Is Rajinikanth and Mani Ratnam reunion on cards? Here's what Thug Life director has to say
Rajinikanth and director Mani Ratnam had previously collaborated on the iconic film Thalapathi, which was released in 1991. Now, the filmmaker has spilled the tea on this and whether fans can expect a reunion from them.
In an interaction with News18, the director said, 'I think you should ask Rajini sir. You should see… we never know. After Thug Life, I plan to take a break. I have four scripts in mind, but none of them are fully fleshed out yet. If nothing comes out of them, then that's the end of it.'
For those unaware, the superstar and visionary director had previously worked together in Thalapathi. The film was based on the Hindu epic Mahabharata and the friendship shared between Karna and Duryodhana. It portrays Surya, an orphan who dwells in the slums and is known for his benevolent nature.
After he scuffles with a goon, he gets acknowledged by a mighty gangster called Deva, and later they become friends. As things start to come under the joint guidance of Surya and Deva, things take a turn when a righteous district collector comes into play who also happens to be a kin of Surya.
The rest of the film focuses on how Surya attempts to reconnect with his roots and how his friendship with Deva develops amid these events. Aside from the superstar, the movie also had actors Mammootty and Arvind Swamy as co-leads.
Coming to Mani Ratnam 's upcoming venture, the director is slated to hit the big screen with a film starring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR, titled Thug Life. The gangster actioner tells the tale of Rangaraaya Sakthivel Naicker, an aging Yakuza-like gangster who has raised his foster son, Amaran, to take over his place in the mafia.
However, when Sakthivel is presumed dead, all suspicions lead to his adopted son. Now, with vengeance in mind, the former makes a return from his grave, eager to settle the scores for once and for all.
Apart from Haasan and STR, the film has Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, and more in key roles.
On the other hand, Rajinikanth will be hitting the big screens on August 14, 2025, with the Lokesh Kanagaraj directorial Coolie.

‘Thug Life' review: Cinematic panache to the rescue in the Battle of Man Buns
Mani Ratnam's Thug Life has an array of ruffians. The Tamil movie's biggest thug is arguably its director, who muscles his way through a slight storyline with trademark brio. In the gripping opening sequence, Amar loses his father and sister in quick succession during a gunfight. The orphaned Amar (Silambarasan TR) is raised by the gangster Sakthivel (Kamal Haasan). Sakthivel's operation includes his brother Manickam (Nassar) and the henchmen Pathros (Joju George) and Anburaj (Bagavathi Perumal). The green-eyed monster rears its head when Sakthivel anoints Amar as his heir, and runs hither and tither when Amar decides to bite the hand that has fed him. The older man's rival Sadanand (Mahesh Manjrekar) and police officer Jaikumar (Ashok Selvan) are among those trying to take advantage of what turns out to be the Battle of the Man Buns, magnificent specimens of which are sported by Aman and Sakthivel. Thug Life continues Ratnam's career-long preoccupation with the lingering effects of the early loss of innocence. The ghost of Nayakan (1987), in Ratnam directed Kamal Haasan, flits through Thug Life, daring the new film to match its poignancy. Thug Life, written by Ratnam and Haasan, also contains a smattering of Ratnam's Chekka Chivantha Vaanam (2018), about the gradual implosion of a family of criminals. There is a timeless, fable-like quality to Thug Life 's treatment of filial ties and Sakhtivel's back-from-the-brink hero. The movie's largely Delhi setting duly yields a line about the city's history of betrayal and fratricide. Sequences set in the snow are a pointer to the icicles that have formed in the hearts of characters, waiting to be wielded like knives. While the new film's plot is as old as the hills, the staging and treatment of character arcs have the ability to surprise, mesmerise even. Thug Life looks fresh, exciting and seductive – the classic Mani Ratnam trick to make even the routine appear like something you have never seen before. Rather than the addictive Jinguchaa, it's AR Rahman's Vinveli Nayaga that resonates. The track is used mostly in fragments and in its instrumental version throughout Thug Life, linking together an act of violence done to a boy with the backstabbing that becomes a part of his adulthood. Ravi K Chandran's cinematography is kinetic when required and lyrical when showcasing the numerous characters who populate the film's universe. The cast is littered with heavy-hitters and lightweights, some of whom are striking despite being on the screen for only a few minutes. Abhirami, Trisha, Joju George, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Vadivukkarasi make the most of their limited screen time. Others mark attendance simply because there is too much ground to be covered and not enough road for them. Why is Ali Fazal, or Rajshri Deshpande, in the film? Why does Mahesh Manjrekar's Sadanand drop out of view? Whatever is the deal about Sakhtivel and Manickam, brothers in life and crime? There's a smaller, sweeter story nestled within a protracted 165-minute run-time that is dominated by Anbariv's action set pieces after the interval. Sakhtivel's love for his wife Jeeva (Abhirami), which doesn't come in the way of his lust for his young mistress Indrani (Trisha); Amar's ambivalent feelings towards a paternalistic figure associated with his own father's loss; Amar's missing sister Chandra – this is Thug Life 's emotional core, which has to fight through layers of padding. Thug Life muddles the good-bad binary usually found in Ratnam's films, but ever so slightly. The movie sometimes has a Rajinikanth problem. Having cast a screen icon in the lead role, and despite controlling his tendency towards grandstanding, Thug Life is loath to acknowledging, or accepting, that Sakthivel can be a monster too. Kamal Haasan is a memorable lion in winter, dominating his scenes without overwhelming his co-actors. Kamal Haasan's fans from Bengaluru go to Hosur to watch 'Thug Life'
'Thug Life,' a and come back movie after nearly 4 decades hit the screens on Thursday, as several frenzied fans reportedly travelled from Bengaluru to watch the movie at nearby Hosur in Tamil Nadu. The craze among fans for the 'First Day First Show,' popularly known as FDFS resurfaced as swarms of fans descended on movie theatres. Several fans of Haasan discussed about Thug Life in social media, gave superb ratings to it and some also compared it with 'Nayakan,' (also a gangster drama) and speculated about box office collections. Mani Ratnam and Haasan are joining hands after Nayakan, which was released in 1987. In several places, huge images of the stars were decked with flowers and mega size garlands. Reportedly, several fans from Bengaluru city and suburbs went to Hosur, a distance of about 42 km, to watch the movie. Posts in some social media accounts and reportage in some Tamil news television channels claimed that fans gathered in Hosur to watch the flick. Haasan's recent remark suggesting that Kannada language was born out of Tamil led to a huge controversy and Karnataka leaders and the Film Chamber of the state demanded that the actor withdraw his statement and tender an apology. However, Haasan declined to apologise and opted against releasing the movie in Karnataka on June 5, when it was released worldwide. A fan, in a social media post said 'Maro Charitra' (a K Balachandar film, 1978) was continuously screened for 693 days in Bengaluru and till date it is an 'unbeaten' record. The Haasan-starrer Thug Life's main cast includes Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Abirami and Naasar and A R Rahman has composed the music. Raaj Kamal Films International in a social media post said: #ThugLifeRules. In Coimbatore, several fans of Haasan appeared in T-shirts embossed with "Mannippu Ketka Mudiyathu," (Will not apologise) and "We stand with Kamal Haasan," slogans in bright black against milk white background. The Tamil Nadu government allowed a special screening on Thursday. One show was special and four other shows were usual. Noted film director Ameer, who watched the movie in Madurai, claimed Haasan did not comment anything wrong about any language or underestimate any language adding the actor only mentioned that Kannada was part of the Dravidian family of languages.

Pooja Bhatt was ‘abusive' on the set of Dhokha, Muzammil Ibrahim says he was mistreated: ‘I used to have nightmares'
Muzammil Ibrahim made a name for himself as a supermodel before he decided to debut as an actor. He made his debut with the film Dhokha, which was produced by Mahesh Bhatt and directed by Pooja Bhatt. In an interview with Siddharth Kannan, Muzammil opened up about the extremely difficult time during the shoot when he was mistreated and disrespected by Pooja. Muzammil shared he had nightmares about going to work and did not expect this kind of behaviour at all. I was just a kid that time, around 20, and the way I was treated on that set I cannot even begin to say… it was so heinous. I was respectful, but I had expectations. But the way I was mistreated I had no expectations after that. She used to verbally abuse a lot.' Muzammil shared that he didn't do Raaz 2 after the experience on Dhokha. He added, 'I was so scared, I was nightmarish. I was a supermodel in India, respected in a very different way and the way I was treated there… Mahesh Bhatt saab saw what was happening and tried to tell her not to do that as well. But it escalated when Bhatt saab was not on set. I used to hear such stories on set where Pooja said that actors should be like dogs and should sit when told. I come from a small family and I was so scared, the articles that were written to sabotage me… I did not want to attach myself to that situation. I used to have nightmares and used to pray that I survive the whole day. I went through a lot of depression.' Pooja Bhatt's Dhokha opened to positive reviews, with Muzammil receieving particular praise. The film also starred Tulip Joshi, Anupam Kher and Gulshan Grover in pivotal roles.
