
Sarawak wushu sanda team team seeks to complete historic mission at national tourney in Seremban
KUCHING (May 16): The Sarawak wushu sanda (free sparring) team is looking forward to complete a historic mission at the 14th National Youth KBS-KPM-AG Asia Wushu Championship in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan on May 29 to June 2.
The seven-strong team led by state sanda head coach Tsan Nieng Khai is targeting to contribute four gold medals to the Sarawak wushu contingent, which includes 24 taolu (optional routine) athletes.
Shouldering Sarawak's challenge are all new faces, who were selected during a state-wide tour headed by Tsan and coach Lyde Lait.
The team comprises Maevess Choo Lee Ying (Girls U12 39kg), Leeroy Valentine Lavern (Boys U14 52kg), Max Choo Jun Howe (Boys U14 48kg), Reon Chrisson Youngle (Boys U17 60kg), Lima Jauku Youngley (Boys U13 45kg), Ar Rayyan Abdullah Hamizan (Boys U17 75kg), and Putra Irfan Dzakwan Abdul Shukri (Boys U17 48kg).
'Despite fielding new faces, l am quite confident that the athletes can pose a strong challenge and give other teams a good run for their money.
'The athletes are undergoing a intensive centralised training at MMA Hub Kuching, Boulevard Shopping Mall from May 12 to 24,' said Tsan who is also MMA Hub owner and Sarawak Mixed Martial Arts Association president.

MMA spectacle set to thrill Kuching with 35 bouts at Boulevard Mall tomorrow

KUCHING (July 26): Mixed martial arts (MMA) fans in Kuching are in for a thrilling spectacle tomorrow (July 27), as the Sarawak Mixed Martial Arts Sports Hub (SMASH) at Boulevard Shopping Mall hosts an explosive day of combat sports action featuring 35 adrenaline-charged bouts. The one-day event, jointly organised by SMASH and Mad Fight Club, will feature over 80 fighters from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Brunei competing in MMA, boxing, and kickboxing matchups. 'This is a fantastic platform to not only showcase the talent of our local MMA athletes but also to promote the growth of combat sports in Sarawak. 'We are indeed proud and honoured to organise this kind of competition and bring the MMA fights to Sarawak,' said organising chairman Tsan Nieng Khai who is SMASH owner and Mad Fight Club president. He is also the tournament's deputy head referee, assisting head referee Jiang Tao from China and Asia MMA. Tsan, who is also president of the Sarawak Mixed Martial Arts Association (SAMMA), said the tournament has drawn a diverse mix of clubs and teams, including Turkey MMA Gym, Panglima Seman Boxing Club, Malaysian Mixed Martial Arts Association, PS Boxing Bintulu, Fearless MMA Gym, Mad Fight Club, Joe Academy Boxing, Rebel Boxing Club, Airforce Firefighter, TSM Boxing Club, Warmonger Training Academy, Kota Samarahan Boxing Club, and Money Fattloy Team. Spectators are required to purchase an entrance ticket priced at RM15, which includes cash vouchers redeemable for food and drinks on-site. CHPS Mile 4 1/2 and Kuching High top wushu schools again

KUCHING (July 15): Chung Hua Mile 4 1/2 Primary School and SMK Kuching High lifted the primary school and secondary school titles respectively for the third consecutive year at the Kuching Division Wushu Championships on Sunday. The two-day competition held at Aeon Mall Kuching Central saw Chung Hua Mile 4 1/2 on top with 37 gold, 27 silver and nine bronze medals followed by Chung Hua Primary School No. 3 (16-7-10) and Chung Hua Sungai Lubak (13-4-6), Chung Hua Primary School No. 1 (11-18-39) and Chung Hua Primary School Stapok (8-12-4). The primary school champions earned more honours when Crystal Wee Yu Tang walked away with the Best Girl Athlete after she collected 24.818 points from winning golds in Girls Group B 1st International gunshu, daoshu and changquan. The Best Boy performer was Ethan Yap Tai Xen who collected 254.806 points after winning golds in Boys Group B 1st International qiangshu, jianshu and changquan. Sarawak among top three at National Junior Wushu Championships

KUCHING (June 11): Sarawak scored a major breakthrough at the recent 14th National Junior KBS-KPM-AG Asia Wushu Championships at Chin Woo Athletics Association Hall in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan. The 37-member team comprising 24 taolu (optional routine) and 13 sanda (free sparring) athletes captured 13 gold, 15 silver and 10 bronze medals plus eight consolation placings to finish third overall in the field of 15 teams. Wushu powerhouse Melaka topped the tournament with 22 golds, 17 silvers, 19 bronzes and three fourth placings while Kuala Lumpur were second with one gold more than Sarawak, 12 silvers, 13 bronzes and eight fourth placings. Sarawak sanda athletes bagged two gold medals through debutants Ar Rayyan Abdullah Hamizan in the Boys U17 75kg and Lima Jauku Youngley in the Boys U14 45kg. Star performers in the taolu events were Bryan Wee Hao Quan who won the golds in Boys Group C changquan and gunshu, and silver in daoshu, Crystal Wee Yu Tang in Girls Group C changquan and gunshu, and silver in daoshu and Ashly Ong Yee Ern in Girls Group C jianshu and qiangshu, and changquan. Team manager Jong Chin Fei described the performance as a huge breakthrough for the taolu and sanda teams. 'It was a vast improvement in the medal collection because last year we only managed seven golds. This year, we captured 13, thanks to two golds from sanda. 'In fact, our sanda team never won any gold medal in the previous KPM championships and that is certainly a positive improvement on our sanda development,' he told The Borneo Post. 'As for the taolu team, WFS Back-up Team is once again leading the team to a higher stage,' he said. Overall, John highlighted that the state has returned to the top three after a while. 'I am very proud and satisfied with the excellent results in KPM Championship this year, which led Sarawak back to top three teams after so many years. 'I believe that with a strong backup team, we are having more younger and talented Sukma athletes now,' he added.
