Jeremiyah Love added to Maxwell Award watch list

USA Today20 hours ago
The Fighting Irish running back could get a major award this season.
Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love may be a long shot for the Heisman, and now he's on another awards' watch list.
He's on the watch list for the Maxwell Award.
The award is given out to the most outstanding college football player in the U.S., with sports writers, sports broadcasters, and head coaches making up the field of judges.
Boise State's Ashton Jeanty won the award in 2024.
It's no surprise Love would be on this list, since he helped lead the Irish to the national title game last season -- and had he been healthier, the team might have prevailed over Ohio State.
Maybe Love should be more of a Heisman favorite, after all.

ESPN's Bill Connelly forecasts Michigan 2025 rebound with Bryce Underwood leading offense

While many pundits don't expect that much from Michigan football in 2025, ESPN's resident advanced analytics guru, Bill Connelly, isn't among them. Though the Wolverines finished ranked No. 26 according to his SP+ rankings last year, he is optimistic that the maize and blue will rebound nicely in 2025. Connelly is a bit ahead of the curve this year, seeing Michigan eclipsing the originally set over-under of 8.5. In his writeup of teams that will rebound from tougher years in 2024, the Wolverines are among his five teams, noting that there are still questions about the offensive side of the ball, but with Bryce Underwood leading the charge, the attack should be much more complementary with an expected stellar defense. 2025 projection (as of May): 9.8 average wins, 10th (+21.5) From the Big Ten preview: "The Wolverines went unbeaten when scoring at least 24 points (national scoring average: 28.0), but they reached that mark in only six of 13 games thanks primarily to a black hole at the QB position. They ranked 91st in Total QBR and 131st -- last nationally among non-service academies -- in passing yards per game (129.1). ... Either five-star freshman Bryce Underwood or veteran transfer Mikey Keene (Fresno State) will begin the season at QB for Moore's second Michigan team, and it's probably fair to assume that Underwood will finish it there. His first spring was up-and-down, but going from the aforementioned black hole to the best high school prospect in the country is quite the leap." Seeing Michigan projected 10th overall was a bit concerning, as the offense still has loads of questions. But I'd be surprised if the Wolverines didn't have a top-10 defense, and the schedule features only one projected top-15 team, per SP+. And they won eight games and beat Ohio State and Alabama while getting almost nothing from the QB. Even if Underwood isn't ready to lead a CFP team yet, a return to 9-3 or so and occasional actual passing yardage don't seem like too much to ask. Of course, the projected top-15 team that Connelly lists is Ohio State, the final game of the regular season and the team that Michigan has beaten four-straight times. He does include Washington in his list of teams expected to rebound, so that may be a tougher-than-expected game -- especially as the Wolverines look to avenge last year's loss. One place we disagree is in the Big Ten preview section, where he says that Underwood was up-and-down. If you count solely the spring game, yes, he made some mistakes. But his 12-for-26 statline doesn't account for how accurate he was throughout much of that day. And most accounts suggest that Underwood had a stellar spring when it came to all of the 15 practices.

Michigan State football incoming freshman wide receiver turning heads at first day of camp

Incoming freshman Braylon Coller with a remarkable expectations for the young kid this season One year ago, it was a young freshman wide receiver by the name of Nick Marsh who stole the show at the opening day of training camp. Even after one day of practice, it was clear that the Spartans had found something special. On Tuesday, Michigan State football once again opened up camp, and once again, there was a freshman wide receiver who stood out. Braylon Collier, a former 3-star wide receiver out of Sandusky, Ohio, was making highlight plays for pretty much the entire media portion of the first day of camp. Collier already looks like a steal and someone who probably should've been ranked much higher and might be in line for a legitimate role this year as a freshman just based off what we saw today, it was that impressive. Former Colorado football walk-on turned fan favorite makes emotional career decision

Former walk-on running back Charlie Offerdahl is one of the many feel-good stories of Deion Sanders' tenure as Colorado's head coach. Offerdahl is one of the last players remaining from the previous regime, but perhaps surprisingly, is also a player with whom Sanders has a close relationship. On Tuesday morning, he made the emotional decision to retire from football due to serious concussion issues. The Colorado native was awarded a scholarship by Sanders last spring and played in 13 games for the Buffs last season, but his latest concussion was too much to overcome. In a speech to the entire Colorado football program, Offerdahl announced his decision. "Obviously, I haven't been here this summer," Offerdahl said in a video posted to Sanders' Instagram account. "If it's not obvious already, I won't be coming back this year. How serious this last concussion was and how many I've had leading up to it is pretty scary for me and my family, but I will be hanging it up." Offerdahl's freshman season was Colorado's 1-11 year in 2022, where he racked up 37 carries for 150 yards, which were the most for a walk-on in program history. He scored his only career touchdown last season against Utah. Offerdahl also announced that he is in the process of applying for dental school, and Sanders believes he can get his now former player some help on that front. "I love this man to life," Sanders said. "You guys know how I feel about the 'OBs,' the Original Buffs. If there's somebody out there that's in control of a dental school, I want to make sure we take care of him." After Sanders was not done making Offerdahl feel like family, he also announced the program would continue to honor Offerdahl's scholarship for the remainder of his time at Colorado. While the decision and announcement were an emotional moment for the entire Buffaloes' program, the loss will be felt on the field as well. Whether it was a missed opportunity in the transfer portal or not, Colorado did not bring in a true starting running back after the departure of Isaiah Augustave. Returning players like Micah Welch and Dallan Hayden look like the top two candidates, while incoming gadget-type players like Simeon Price and DeKalon Taylor are the depth options. Colorado opened fall camp Monday, and along with the quarterback battle, the running back room will be one to watch as practices ramp up. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram.
