Breaking Korea Exchange's nearly 70-year monopoly, Nextrade offers extended trading hours, lower commission fees
Nextrade, South Korea's first alternative stock trading system, began operations on Tuesday, introducing a 12-hour trading system that extends beyond traditional market hours.
The key advantages of trading on Nextrade include flexible trading hours and lower commission fees. However, a limited number of available stocks and low initial liquidity are cited as potential drawbacks.
'We will make every effort to ensure that Nextrade provides swift, innovative services that meet the needs of the local capital market,' said Nextrade CEO Kim Hak-soo during the platform's launch ceremony in western Seoul on Tuesday.
Here are key questions and answers regarding the nation's new secondary stock exchange that ended Korea Exchange's monopoly of almost 70 years.
What is Nextrade?
Nextrade is South Korea's first alternative stock exchange. It was launched by a consortium of 34 securities and tech firms in November 2022 to promote competition in the domestic capital market.
After receiving final regulatory approval in February, Nextrade officially went live on Tuesday, breaking the monopoly previously held by Korea Exchange.
What are the benefits of trading on Nextrade?
Unlike KRX, which operates from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Nextrade offers extended trading hours, allowing investors to trade in the early morning or evening.
Nextrade's trading hours span 12 hours a day, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Premarket hours run from 8 to 8:50 a.m., regular market hours from 9 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. and aftermarket hours from 3:40 to 8 p.m.
For operational convenience, trading is paused for 10 minutes twice a day: 8:50 a.m.–9:00 a.m. and 3:20 p.m.–3:30 p.m.
Nextrade will charge commission rates 20-40 percent lower than KRX's fee of 0.0023 percent. Additionally, Nextrade will waive all commission fees until April 30 to encourage trading activity.
Are all listed stocks available on Nextrade?
No. In its first two weeks of operation, Nextrade will offer only 10 stocks for trading:
Kospi-listed stocks: Lotte Shopping, Cheil Worldwide, Kolon Industries, LG Uplus, S-Oil
Kosdaq-listed stocks: Golfzon, Dongkook Pharmaceutical, SFA, YG Entertainment, Com2uS
By March 17, the number of available stocks will increase to 110.
By March 24, it will expand to 350, including major stocks such as Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Hyundai Motor, Naver and Kakao.
Eventually, 800 stocks will be available for trading by March 31.
Currently, exchange-traded funds and exchange-traded notes are not available on Nextrade, but the operator hopes to introduce them later this year.
Can investors choose between KRX and Nextrade?
Yes. During regular market hours (9:00 a.m.–3:20 p.m.), when both Nextrade and KRX operate, investors can choose which platform to use, considering factors such as commission fees, trading speed and bid price.
During premarket and aftermarket hours, when only Nextrade is operational, investors must use Nextrade if they wish to trade.
If investors do not make a selection, brokerage houses will decide on their behalf based on the duty of best execution, meaning they will evaluate which exchange offers better pricing or stability and execute the transaction via the Smart Order Routing system.
Currently, 14 major brokerage firms, including Mirae Asset Securities, Kiwoom Securities, and Samsung Securities, support trading on Nextrade during all operational hours.
Another 14 mid-sized brokerage firms, such as Shinhan Securities and Kakaopay Securities, only offer trading during Nextrade's premarket and aftermarket hours for the time being.

Kospi hits 10-month high on hopes for Lee's economic revival

Foreign inflows, stimulus plans drive 10-month high as new president takes office South Korea's stock market climbed to a 10-month high on optimism that newly inaugurated President Lee Jae-myung will act swiftly to revive the country's sluggish economy through aggressive stimulus and market reforms. The benchmark Kospi breached the 2,800 mark on Thursday for the first time since July 2024, extending gains from the previous session. The index jumped more than 2 percent in early trading to an intraday high of 2,831.11 before paring gains to hover near 2,800 as of 2:30 p.m. The rally followed Wednesday's nearly 3 percent surge, which pushed the index to a year-to-date high of 2,770.84. Foreign investors net bought 1 trillion won ($735.4 million) and institutions added 200 billion won, while individuals sold 1.2 trillion won to lock in profits. The buying continued Thursday, with foreigners and institutions snapping up another 670 billion won and 400 billion won, respectively, as retail investors offloaded 1 trillion won more. Markets are responding to Lee's full-throttle policy agenda centered on restoring livelihoods and reigniting growth. 'We will begin by restoring livelihoods and revitalizing the economy,' Lee said Wednesday, launching an emergency economic task force as his first executive order. Among his initial directives was finalizing a supplementary budget. Lee pledged at least 30 trillion won in fresh stimulus to be drafted, following the 13.8 trillion won package approved ahead of the election. Political and market observers expect the proposal to be submitted to parliament next month, with the funds largely targeting public support measures such as local business vouchers to revive domestic demand. Beyond the extra budget, Lee's broader economic strategy hinges on expansive fiscal spending, with 210 trillion won in government funds planned over his five-year term. His agenda includes expanded welfare, support for strategic sectors such as artificial intelligence and efforts to lift long-term growth. Lee aims to lift Korea's annual growth rate to 3 percent, up from the sub-1 percent pace forecast for this year. He also envisions transforming the country into the world's third-largest AI powerhouse and elevating it to the rank of the world's fifth-strongest nation during his presidency. Investor sentiment is also buoyed by Lee's push to strengthen capital markets. On Thursday, the ruling Democratic Party of Korea reintroduced a revised Commercial Act aimed at reinforcing minority shareholder rights — legislation previously shelved under the former administration and now central to Lee's pro-market agenda. The bill proposes sweeping governance reforms, including expanding directors' fiduciary duties to shareholders, renaming outside directors as independent directors, mandating cumulative voting, expanding separate elections for audit committee members, introducing virtual shareholder meetings, and tightening the 3 percent rule that limits major shareholders' voting rights in audit board appointments. To expedite implementation, all provisions will take immediate effect upon promulgation except for electronic voting, which will require system upgrades. The local market is moving to shed the 'Korea Discount' as the new administration accelerates policy implementation, said senior market analyst Lee Kyoung-min of Daishin Securities. 'The push for Commercial Act revisions is fueling a revaluation of underperforming stocks, while expectations for a large-scale supplementary budget are bolstering hopes for a recovery in Korea's deeply frozen economy,' he said, noting that robust foreign inflows are driving the rally. 'Stronger policy expectations are putting upward pressure on the won, creating conditions for a potential pickup in foreign capital inflows,' he added. The Korean won strengthened to an eight-month high against the greenback on Thursday, breaching the 1,350 won-per-dollar level for the first time since October 2024.

Nuclear boom propels Doosan to 7th among Korea's largest chaebol groups

Doosan Enerbility eyes global expansion as US, Europe reignite nuclear ambitions Doosan Group, a Korean power generation-to-heavy equipment conglomerate, has shaken up the leaderboard of the country's largest conglomerates as its listed companies, namely Doosan Enerbility, saw their stock prices surge in the first five months of this year on the back of the United States doubling down on nuclear energy. According to the Korea Exchange, the combined market capitalization of Doosan Group's seven listed companies, including Doosan Bobcat, Doosan Enerbility, Doosan Fuel Cell and Doosan Robotics, stood at approximately 47.9 trillion won ($35.2 billion) as of 2:40 p.m. on Thursday. With this, Doosan has found itself sitting in the seventh place on the list of the biggest conglomerates in Korea, led by Samsung, SK, Hyundai Motor and LG. Doosan, which was outside the top 10 standings at the end of last year, saw its rankings go up to the 10th place in December and continued to make its way up the ladder to overtake other conglomerates such as Posco, Kakao and Celltrion. Doosan Enerbility, a power generation equipment and construction firm, played a pivotal role in shooting up the conglomerate's market capitalization. The stock price of Doosan Enerbility soared to reach 45,650 won per share during intraday trading on Thursday, a whopping 160 percent jump from the 17,550 won per share at the end of last year. As Doosan Enerbility's Kospi standings leaped to as high as the 13th last month from the 37th spot at the end of 2024, it accounted for some 80 percent of Doosan Group's 19-trillion-won market cap growth during that period. Doosan Enerbility's surging stock price is now expected to gain even more, as US President Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders to reestablish America as the global leader in nuclear energy last week after repeatedly pledging to revive the country's nuclear energy sector. As the US aims to increase the country's nuclear energy capacity from 100 gigawatt today to 400 GW by 2050 and have 10 new large nuclear reactors with complete designs under construction by 2030, Doosan Enerbility finds itself in a favorable business environment based on its experiences in building nuclear reactors and plants. Hur Min-ho, an analyst at Daishin Securities, noted in a recent report that the US executive orders 'will speed up the entrance' of Korean nuclear power firms in the US, the largest nuclear power plant market in the world. The US is not the only market Doosan Enerbility has set its eyes on. It is also a key member of Korea's consortium led by state-run Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and Korea Electric Power Corp, which is only a few steps away from finalizing a $18 billion nuclear power project with the Czech Republic due to a court injunction blocking the contract signing. '(Doosan Enerbility) has not only supplied key equipment for (the Korean consortium's) Czech project but also delivered nuclear reactors and steam generators to Westinghouse's US- and China-bound AP1000 and is in discussions for supplying equipment to Westinghouse's order for three power plant projects in Poland and two power plant projects in Bulgaria,' said Hur. Doosan Enerbility is also pinning hopes on Kepco's power plant export talks with Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and Turkey along with other countries. Yang Il-woo, an analyst at Samsung Securities, said the International Energy Agency and International Atomic Energy Agency project forecast that the global energy production from nuclear power plants will triple by 2030 with the active implementation of innovative technologies such as small modular reactors. "European countries such as Denmark, Italy and Spain have become favorable toward nuclear power plants. … India plans to triple its nuclear power plant capacity by 2032 while Egypt and Turkey are looking to build new nuclear power plants,' said Yang. 'In terms of nuclear power plants as investment factors, Doosan Enerbility's price-to-earnings ratio will be high.'

Seoul shares open higher on chip, heavy machinery gains

South Korean stocks opened higher Thursday, boosted by gains in semiconductors, heavy industry, and blue-chip shares. This upbeat start came despite a mixed finish on Wall Street overnight. The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 23.05 points, or 0.83 percent, to 2,793.89 in early trading. The market built on Wednesday's 2.66 percent surge, which followed the inauguration of President Lee Jae-myung. Lee's election came after the ousting of former conservative President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was removed in December following a failed attempt to declare martial law. Investor sentiment in Seoul was more positive than in the US, where markets responded cautiously to economic data. The Institute for Supply Management reported its Services Purchasing Managers' Index fell to 49.9 in May, slipping below the 50-point mark for the first time since June 2023, suggesting a contraction. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.22 percent. The S&P 500 rose 0.32 percent, and the Nasdaq edged up 0.01 percent. Leading South Korean stocks advanced. Samsung Electronics gained 0.61 percent, and chip rival SK hynix jumped 3.56 percent. Hanwha Aerospace rose 3.67 percent, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries added 1.4 percent, and POSCO Holdings climbed 3.26 percent. In contrast, bio and battery stocks declined. Samsung Biologics dipped 0.19 percent, and LG Energy Solution slipped 0.17 percent. The Korean won strengthened against the US dollar, trading at 1,360.90 won as of 9:15 a.m., up 8.6 won from the previous close. (Yonhap)
