Rian Johnson reveals why his 'Star Wars' trilogy never happened: 'It was all very conceptual'

Johnson who directed the space opera 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' released in 2017, broke the silence on his long-rumoured 'Star Wars' trilogy that never started.

He shared that at the time, he and
were developing ideas for the three-film saga. However, once 'Knives Out' was out, Johnson's attention switched primarily to the murder mystery blockbuster.
Johnson explains how 'Knives Out' changed everything
"Nothing really happened with it," Johnson said, adding, "We had a great time working together, and they said, 'Let's keep doing it.' I said, 'Great!' I would kick ideas around with Kathy. The short version is 'Knives Out' happened.
I went off and made 'Knives Out,' and was off to the races, busy making murder mysteries. It's the sort of thing if, down the line, there's an opportunity to do it, or do something else in 'Star Wars,' I would be thrilled.
But right now I'm just doing my own stuff, and pretty happy," reported Variety.
It never got past the concept stage
Johnson shared that his trilogy was "all very conceptual" and that he never developed an "outline or a treatment or anything" for the project.
Why he'd still love to return to 'Star Wars'
In 2022, Johnson said he "would be sad" if he never directed a 'Star Wars' film again, noting that "it wouldn't be the end of the world for anyone."
"But I would be sad," he said, continuing, "I love the world. I love the people. I love 'Star Wars' fans. I love the passion with which they engage in it. There's nothing like telling a story in this world and then experiencing people truly connecting to it and letting you know that. It's extraordinary," reported Variety.

The 33-year-old actor will star alongside the previously announced cast, which includes the names of Andrew Garfield, Yura Borisov, Monica Barbaro, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, Cooper Hoffman, and Ike Barinholtz, according to the entertainment news outlet Deadline. Described as a 'comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence", 'Artificial" is helmed by the acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino. The film will recount the tumultuous period at OpenAI in 2023 that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired in a matter of days.
