Massive proposed trade sees Mavericks add rising East star
The Dallas Mavericks could acquire a major Eastern Conference standout in a bold new trade proposal.
Dallas has gone through some bonkers roster turnover this year. Near the 2025 midseason trade deadline, the Mavericks shipped out five-time All-NBA First Team guard Luka Doncic — fresh off a 2024 NBA Finals appearance — plus big men Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for 10-time All-Star center/power forward Anthony Davis, 3-and-D swingman Max Christie, and a single first-round draft pick in 2029.
Both sides also sent 2025 second-rounders to the future draft pick-loving Utah Jazz so that L.A. could dump the contract of guard Jalen Hood-Schifino.
Dallas Could Reset Guard Timeline with New Deal
The Mavericks didn't stop there, however. When overextended nine-time All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving tore his ACL playing big minutes post-Doncic, and Davis suffered his annual ailment, Dallas fell out of contention and into the lottery.
Through sheer dumb lottery luck, the Mavericks stumbled into the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, which they used on blue-chip Duke prospect Cooper Flagg.

Now, 18-year-old Flagg is saddled with three pricey future Hall of Famers aged 32 or older in Irving, Davis and Klay Thompson. Davis and Irving remain All-Stars, when healthy, although Thompson is in a different stage of his career after a litany of injuries.
Could Dallas look to retool a roster mostly built around Doncic to better fit Flagg's timeline?
On his "Game Theory Podcast" recently, The Athletic's Sam Vecenie bandied about a possible trade with colleague Bryce Simon that could see Dallas adding some young playmaking and scoring in the backcourt.
Vecenie and Simon proposed that the Mavericks offload athletic power forward P.J. Washington, now feeling the squeeze of a crowded and pricey frontcourt, to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for combo guard Jaden Ivey. The 6-foot-4 vet, still just 23, was en route to a career season in 2024-25 before breaking his fibula on January 1.
Ivey's fit alongside All-NBA breakout point guard Cade Cunningham has long been questioned, and the Pistons seemed to thrive without him, finishing with a 44-38 record and pushing the New York Knicks to six games in a hard-fought first round series.
In 30 healthy games last year, Ivey averaged a career-most 17.6 points on .460/.409/.733 shooting splits, 4.1 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 0.9 steals a night.

Sean Strickland handed 6-month suspension for Las Vegas in-cage attack
Repercussions have been handed to Sean Strickland following his in-cage altercation with a regional fighter at a Tuff-N-Uff event in Las Vegas in June. In a hearing Thursday, the Nevada Athletic Commission agreed to a punishment of a six-month suspension and a $5,000 fine, plus legal fees. The suspension is retroactive to the incident date, which was June 29, meaning Strickland will be eligible to fight again on Dec. 29. Strickland can have the suspension reduced to four and a half months if he completes anger management classes. "Sean Strickland stepped forward. He made this process easy," NAC chairman Dallas Haun said. "He's apologized for his behavior. We appreciate someone stepping up, owning something, and for a resolution to be come to quickly and with all parties in agreement. So, again, thanks to Mr. Strickland. He's made a mistake and he's owned it and we appreciate that." The altercation occurred at the end of a middleweight bout between Luis Hernandez and Miles Hunsinger. After Hernandez submitted Strickland's teammate Hunsinger with a guillotine in Round 2, he began taunting Hunsinger's corner, which led to the former UFC middleweight champion storming the cage to throw punches at Hernandez. UFC welterweight Chris Curtis, Strickland and Hunsinger's teammate, also got involved in the skirmish and was fined $2,500 on Thursday. For the 34-year-old Strickland, this suspension effectively kills the rest of his 2025 fight career unless his suspension is reduced. He last fought in a losing effort when he rematched the now-former champion Dricus du Plessis in February. Strickland's last victory came via a split decision over Paulo Costa in June 2024.

Chicago Cubs increasing season ticket prices for 2026 by an average of 6%
The Chicago Cubs' return to contention in 2025 has made home games a hot ticket at Wrigley Field, and to no one's surprise, the team's success on the field means another sizable ticket price increase in 2026. Season tickets for Cubs games will go up from 5-8%, the team announced Thursday in its renewal letter to season ticket holders, with an average increase of 6%. Meanwhile, season ticket holders who renew through 2028 will be guaranteed tickets to the 2027 All-Star Game, Home Run Derby and all other All-Star events at Wrigley, with a maximum ticket increase of 3% in 2027 and 2028. Cale Vennum, senior vice president of Marquee Sports & Entertainment, said the All-Star Game is a 'once in a lifetime event' where demand will likely make it difficult to get in without the guarantee of a season ticket package. 'I would imagine there would be very, very limited tickets available on a single game basis,' he said. 'The demand for this game, we expect it to be through the roof.' Those who don't renew for the entire three years and prefer to go year-to-year might have access to the All-Star Game and events, Vennum said, but there aren't any guarantees. MLB controls most of the tickets for big events and Wrigley is one of the smaller venues. If the 2027 All-Star Game is postponed due to a labor stoppage, the game played on the North Side would likely be delayed until 2029, sources said. 'If for any reason the games need to be rescheduled for a later year, we would honor our commitment to the season ticket holders,' Vennum added. The Cubs already have among the priciest tickets in baseball and demand has surged this season with a team that spent nearly four months in first place until being passed by the Milwaukee Brewers. They began Thursday ranked sixth in average attendance at 37,479 per game. Bleacher tickets for 2026 will likely be around the highest range of the increase — about 8%. Chicago Cubs fans are 'really excited' for Wrigley Field's 2027 All-Star Game. But how much will tickets cost?'The bleachers have been sold out for almost every game this season,' Vennum said. 'It's certainly been the place to be.' A postseason ticket renewal means paying for tickets for all possible home games, with the option of refunds or a credit toward next year for any games not played. The deadline to place a deposit for postseason tickets is Sept. 17. The Cubs are still in good position for a wild-card spot with a 99% chance, according to If the Cubs finish as the top wild-card team, they would host all the first-round wild-card games in a best-of-three series. If they are the second or third wild-card team, they would play their first-round games on the road and have to hope to get to the best-of-five division series.

Dallas Baptist baseball program will become affiliate member of Pac-12 in 2027
DALLAS — Dallas Baptist's baseball program will join the Pac-12 as an affiliate member and begin play in the reconstructed conference in 2027, the school announced Thursday. DBU has won 40 games in 12 of the past 14 seasons and has played in the NCAA regionals in 14 of the past 17. The Patriots played four seasons in Conference USA and won regular-season championships in 2023 and 2025 and the league tournament in 2024. They played the previous nine seasons in the Missouri Valley Conference. 'This is yet another significant moment in the history of DBU athletics,' athletic director Matt Duce said. 'DBU baseball's legacy stretches back decades, shaped by the dedication of players and coaches who laid the foundation for today's success. Over the last two decades, coach (Dan) Heefner and the Patriots have carried that tradition to even greater heights, and joining the Pac-12 is the latest milestone in a storied history.' The Pac-12, which had 10 members disperse to other conferences in 2024, will reactivate next July. DBU will compete in baseball against Pac-12 holdovers Oregon State and Washington State and new members Fresno State, Gonzaga, San Diego State and Texas State. ___ AP college sports:
