Hawana 2025: MMC Act to strengthen media integrity, says MPI president
Speaking at the Hawana 2025 Forum today, Yong said the MMC Bill, passed by Parliament this year, culminated years of deliberation aimed at establishing a self-regulatory body to empower media practitioners while ensuring accountability.
"This Act is designed to safeguard journalistic integrity, promote fair reporting, and provide a structured mechanism for addressing public concerns about media practices," he said.
Also present were MPI chief executive officer Ainol Amriz Ismail, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 project director.
Yong expressed his appreciation to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching, as well as former minister Gobind Singh Deo, for their efforts in championing the Act.
He said the legislation aims to strengthen ethical standards and restore public trust in journalism while ensuring that professionals in the field have the autonomy to self-regulate.
On the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism, Yong acknowledged its potential in enhancing newsroom operations but cautioned against over-reliance on the technology.
"Yet, while AI presents exciting opportunities, it must be adopted judiciously.
"Journalism is not merely about data processing; it is about human judgment, investigative rigour and ethical responsibility," he said.
Yong stressed that AI should complement, not replace, journalists, and the challenge lies in integrating the technology responsibly to enhance the credibility and effectiveness of media without eroding core journalistic values.
The Hawana 2025 Forum, which took place at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL), discussed the topic "Malaysian Media Council: Regulator or Media Protector?", followed by a technology-sharing session titled "AI & Media: Tool, Threat or Opportunity?"
The forum, jointly organised by Bernama and MPI, also served as an important platform for the Pro tem Committee of the Malaysian Media Council (MMM) to voice their views on the direction of the industry after the approval of the MMC Bill 2024 in Parliament.
Themed "Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics", Hawana 2025 is the largest gathering of Malaysian media practitioners. It is organised by the Communications Ministry through Bernama as the implementing agency.

Basic Metals, Non-metallic Minerals And Wood Products Drive Foreign Investments In Sabah
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- The three main industries in Sabah that recorded the highest foreign investments over the past decade (2015 to 2024) in the manufacturing sector were basic metal products, non-metallic mineral products, and wood products, according to the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). For the state's services sector, the hotel and tourism sub-sectors, along with support services, were the main contributors. 'In terms of value, basic metal products recorded RM4.3 billion, followed by non-metallic mineral products at RM2.5 billion, and wood products at RM99.1 million. The hotel and tourism sector recorded RM205 million, and support services amounted to RM37.9 million,' the ministry said in a written reply published on the Dewan Rakyat portal today. The ministry was responding to a question from Datuk Jonathan Yasin (GRS-Ranau), who asked about the total foreign investment made in Sabah over the past 10 years and at present.

Malaysia Calls For Inclusivity As Standard In ASEAN Urban Governance
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- Malaysia has urged Southeast Asian countries to make inclusivity a standard in urban governance through the newly-launched ASEAN Urban Women for Resilience and Transformative Sustainable Actions (AURORA) initiative. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said even though women make up half of the 680 million people living in ASEAN's urban areas, yet their representation in decision-making bodies remains disproportionately low. "In some ASEAN local councils, women hold fewer than 20 per cent of seats. This imbalance affects the way cities prioritise issues such as safety in public spaces, access to childcare and the design of transport systems that meet the needs of families and the elderly. "AURORA addresses this by fostering a culture of leadership that is more inclusive and responsive. It brings together cities across ASEAN to strengthen women's participation in governance while improving the quality of urban policies and services for all residents," she said during her speech at the 'A Women-Led City Initiative In ASEAN AURORA: ASEAN Urban Women For Resilence And Transformative Sustainable Actions' forum held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here. The forum was attended by representatives from ASEAN member states, city leaders, civil society groups and regional partners. Zaliha also stressed that cities led with active female participation tend to adopt policies that are more responsive to residents' needs such as integrating community safety, social wellbeing and economic development. She added that Malaysia's own experience with gender-responsive planning across more than 83 local authorities had improved safety in public spaces, enhanced transport accessibility and ensured infrastructure meets the needs of all citizens, guided by feedback from women, seniors, persons with disabilities and caregivers. Under the AURORA initiative, ASEAN member cities are encouraged to adopt a voluntary framework that includes setting targets for women's representation in leadership roles, conducting regular safety assessments of public spaces, and improving public transport accessibility. Zaliha said such measures would help cities monitor progress, learn from one another and raise governance standards across the region.
