Experts' tips to not get ‘stranded' at Newark Airport: ‘Avoid any connections through EWR'

New York Post07-05-2025

Flight passengers departing and connecting through Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey are sharing concerns about travel delays amid recent airport mishaps — as experts share alternative ideas and bus companies report increases in ridership.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a ground delay for EWR due to staffing shortages, weather and construction issues as a recent report found that air traffic controllers briefly lost radar and radio signals last week.

Brandon Blewett, the Texas-based author of 'How to Avoid Strangers on Airplanes,' told Fox News Digital he has found EWR to be less reliable in recent days, but would still use the airport.
'If it was New Jersey, I'd likely still fly into Newark but choose the earliest flights, which typically face fewer delays,' said Blewett.
'I'd avoid any connections through EWR right now … for better reliability,' he said.
For travelers to and from New York City, Blewett suggested looking at other airports.

'I'd consider alternatives to EWR like LGA and JFK until the runway reopens and ATC staffing stabilizes,' said Blewett. 'It may be more of a headache in traffic, but it seems you're less likely to be stranded for the time being.'

Gary Leff, a Texas-based travel industry expert and author of the blog 'View From the Wing,' told Fox News Digital that passengers should avoid New York airports for connecting flights.
'If you're connecting, it's often a good idea to avoid New York airports. If you originate in New York, it really depends on where in the city you're based,' he said.

'While Newark is facing significant problems right now, I'm not sure I'd bounce over to JFK if I lived on Staten Island,' he added. 'Weigh the evils.'
Some passengers have taken to social media to discuss the disruptions at EWR. One Reddit post entitled, 'Newark airport unsafe???' in the 'r/newjersey' forum garnered over 1,000 reactions and hundreds of comments.
The user asked, 'Should I do the unthinkable and switch my EWR flight this weekend to JFK? how nervous should we be about this?'

'I just flew into Newark this morning from New Mexico. I survived,' commented one person.

Another user shared, 'Just flew into EWR … Flight delayed 1 hr, checked in bags on a different flight (2.5 hrs later) because of plane weight issues, and had to be pulled by a tug because the plane overshot the jet bridge by 1.5 ft.'
Said another person, 'I flew into Newark yesterday and the delays were annoying.'
A Redditor commented, 'I flew out of EWR last week and back yesterday. All the delays we had both times were infuriating. Never had that experience before. And the times just kept changing. I almost changed my flight yesterday to LaGuardia or Trenton.'
'The issue is [that] air traffic controllers are in demand and they're very understaffed,' said one user. 'EWR obviously has a lot of traffic, so I kind of get it.'

'Ticket sales at this location are also up more than 80% year over year.'
The spokesperson added, 'We are closely monitoring the situation and are well-prepared to welcome passengers impacted by flight cancellations and delays.'
The spokesperson also said, 'In times like these, bus travel serves as a vital alternative, offering travelers an affordable, accessible and dependable way to reach their destinations.'

Five Indian nationals from Qatar killed in road accident in Kenya

A bus ferrying a number of tourists, 28 of whom were confirmed to be Indian nationals from Qatar, rolled and landed in a ditch in central Kenya, killing six people. The deceased have been identified as Riya Ann (41), her daughter Tyra Rodriguez (8), Jasna Kuttikkattuchalil (29), her 18-month-old daughter Roohie Mehrin, and Geetha Shoji Isaac (58). The identity of the sixth victim is yet to be confirmed. The group had departed from Qatar on June 6 for Eid holidays and were scheduled to return on Wednesday. Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that the Nyandarua County Commissioner, Abdrisack Jaldesa, had stated that the accident happened as the bus was carrying the tourists from Nakuru County to Nyahururu Thomson Falls in Laikipia County, before tumbling into the ditch in the Gichaka area, 41 km south of Nyahururu Town. Xinhua further added that eyewitnesses said the bus was traveling along the road in the rain when the driver lost control and careered off the road before ultimately hitting a tree and the vehicle rolling over several times, killing the six tourists in the process. Local residents had stated that they rushed to the scene of the accident in an attempt to rescue survivors trapped inside the bus. Cleanup continues in downtown Waxahachie after freight train derailment involving ethanol tankers

A freight train derailment in Waxahachie is continuing to disrupt activity in part of the city's downtown. Train derails late Monday CBS News Texas A Union Pacific freight train with 110 cars derailed around 11:30 p.m. Monday, shutting down roads from Peters Street to Gibson Street, according to the city of Waxahachie. No injuries were reported. It's not clear why 16 cars came off the tracks, with 14 of those overturning on their sides. "We've had some smaller derailments that are usually just one or two cars and that can be quickly cleaned up and taken care of, but nothing to this extent," said Waxahachie City Manager Michael Scott. Tankers carried ethanol According to Scott, several of the overturned tankers were carrying ethanol, a highly flammable liquid. Hazardous materials specialists were on scene Tuesday. "As much as there's ethanol in these tankers, there's been no leaks detected," Scott said. "And so it's a safe scene." Even though there is no current threat to public safety, the city urges caution for anyone traveling near the impacted area. Businesses affected by closures Several of the businesses closest to the site will likely be closed until the cleanup is done. "It's a good thing that did happen late at night instead of during the day because it's pretty busy in downtown Waxahachie," said Tracey Richardson, the owner of Tru Love Salon in downtown Waxahachie. The salon isn't far from where the incident happened, but the biggest impact Richardson has seen is the traffic. There are multiple road closures surrounding the tracks. "Backed-up clients are running a little behind, and we're all trying to just work with them on that," she said. "Everything's about a 15-minute delay because they're all getting stuck at the traffic." Community seeks answers As other surrounding businesses wait for all the damage to be cleaned up, they wait for answers, too. "I've never seen anything like this," said Ivan Diaz de Leon, who owns Ellis County Epoxy. "Was it a railroad issue? Was it a weather issue? It's just, it's weird. Never seen this before." Union Pacific doesn't have an estimate as to when the cleanup will be done. When the derailed train cars are all removed, the roads will need to be assessed to ensure they are safe to drive on. Cleanup could take days The entire process could take days. In the meantime, the city is encouraging people to steer clear of the area to allow crews to work quickly and safely.

Flight passenger stands firm against entitled seat swapper's demands: ‘I'm not moving'

As summer travel kicks into high gear, the game of musical chairs in the sky shows no signs of slowing down as the seat-swapping trend continues. In the 'r/americanairlines' forum on Reddit, a user titled a post, 'Finally happened to me.' Advertisement The person wrote, 'Maybe I should stop reading about seat swappers … because it finally happened to me. Get in my 2A seat and I tell the woman, 'Hey, before you get settled, I'm at the window.' And she goes, 'Well, my husband and I are apart in separate aisle seats.'' The user continued in the post, 'I go, 'OK, well, I'm not moving, so I hope you figure it out.' She goes, 'Well, it's still business class.' No.' The Reddit poster added, 'To clear this up, I'm on an airbus 2×2. No middle. And it was my seat that I paid for. Moving to an aisle when I booked a window months ago is not the same … otherwise [I] would've obliged,' the flight passenger clarified. The post garnered over 1,000 reactions as people took to the comments section to discuss the issue and share their own encounters with seat swappers on board flights. Advertisement A traveler's Reddit post about seat swapping on airplanes kicked off a debate on the practice. kasto – 'I'm not at all for seat swapping. It's ridiculous,' wrote one user. Another user wrote, 'Returned recently from Munich and the lady across the aisle kept asking me to switch seats so she could sit next to her husband.' Advertisement Another person wrote, 'I mean, there's no harm in asking, but if the answer is 'No,' politely drop it and move on.' 'Unless a person has some sort of illness where their traveling partner needs immediate proximity, there's no point in this,' wrote one user. Many users addressed fellow flyers' need to be near their spouses or family members on planes. 'Why can't grown-ups just suck it up if they are not next to one another for a few hours?' commented one user. Advertisement A Redditor wrote that she and her spouse 'fly often, and sometimes we can't sit next to each other — big deal. We never ask someone to trade seats.' A user admitted, 'I am one of these seat swappers any time I travel with family. We reserve a row and the window and aisle seat … hoping no one gets the middle … If we happen to get a middle [seat]er, we ask them if it's OK if they get the window instead or aisle. Haven't had a complaint yet … Hoping it stays that way.' California-based etiquette expert Rosalinda Randall weighed in on the situation, telling Fox News Digital that 'no one has the obligation to switch their seat.' 'The person making the request has no right to expect [this] or make a scene when they don't get their way,' said Randall. Randall said there may be some circumstances in which it would be a minor inconvenience to switch. 'It's a short flight, you can find a similar seat in another row, or anyone would be an improvement from the passenger [you're currently] sitting next to,' said Randall.
