Omaha basketball player Deng Mayar drowns in a Utah reservoir
Herriman police said Mayar died at Blackridge Reservoir after going underwater about 35 yards from shore.
Mayar, 22, was a graduate student who joined the Mavericks after playing two seasons for Summit League rival North Dakota. Mayar, from Salt Lake City, started 15 games in two seasons and averaged 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds as a senior.
Omaha coach Chris Crutchfield said in a statement that Mayar had made 'tremendous progress' during the summer.
'Deng was a joy to be around and made our culture better,' Crutchfield said. 'We will miss him greatly.'
Herriman police responded to a 911 call reporting two people in distress at the reservoir. Sa Mafutaga, 21, made it to shore and then went back into the water to try to rescue Mayar. Bystanders entered the water to aid Mafutaga, who was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital. The report said Mafutaga is expected to recover.
Mayar's body was recovered from the reservoir by authorities after several hours of searching.

On his "Game Theory Podcast" recently, The Athletic's Sam Vecenie bandied about a possible trade with colleague Bryce Simon that could see Dallas adding some young playmaking and scoring in the backcourt. Vecenie and Simon proposed that the Mavericks offload athletic power forward P.J. Washington, now feeling the squeeze of a crowded and pricey frontcourt, to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for combo guard Jaden Ivey. The 6-foot-4 vet, still just 23, was en route to a career season in 2024-25 before breaking his fibula on January 1. Ivey's fit alongside All-NBA breakout point guard Cade Cunningham has long been questioned, and the Pistons seemed to thrive without him, finishing with a 44-38 record and pushing the New York Knicks to six games in a hard-fought first round series. Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic has been the epicenter of the NBA discussion this offseason. After a blockbuster midseason trade that brought Doncic to LA and sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks, the Slovenian phenom has been thrust into a much brighter spotlight. The Lakers have a notoriously intense fanbase that demands greatness from their players, so Doncic has had to adjust his habits quickly. He has reportedly lost a significant amount of weight this season, a sight many fans were excited to see as Doncic prepared to play for his country in the FIBA EuroBasket tournament. Unfortunately, Doncic got injured by his teammate in a freak accident Saturday morning and was forced to exit Slovenia's game against Latvia. If Doncic were to miss extended time due to injury, it would throw a major wrench in LA's plan to build around him. Luckily, Lakers insiders have already stated that the injury isn't believed to be serious, which is a sigh of relief for Laker nation. Much like the Mavericks, Los Angeles feels like they will always be in contention as long as Doncic is on the roster. Every move the team has made this summer has been tailored towards Doncic's needs and abilities, so losing him for any length of time would have been a disaster. There have been massive expectations placed on the five-time All-Star because of his body transformation. Doncic is taking a huge risk by competing in any games away from the Lakers, but it's just evident of the love he has for his country. Fellow managing editor Josh Bowe and I connected on Monday night to react to the Dallas Mavericks' schedule release. It's been a too-long summer and Josh and I have been scraping the bottom of the barrel. While we could've mentioned former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban going on yet another podcast, where he mentioned how Dallas almost traded for Kobe or the video of him dancing in the gym with some guys lifting… we decided to ignore those things. You're welcome. The schedule release for Dallas is really quite interesting. It's fun to consider games in February and March, but really, the opening of the season ends up being our focus. As Josh notes, it's when the team is at their most healthy and beyond that it becomes difficult to project for both Dallas and the rest of the league after the first 20 games.
