CM visits Puri to review Rath Yatra arrangements
Ahead of the Chief Minister's visit, Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan held a marathon discussion with the senior servitors and listened to their grievances, like restrictions on them to climb the chariots, housing issues and children's education.

'We had a detailed discussion with the Law minister on different issues. The servitors have apprised him of being hurt for not getting permission to climb chariots. The administration allows only on-duty servitors to the chariots. We have demanded that all should be allowed to climb the chariot to have 'darshan' of the deities,' leader of Khuntia servitors Hajari K C Khuntia told reporters.
Noting that the servitors have assured the Law minister that they will complete all rituals according to tradition, Khuntia said they are scheduled to meet the Chief Minister.
Accompanied by the Law Minister, Majhi is also scheduled to hold a meeting with the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) and others to ensure smooth conduct of upcoming events, according to an official. The Chief Minister aims to make the remaining part of the festival incident-free so that lakhs of devotees return home with a 'feel good experience'.
Following the stampede incident, the State government has transferred both the District Collector and the SP from Puri and suspended two senior police officers on charges of dereliction of duty. The government also appointed other experienced officers to handle the Rath Yatra affairs.
Meanwhile, Development Commissioner Anu Garg began the administrative inquiry into the stampede on Monday. She is mandated to submit the inquiry report within 30 days.

"We have full faith that the govt will give justice to our demands. After watching the attack video, most of the officers are shocked and not ready to join work unless the govt ensures their safety. Once the govt fulfils our demands, we will resume work," said Bijay Kumar Swain, secretary of the sssociation. Cops overhaul positioning, increase number of CCTV cameras on Grand Road
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Ahead of Bahuda Yatra and Suna Besha ceremonies in Puri, state police have reworked the positioning of AI-enabled CCTV cameras on the 3km Grand Road between Jagannath and Gundicha temples. The overhaul is part of the revised crowd control plan following the recent stampede outside Gundicha Temple that left three devotees dead, police sources said. "Supplementary artificial intelligence-powered surveillance cameras have been strategically implemented at additional locations, complementing the pre-existing monitoring infrastructure," said additional director general (ADG) Dayal Gangwar, who oversees operations at the integrated command and control centre (ICCC) for Rath Yatra. Sources said new Puri SP Pinak Mishra drafted an additional list of critical locations where camera presence is essential for effective surveillance on crowd density. While at least 70 cameras were already in place on the Grand Road, the number has now been increased to 110. Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation expeditiously installed the additional surveillance cameras on Wednesday. The corporation also conducted thorough inspections of existing cameras, recommending replacements for substandard units to maintain optimal surveillance capabilities. "Technical clarification regarding the quality of camera footage can only be provided by the designated service provider. We encountered certain operational challenges stemming from adverse weather conditions, compromised internet connectivity and power interruptions. Nevertheless, these impediments were expeditiously addressed," Gangwar told TOI. Responding to concerns regarding alleged poor functioning of the surveillance system, Gangwar said, "Our response mechanism consistently ensured immediate transmission of crowd density notifications to relevant police authorities for appropriate intervention whenever such alerts were generated through our surveillance network." During Tuesday's security assessment in Puri, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasised the paramount importance of real-time crowd density evaluation and swift operational response. The CM directed DGP Y B Khurania regarding the deployment of additional personnel, particularly those possessing specialised expertise in crowd management and traffic regulation protocols, during Sandhya Darshan (July 4), Bahuda Yatra (July 5), Suna Besha (July 6), and Niladri Bije (July 8) — all of which traditionally draw hundreds of thousands of devotees.

Govt returns Rs 47.07cr to over 1.27L duped chit fund investors
1 2 Bhubaneswar: The state govt has restituted Rs 47.07 crore to 1,27,137 duped chit fund investors in the last one year, chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi informed on Wednesday. In an indirect attack on the previous Naveen Patnaik govt, Majhi said only 2,79,109 victims had received refunds to the tune of Rs 119 crore during 2014-2024. "After the new govt assumed office in the state, under the direction of chief minister the process for refunding chit fund money has been simplified and decentralised to the district level. This has expedited the refund process, and in the past year, the state govt has returned Rs 47.07 crore to 1,26,137 small depositors," according to a statement from the chief minister's office (CMO). The CMO indicated that an additional 5 lakh small depositors would receive their refunds within 3 to 4 months. "For a decade from 2014 to 2024, only 2,79,109 small depositors had received a total refund of Rs 119 crore," the statement noted. Compensating chit fund victims was a crucial BJP electoral commitment last year. The BJP state president, Manmohan Samal, in Sept last year announced that the govt would reimburse defrauded chit fund victims within 18 months. The commission's interim report to the state govt recommended refund for 4,97,844 small investors while identifying over 450 companies responsible for the Ponzi fraud. Last Dec, Majhi revealed at an event here that he too was a victim of chit fund schemes, stating he couldn't recover his money due to the complicated recovery process.
