Orioles Reunite With Veteran Reliever In Trade With Braves

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Baltimore Orioles have reunited with right-handed reliever Scott Blewett from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for cash considerations, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Atlanta designated Blewett for assignment to bring franchise legend Craig Kimbrel back to the major leagues. The Orioles previously designated Blewett for assignment just days after acquiring him after the Minnesota Twins placed him on waivers. The Phillies defeated the Braves 5-4. More Photo byBlewett appeared in only two games with the Orioles before landing in Atlanta, pitching 4 1/3 innings and not allowing an earned run. Blewett had a similar stat line with the Twins, pitching 4 2/3 innings and allowing just one earned run. Blewett would then go on to land a roster spot for longer than a month with the Braves, where he appeared in 11 games with a 5.51 ERA before being traded back to Baltimore. Blewett is in his fourth season in the majors and has appeared in the most games in his career this season, with 15 across the three different teams he has suited up for. Blewett is out of options, and teams see that he can be a valuable pickup when available, as he is headed back to a prior employer. While Blewett has a below-average fastball velocity this season, sitting at 93.4 mph, he has been effective in situations during the season. Blewett is in the 90th percentile in getting hitters to whiff on his pitches, along with being in the 91st percentile in groundball percentage. Blewett has yet to stick with a team this season, but with Baltimore faltering, this may be the opportunity he needs to prove himself at the major league level. Braves calling up Craig Kimbrel from Triple-A after bullpen's 7-run meltdown in 9th inning vs. D-backs

Craig Kimbrel is returning to the Atlanta Braves bullpen. The Braves are calling up their former All-Star closer from Triple-A Gwinnett, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported on Thursday. Atlanta officially announced the move on Friday, adding that reliever Daysbel Hernández (2.22 ERA in 25 appearances) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation. Advertisement The decision was likely prompted by the Braves blowing a six-run lead in the ninth inning Thursday versus the Arizona Diamondbacks, leading to an 11-10 loss. Atlanta took a 10-5 lead into the ninth. Three of Arizona's first four batters reached base against Scott Blewett, including home runs by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Alek Thomas. Raisel Iglesias relieved Blewett and didn't fare better, allowing five of the next six batters on base with RBI hits by Ketel Marte, Ildemaro Vargas and Eugenio Suárez resulting in four runs and an Arizona lead. Ultimately, five runs were charged to Blewett and Iglesias gave up the lead with the three he allowed. "We're not a bad team. We're a good team that's playing bad," Braves manager Brian Snitker said after the game. "We're all going to be miserable, and we should. We didn't execute and put the game away, and we've got to do that." With the loss, Atlanta dropped to 27-34, placing them fourth in the National League West and 11 games behind the first-place New York Mets. The Braves are also seven games out of the NL's third wild-card playoff berth. Advertisement In 18 minor league appearances this season (15 for Gwinnett), Kimbrel has compiled a 2.00 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 18 innings with 8 walks and 9 hits allowed. Kimbrel, 37, pitched the first five seasons of his career with the Braves, collecting a 1.43 ERA and 186 saves in 294 appearances. He won the 2011 National League Rookie of the Year award and made four All-Star teams during his stint with Atlanta. The right-hander was traded to the San Diego Padres before the 2015 season and he's played for six other teams since then. Last season, he had a 5.33 ERA for the Orioles in 57 appearances despite a strikeout rate of 12.6 per nine innings and was released in late September. Advertisement However, Kimbrel had a 2.80 ERA, 53 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings and 23 saves before the All-Star break. 'Hopefully, he can replicate what he did the first half of last year,' Snitker said when Atlanta signed Kimbrel in the spring. 'It would be awesome if he could come in and do that." During his 15 MLB seasons, Kimbrel has compiled a 2.59 ERA and 440 saves with a strikeout rate of 14.1 per 9 innings. Blewett's outing was his last for the Braves. The team announced that he was traded to the Baltimore Orioles on Friday for cash considerations. Atlanta was planning to DFA Blewett (5.51 ERA in 11 games) after Thursday's game, but worked out a deal with Baltimore. It's a return to Baltimore for the right-hander, who appeared in two games for the Orioles before being designated for assignment and traded to Atlanta. Blewett began the season with the Minnesota Twins, but received a DFA and was picked up by the Orioles.

Experts' tips to not get ‘stranded' at Newark Airport: ‘Avoid any connections through EWR'

Flight passengers departing and connecting through Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey are sharing concerns about travel delays amid recent airport mishaps — as experts share alternative ideas and bus companies report increases in ridership. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a ground delay for EWR due to staffing shortages, weather and construction issues as a recent report found that air traffic controllers briefly lost radar and radio signals last week. Advertisement Brandon Blewett, the Texas-based author of 'How to Avoid Strangers on Airplanes,' told Fox News Digital he has found EWR to be less reliable in recent days, but would still use the airport. 'If it was New Jersey, I'd likely still fly into Newark but choose the earliest flights, which typically face fewer delays,' said Blewett. 'I'd avoid any connections through EWR right now … for better reliability,' he said. For travelers to and from New York City, Blewett suggested looking at other airports. Advertisement 'I'd consider alternatives to EWR like LGA and JFK until the runway reopens and ATC staffing stabilizes,' said Blewett. 'It may be more of a headache in traffic, but it seems you're less likely to be stranded for the time being.' 3 Leah Wagner, 47, sits on the floor in front of the United Airlines check-in at Terminal C in Newark Liberty International Airport, on May 6, 2025 in Newark, New Jersey. Braves' streak ends on tough night for bullpen; Spencer Strider discusses latest injury

ATLANTA — When Scott Blewett was asked if friends or family members would be at Truist Park to see him make his Atlanta Braves debut, the 29-year-old pitcher laughed and said, 'No. I've kind of been all over the place, so nobody knows where to catch me these days.' That was Monday, the day Blewett joined his third major-league team in a two-week span, and one day before the 6-foot-6 right-hander was thrust into the first start of his MLB career. He stepped in for Spencer Strider, who strained a hamstring Monday and went on the 15-day injured list. Advertisement Serving in an 'opener' role because the Braves had no rested starters suitable for the assignment, Blewett pitched well enough, giving up a two-run homer to Lars Nootbaar but no other scoring in three innings before exiting after a leadoff walk in the fourth. The same couldn't be said for three of five Braves relievers who followed him: Rafael Montero, Enyel De Los Santos and Nathan Wiles gave up multiple runs each in a 10-4 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, who snapped their five-game losing streak and ended Atlanta's four-game winning streak. The Braves lost for the first time since adding Alex Verdugo, and despite homers from Sean Murphy and Matt Olson and a career-high four walks from Marcell Ozuna, who leads the majors with 23. Atlanta's thrift-store bullpen has had some shining moments recently, but tonight was not one of them. — David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) April 23, 2025 'Walks hurt throughout the whole game,' Braves manager Brian Snitker said about his pitchers issuing them. Montero and De Los Santos had two walks apiece. 'It was just not one guy. Had some key walks, and you can't do that. It's tough to survive doing that. But in the four-game winning streak, that bullpen was nails, solid. And it's going to happen. We're going to have games where it's just not going to go our way.' The Braves will have Bryce Elder on the mound for the series finale Wednesday afternoon against the Cardinals' Miles Mikolas. 'We need a good start,' Snitker said. 'We need Bryce to be efficient and chew up some innings, and then we should be fine.' Wiles allowed four hits and three runs in the ninth inning of his big-league debut, after arriving from Triple A earlier in the day. Murphy's homer was his sixth in 12 games after opening the season on the IL. 'He looks like he did what the first half of '23 when he made the All-Star team,' Snitker said of Murphy. 'And he was very adamant about that when he sat in my office and wanted to come off the IL, and said that. And, man, it's been good.' Advertisement For Blewett, it was his first start in 22 appearances over parts of four MLB seasons with four teams, including five games for three teams this season. His bouncing around had little to do with performance and much to do with options. Because Blewett has no minor-league options, he couldn't be sent to the minors without going through waivers. After making two long-relief appearances with the Minnesota Twins in early April, allowing one run in 4 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and no walks, the Twins needed a fresh bullpen arm and Blewett was waived. He was claimed by Baltimore and pitched twice in a four-day stretch for the Orioles, giving up just one unearned run in 4 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and one walk, before the Orioles, too, needed a fresh arm and designated him for assignment. They traded Blewett to the Braves for cash on Sunday, and he joined his new team Monday, his second stint in the Braves organization. He spent one season with the Double-A Mississippi Braves in 2023. 'The Braves were actually the organization that kind of jump-started my career,' Blewett said. 'So, it's an honor to be back and to be in this clubhouse for the first time and back in this organization. When I came over here, they kind of taught me how to pitch. I was still pretty green when it came to pitching, so I learned how to pitch here and then went over to Taiwan, learned a third pitch, and here we are.' He made seven starts in Taiwan late in 2023, where he learned to throw the splitter that has been a difference-maker, complementing his fastball and slider. After pitching in five games as a rookie with the Kansas City Royals in 2020 and 2021, Blewett didn't return to the majors until 2024 with the Twins. He posted a 1.53 ERA in 16 games over the past two seasons with Minnesota and Baltimore before his Braves debut. Advertisement 'He was great,' Murphy said. 'He had a three-pitch mix and we got through three-plus (innings), and we were able to get through the lineup more than once.' After grinding through a year-long rehab from his second major elbow surgery, Strider made just one start before returning to the 15-day IL Monday with an injury he would've never expected. He strained his right hamstring doing a light between-starts throwing session Monday, one day before he was scheduled to face the Cardinals in his second start since returning from internal-brace elbow surgery. 'I was at 75 feet throwing very low effort, and made a throw and kind of felt a sting, and thought that was weird,' Strider said. 'Wasn't sure where it came from, really. And then I made another throw — man, it felt like a pull on my backside. Walked right off (the field). It felt like I pulled something.' Neither Strider nor the Braves medical staff could say how long he's likely to be shelved, since hamstring injuries are notoriously difficult to predict. The good news from his MRI: It's a Grade 1 strain, the least serious. No torn tissue. Last year, center fielder Michael Harris II had a Grade 2 hamstring strain and was sidelined for two months. Still, Strider was frustrated for obvious reasons and searching for answers. If you surveyed the Braves, Strider would likely be deemed least likely to sustain a leg-muscle strain, considering the extensive stretching and warmup routine he does before every workout and game. He's able to contort his body into positions that other players say are painful just to watch. 'I'm willing to say I do more than just about anybody in the game to prevent little things like this from happening,' Strider said. 'I don't have any explanation for it. I've spent a lot of time thinking of one. You know, the only thing I can really come up with is just, you become deconditioned to pitching. I haven't pitched in a year, and so the body likes routine, and pitching is a very aggressive, taxing movement. And I just haven't done it in a while. Advertisement 'Why it didn't happen in my bullpen or when I was throwing 400 feet the other day, I don't have any clue.' Strider and the Braves believe he'll be able to resume throwing soon, though he obviously won't be able to use his legs until the hamstring in his push-off leg heals. 'Try to keep my arm moving and workload high enough,' he said, 'so that once we get to a point where I can get on the mound and throw with higher intensity, we're ready to do so and we don't have to build back up my arm.' Strider said he's disappointed that he's back to only watching his teammates — 'taking up space here again,' he said — rather than competing alongside them. 'It sucks,' he said. 'I have done absolutely nothing to help this team, the organization in the last year. I finally get to a point where I can earn my paycheck and go on the field and help us win games, and now I'm back lying on a table while they wave machines over me. 'There's nothing to do but control what I can control and control my response to it. So, try to be better as a result of it and get back to where I can help the team win.' Told what Strider said about feeling he hasn't helped the team, Snitker said, 'Everybody knows what he's all about, what he brings, and how important he is. I don't think anybody's going to ever feel like he's taking up space. I think everybody's glad that you can see him. You come in there every day and put your eyes on him, because he's a valuable teammate to everybody.'
