Goalscorer Parkinson 'buzzing to be back' after Middlesbrough win
Sean Neave's penalty sent the young Magpies ahead before the half-time whistle at Heritage Park before Parkinson, introduced from the substitutes' bench at the restart, scored within the opening two minutes of the second half as United's second-string recorded back-to-back league victories following last week's 4-1 win against Stoke City.
Parkinson, who had netted 11 goals across all competitions for United's youngsters before the turn of the new year, expressed his delight in returning to action after sustaining a foot injury on New Years' Day and is keen to kick on for the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign.
The 20-year-old forward, who made his Premier League debut for his boyhood club away at AFC Bournemouth in November 2023, told newcastleunited.com: "It's a big night for the team. I think we needed a win after a tough period since January. We're trying to stay in the top 16 so it's a big three points and, on a personal note, I'm buzzing to be back and scoring.
"I was told before coming on to be myself, playing like I was before Christmas when I was scoring goals and playing with confidence. I think I've also took a lot of confidence from my rehab and although it came at an unfortunate time, it was possibly the right thing for me and I was trying to take the positives from that.
"It couldn't have come at a worse time. I did it on New Years' Day and the January transfer window was something I was looking forward to, trying to get out and play senior football but that didn't happen.
"I want to give thanks to the medical team, Carl (Nelson) and Andy (Campbell) who got me back to full fitness and I'm now looking forward to the rest of the season."
The young Magpies are in Northumberland Senior Cup semi-final action on Tuesday night, facing an away tie against Heaton Stannington as they bid to defend the trophy they lifted last term, beating Blyth Town 2-1 in the final at St. James' Park.
Parkinson, who joined United's youth set-up at the age of seven, is keen for the team to end the season in positive fashion and believes the squad are regaining their form displayed in the first half of the season, which saw Newcastle's youngsters win six of their opening ten league matches.
The Durham-born youngster added: "There's still a few games left and I want to try and score as many goals and play as well as I can. As a team, we've got to look towards the Senior Cup. It's a competition that Newcastle sides should and look to win every year.
"In the league, we're still fighting for the top 16 and that's somewhere we want to be, put the Academy in a good place play in the Premier League International Cup next season.
"I think the team is getting back to where it was before Christmas. Everyone is running for each other and that team ethic and togetherness is there so we're really looking to push on and finish as high as we can in the table."

The Bears' T20 Blast campaign for 2025 creaked into life on Friday night as they secured a well earned six-wicket victory over Yorkshire Vikings at Edgbaston. Captain Alex Davies' knock of 65, as part of a century partnership with opener Tom Latham, ensured the Bears would ease to their target of 165 after wickets for Jake Lintott, Moeen Ali and Danny Briggs in the first innings. Advertisement The Bears had made two changes to this side who were taken apart by Durham; Hassan Ali, whose arrival was delayed, is finally here. Dan Mousley, who has had various commitments recently with County Club Select XIs and England Lions, was also involved. It looked a sensible bet to bowl first in the gloomy conditions and look to restrict Yorkshire. Davies, orchestrating as ever behind the stumps, switched up his bowling unit frequently, never allowing the opening pair to settle - although Dawid Malan eventually became accustomed to the conditions and played some typically authoritative shots. This was a typical Briggs bowling performance, in which he clean bowled Will Luxton and later trapped wicket keeper Harry Duke in front. His four returned figures of 2/28. Advertisement George Garton was tight in his opening over, but Davies had options and favoured spin. Briggs, Mousley, Lintott and Moeen bowled 15 of the 20 overs between them, with Hassan making different contributions; he took a smart catch when wheeling backwards to remove James Wharton, who had mended the innings with Malan, and then ran out Matt Milnes off his own bowling. Lintott was a tad more expensive but made big breakthroughs in the middle order as Yorkshire rather collapsed 139/2 to 146/7. At one stage, with Malan well set and the foundations in place, the visitors were on for a big score well in excess of 180, but the flurry of wickets halted their momentum. This was an important fightback from the Bears, who couldn't defend 225 at Trent Bridge a week ago and who were well beaten by Durham at Edgbaston on Saturday. It could yet to be significant when they reflect on this campaign as a whole. While they couldn't get Malan, who carried his bat when posting 69 not out from 48 deliveries, they'll have been satisfied with what they left themselves to chase. It was a brilliantly negotiated powerplay from captain Davies and overseas Latham. Less than a week ago, on this very pitch, they were 4/3 - there'd be no such alarm bells here. What was a modest Edgbaston crowd were entertained with a flurry of boundaries - and admittedly poor fielding from Yorkshire players out on the rope, which incidentally was cleared unapologetically by both openers. Advertisement With Yorkshire ragged, the Bears cashed in. Davies passed 50, leading the charge but aptly complemented by the equally classy Latham. The pair put on 100 inside 11 overs, though Latham did fall short of his own half century when he whipped the ball straight to deep mid-wicket. Mousley was promoted to three and found the gaps on a couple of occasions to inch the Bears closer to victory, but he succumbed when Duke took a screamer of a catch off the bowling of Matt Milnes. It was a pity that Davies, who scored 65, couldn't see the Bears over the line either when he holed out to cow corner. Yorkshire dragged it back further when they removed Moeen, tempted into the deep when the Bears still needed 17 from 13. As per, Sam Hain and Ed Barnard came to the rescue at the death to see the Bears home. They're up and running.

NHL top draft prospect, Erie defenseman Schaefer remains upbeat while dealing with death and injury
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Matthew Schaefer's collarbone is fine, and so is the Erie Otter defenseman's perspective on dealing with adversity. Missing the final three months of the season entering his draft eligible year, the 17-year-old said, is nothing compared to what NHL Central Scouting's top-ranked North American skater has already endured . Schaefer lost his mother, Jennifer, to breast cancer in February 2024. Two months earlier, his billet mother in Erie was struck and killed by a train, with her death ruled a suicide. 'I've been through a lot in my life and I'd rather an injury than losing someone I love,' Schaefer said Friday at the NHL's annual pre-draft combine in Buffalo. 'I mean, there's a lot worse things that can happen than injuries. As for recovering from the collarbone he broke in December, Schaefer said: 'I'm pretty positive with my mindset and I'm driven to want to come back. So yeah, obviously injuries, they're not fun. But I'm driven to get better and come back even stronger.' Schaefer was cleared to resume skating May 1 and plans to take part in all of the combine's strength and agility tests with the exception of the bench press and pullups. Upbeat and talkative, he showed no hint of the pain he's dealt with by engaging reporters in opening the press conference by saying: 'What's going on today? Everybody good?' Schaefer then proceeded to playfully joke and also compliment Saginaw Spirit forward Michael Misa, with whom he shared the podium and is the No. 2-ranked North American skater. 'Not able to play as much, I got to watch a little more and got to know him. Great guy on and off ice,' Schaefer said, before saying he'd be happy if Misa was selected ahead of him. Schaefer then displayed humility by acknowledging being surprised to maintain the No. 1 ranking despite having his season cut short after being hurt representing Canada at the world junior championships. 'I played only 17 games and, you know, why are you at the top of that list?' he said. 'I played in those 17 games, I took it as opportunities and I worked as hard as I could and left it all out there.' NHL Central Scouting chief Dan Marr told The Associated Press the debate in ranking Schaefer over Misa was close, and wouldn't be surprised if Misa or perhaps, Boston College center James Hagens , goes No. 1 in the draft in Los Angles on June 27. Hagens is from Long Island and the top-ranked American-born skater. The top-ranked European skaters are Sweden junior teammates, center Anton Frondell and right wing Victor Eklund, who's brother William plays for San Jose. The New York Islanders have the first pick , followed by San Jose and Chicago. What separated Schaefer from the rest in the rankings, Marr said, was what he showed in his 17 games with Erie, and his performance at the Canada's Under-18 summer camp. From Hamilton, Ontario, Schaefer displayed his offensive abilities in scoring seven goals and 22 points with Erie last season. That's what scouts were looking for following his rookie season in which Schaefer had three goals and 17 points in 56 games. Listed at 6-foot-2 and 183 pounds, Schaefer is a two-way defenseman with strong skating and play-making ability. Misa, is from Oakville, Ontario, and enjoyed a breakout third season in Saginaw while making the switch from wing to center. Granted exceptional status to play at 15 in 2022, he led all Canadian Hockey League players this season with 134 points (62 goals, 72 assists) — the most by an OHL player 17 or younger since John Tavares in 2006-07. Tavares, now with Toronto, went No. 1 pick 2009 draft to the Islanders. Schaefer enjoyed the interview process over the past week, and said he had dinner with both the Islanders and Sharks. 'I'm a talker. I love all these interviews and stuff, it keeps me busy,' Schaefer said. He then jokingly frowned when informed Misa had four dinners. Misa holds Schaefer in high regard, and also acknowledged he'd be fine if the defenseman was selected ahead of him. 'You know what you're getting from him every night.
