely have to trade at least two of those three players to get under the NBA's second tax apron. Chenango Forks Boy's Lacrosse heading to State Championship; tops 3-Time Reigning Class D Champs

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Chenango Forks Blue Devils made their first trip to the state semifinal since 2022, and prepared to face off with Cold Spring Harbor in Middletown. It was a back-and-forth game throughout. The Seahawks scored first, but Brody Polacek answered. The swings would go both ways, and the Blue Devils would then lead, and CSH answered. In the late stages of the game, it would be tied, 4-4, with all 4 goals for Chenango Forks coming off the stick of Polacek. That was until, with 4.1 seconds left, Donavin Perhach found an incoming Gabriel Pavlick who would fire it home for the 5-4 advantage, which would be all it took. 'I just kinda ran up the field, and I was open, I guess,' said Pavlick. In the net for the Blue Devils, All-American and Syracuse commit Lucas Bartlow made 18 saves in the game. 'I mean, it's amazing,' said Bartlow. 'We've worked hard all year, and, you know, honestly, we had confidence in this game to begin with, so we came out and took it.' Chenango Forks will now face off against Penn Yan from Section V in the final, off the back of an incredible semifinal. 'I couldn't be prouder of these boys. I mean, that was, that was a 48-minute-long absolute battle,' said Head Coach Dave Pavlick. 'We knew we were going to come down here. We knew it was going to be a battle. We stuck to the game plan.' The Class D State Championship will be at Hobart & William Smith Colleges on Saturday, June 14th at 12:30 PM. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Pacers take 2-1 lead in NBA Finals as Tyrese Haliburton nears triple-double against Thunder

The Indiana Pacers took full advantage of the homecourt, pulling away in the fourth quarter to defeat the Oklahoma City Thunder, 116-107, in Game 3. Indiana owns a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals series after stealing Game 1 thanks to Tyrese Haliburton's heroic last-second jumper to win it 111-110. And after a mediocre performance for the Pacers in Game 2, Haliburton turned it up from three-point territory to lead the way for Indiana. Haliburton finished the game with 22 points on 9-of-17 shooting, including four made threes. He was also one rebound away from a triple-double after tallying 11 assists. On the defensive end, Haliburton also had two steals and one block. But this series has proven to be one that requires bench depth to show out, and Pacers guard Benedict Mathurin was up for the challenge. Mathurin dropped 27 points, leading the Pacers in that category after going a highly efficient 9-of-12 from the field with 7-of-8 made free throws over 22 minutes of work. He also had four rebounds and one assist for his squad. Pascal Siakam was also in the 20-point club, going 8-of-14 from the field with 5-of-6 made free throws for 21 points with six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Meanwhile, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander didn't have his best day shooting by his usual standards, going 9-of-20 from the floor as Indiana continued to play solid defense on him throughout the game. He had 24 points with eight rebounds and four assists, while Jalen Williams led Oklahoma City in the points department with 26 on the night. Chet Holmgren notched himself a double-double, though he wishes he had more than 20 points after going 6-of-15 shooting. He had 10 rebounds with two assists as well. The Pacers were able to drop 40 points in the second quarter, but it was the Thunder leading after three quarters, 89-84. However, Oklahoma City's offense went cold in the fourth quarter as they were outscored 32-18, an unprecedented 12 minutes for this team compared to what they've been able to accomplish all season long. Both sides had similar stats as a team, but Indiana, once again, turned it up when it mattered most in the fourth quarter. Indiana hopes to create an even bigger divide in this series in Game 4 on Friday night in their building.
