Malaysian tycoon Robert Kuok's daughter takes over Shangri-La Asia CEO role, earns over RM310,000 a month

Malay Mail16-07-2025
SINGAPORE, July 16 — Kuok Hui Kwong, daughter of Malaysian billionaire Tan Sri Robert Kuok, has been appointed chief executive of Shangri-La Asia, the Hong Kong and Singapore dual-listed luxury hotel group announced in a stock exchange filing today. Her appointment takes effect on August 1.
The 47-year-old has served as the company's chairman since 2017 and has been an executive director since 2016.
Shangri-La Asia said her new role as both chairman and CEO is expected to improve 'strategic cohesion and operational execution by ensuring a unified and consistent vision across all levels of leadership'.
She succeeds former CEO Lim Beng Chee, who retired at the end of 2022. Lim remains on the board as a non-executive director.
According to The Straits Times, Kuok Hui Kwong is the sixth of Robert Kuok's eight children and ranked 40th on Fortune's 2024 list of the most powerful women in Asia.
Under her current contract, she receives a monthly base salary of HK$576,000 (RM311,630), along with discretionary bonuses and pension benefits.
She also holds a direct and indirect interest in 95.57 million shares, or about 2.7 per cent, of the company.
Kuok Hui Kwong graduated with a bachelor's degree in East Asian studies from Harvard University and previously served as managing director and CEO of SCMP Group, which publishes the South China Morning Post. The Kuok Group sold the media arm to Chinese tech giant Alibaba in 2016.
Founded by Robert Kuok in 1971 with the opening of the Shangri-La Hotel in Singapore, Shangri-La Asia today owns 81 of the more than 100 hotels it operates under its four brands: Shangri-La, Kerry, Hotel Jen and Traders. As of its 2024 annual report, its hotel assets had a net asset value of US$10.83 billion.
For the financial year ended December 2024, the group reported revenue of US$2.19 billion, a 2 per cent increase year on year, but net profit fell 12.3 per cent to US$161.4 million, weighed down by rising operating and financing costs.
Following news of Kwok Hui Kwong's appointment, Shangri-La Asia's shares on the Singapore Exchange rose 2.4 per cent to HK$4.67 as of 3.11pm today, though they remain down nearly 14 per cent for the year.

Perak one of M'sia's top durian-producing states last year, says MB

Perak menteri besar Saarani Mohmad said the state is focusing on widening access to its premium kampung durians through branding strategies. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Perak has emerged as one of the leading durian-producing states in Malaysia, with a production volume of 59,217.3 tonnes worth RM462.28 million in 2024. Menteri besar Saarani Mohamad lauded this as proof of Perak's capability in the durian export market. Saarani said Malaysia exported durians produced in Perak to more than 40 countries between 2017 and 2023, with 73% of the export value concentrated in China. 'In 2022, Malaysia's durian export value reached RM1.14 billion, including RM887 million to China. 'Demand for varieties such as Musang King, Black Thorn, D24, IOI, and premium kampung durians from Perak continues to rise,' Bernama reported him as saying at the closing ceremony of the 2025 Perak Durian Fest at Dataran Selama today. He said Malaysia's durian export value is expected to reach RM1.8 billion by 2030, with an annual growth rate of 20% to 25%. Saarani said Perak's current focus is on widening access to premium kampung durians through branding strategies, quality certification and digital marketing. 'Durians from Perak are also in demand in Singapore, Hong Kong, the US and Australia, with the price of kampung durians from Malaysia reaching RM29 per 600g and Musang King durians being sold for up to RM400 per 2.5kg. 'Some local entrepreneurs are aggressively promoting durian-based products like durian chocolates, durian coffee, durian cakes, instant tempoyak sambal and durian ice cream in markets like China,' he said.

Sri Lanka court orders Singapore firm to pay US$1bn for marine disaster

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's highest court has ordered a Singapore-based shipping company to pay US$1 billion in damages for causing the country's worst marine pollution disaster. The MV X-Press Pearl, owned by Express Feeders, sank off Colombo Port in June 2021 after a fire burned for nearly two weeks. The 361-page judgment stated, 'The X-Press Pearl... shall make further compensation payments as may be directed by this court.' Environmental groups filed the case, accusing both the shipping firm and government authorities of failing to prevent the ecological catastrophe. Initially, the company paid $7.85 million for cleanup and fishermen's compensation. However, in 2023, a London court limited their liability to 19 million pounds ($25 million), a decision Sri Lanka is appealing. The vessel carried 81 containers of hazardous materials, including acids and lead ingots. Microplastic pellets from the wreck polluted an 80-kilometre stretch of coastline, halting fishing for months. Investigations suggest the fire started due to a nitric acid leak, which the crew reportedly knew about days before the blaze. Sri Lanka has also filed a separate lawsuit in Singapore, though proceedings are paused pending the London court's ruling. The Singaporean firm has not yet responded to the verdict. – AFP

Ringgit ends higher on Malaysia-US trade deal optimism

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit ended higher against the US dollar, buoyed by optimism that Malaysia could secure more favourable trade negotiations with the US, said an analyst. The local currency has traded higher versus the US dollar for the fifth consecutive day. Investment, trade and industry minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz said Malaysia is actively engaging in discussions with the US over the impending 25% tariff rate set to take effect on Aug 1, aiming to secure a rate below 20%. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said regional tailwinds further lifted sentiment after US president Donald Trump concluded a trade deal with Japan on Tuesday, which included reducing tariffs on the import of Japanese goods into the US to 15% from 25%. 'These developments are fuelling hopes that Washington's broader tariff strategy is shifting from confrontation to compromise. 'Against this backdrop, investors see Malaysia as a likely beneficiary of the next wave of bilateral deals,' he told Bernama. Innes added that the ringgit's recent gains may signal its potential to benefit from improved trade conditions following the US-Japan agreement. At 6pm, the ringgit rose to 4.2135/4.2210 against the greenback from yesterday's close of 4.2255/4.2300. At the close, the ringgit was higher against a basket of major currencies. It advanced against the Japanese yen to 2.8751/2.8804 from 2.8837/2.8870, rose against the British pound to 5.7080/5.7182 from 5.7230/5.7291, and inched up against the euro to 4.9517/4.9605 from 4.9586/4.9639. The local currency was firmer against regional peers, except the Philippine peso. It increased vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.2995/3.3057 from 3.3071/3.3109, appreciated against the Thai baht to 13.0570/13.0863 from 13.1370/13.1567, and improved versus the Indonesian rupiah to 258.5/259.1 from 259.1/259.5. However, the local currency traded slightly lower against the Philippine peso, at 7.43/7.45, compared to 7.42/7.44 at yesterday's close.
