Microsoft unveils ROG Xbox Ally handheld video game devices
Microsoft on Sunday unveiled its first Xbox-branded handheld gaming devices, touting them as a way to play its vast library of titles anywhere.
Two "ROG Xbox Ally" models made in a partnership with Taiwan-based ASUS will be available by the year-end holiday season, Xbox president Sarah Bond said during an online event showcasing games heading for the platform.
"The Xbox Ally is an Xbox you can hold in your hands, bringing together the power of Xbox and the freedom of Windows," Bond said.
"On this Xbox, you can play games across your entire library, including all the Windows PC game stores from Xbox and Battle.net to Steam, GOG (Good Old Games platform) and Ubisoft Connect."
The peek at Xbox Ally came just days after the release of Nintendo's Switch 2, the handheld console that could score record early sales for the Japanese "Super Mario" creator.
The Nintendo device, which features a bigger screen and more processing power, is an upgrade to the Switch that became a global phenomenon with hit games such as "Animal Crossing."
Microsoft promised to disclose pricing and release date details for Xbox Ally in the coming months.
Both Xbox handhelds appeared similar to Microsoft console controllers in terms of buttons, toggles and grips but looked elongated to provide room for center screens.
"When you power on your Xbox Ally, you'll boot directly into the Xbox full screen experience, a new feature optimized specifically for handheld gaming," Microsoft said in a release.
"The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are perfect for players looking to take an approachable gaming experience with you during travels, whether it's between airports, or between the comfiest chairs in the living room."

Rapido cuts food delivery charges by half to counter Zomato, Swiggy
Ride-hailing app Rapido has finalised online food delivery partnership costs and terms with restaurants at nearly half the commissions from entrenched rivals Swiggy and Zomato , challenging the duopoly, people directly aware of the developments said. According to the agreed terms with industry body National Restaurants Association of India (NRAI), Rapido is expected to charge commissions in the range of 8-15% from restaurants, compared to 16-30% Zomato and Swiggy charge, the executives said. The partnership terms state Rapido will charge a fixed fee of Rs 25 on orders below Rs 400 and Rs 50 on orders over Rs 400, the people quoted earlier said. This translates to a range of 8-15% commissions from restaurants, compared to 16-30% charged by Zomato and Swiggy. Consumers will be able to place orders on the Rapido app where restaurants will be listed. "This will specially help small restaurants ," one of the executives mentioned above said. The pilot is expected to go live in June-end or first week of July, starting with Bengaluru . "We've been in discussion with Rapido over the last few months just the way we are working closely with ONDC. We are discussing a structure which is economically and democratically much more viable for restaurants to sustain," NRAI president Sagar Daryani said. He declined to comment on specific partner terms. "It's also very important for us to know our customers and the same has been candidly communicated to them," Daryani added. Allegations of data masking have been a core point of disagreement between restaurants and the large platforms. An email seeking comments from Rapido remained unanswered. The ride-hailing unicorn's bike-taxi riders currently have a select 'idle-time' arrangement with Swiggy to deliver food in select cities, but the arrangement is non-exclusive. The NRAI, which represents over 500,000 restaurants, had initiated a similar partnership with the government-backed ONDC in January, but the terms are still being ironed out amid slower traction. Recent months have seen multiple small restaurant owners calling out what they alleged are "steep charges" levied by Zomato and Swiggy. "Zomato is becoming unsustainable for small restaurant owners like us," Vandit Malik, founder, The Garlic Bread, wrote on Linkedin three weeks back. "To even be visible on the platform, I'm forced to spend Rs 30+ per order on ads. What's left? Pennies. Sometimes, not even that," he alleged. The owners of another NCR-based small restaurant, Saffroma, wrote on X last week, which went viral, that it was quitting Zomato alleging "zero payouts, mystery service charges and advertisements initiated without approval." The post has since been deleted.

Microsoft has introduced two new handheld gaming PCs, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X, at the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday. These devices mark Microsoft's first Xbox-branded handhelds, developed in partnership with Asus. In a world rapidly reshaped by artificial intelligence, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella believes that one skill remains irreplaceable — strong fundamentals. In a recent interview with tech YouTuber Sajjaad Khade, Nadella emphasized that despite AI's increasing role in software development, it still depends heavily on the developer's ability to think logically and design systems effectively. 'Just getting real fundamentals of software (if you're a software engineer), I think, matters a lot,' Nadella stated. 'To me, having the ability to think computationally (is important).' Nadella was responding to a question from Khade on what single piece of advice he would give to those starting a tech career in today's AI-dominated landscape. He underlined the importance of learning to structure problems and think like a software architect — roles that AI can assist with, but not replace. "The path to being that software architect gets speeded up," Nadella noted. "All of us are going to be more software architects." Illustrating his point with a personal story, Nadella recounted an experience using GitHub Copilot — Microsoft's AI-powered coding assistant — to solve a tricky bug in his own code. He was developing a feature that used a percentile filter and realized he needed to recall SQL concepts to resolve the issue effectively. "Except I was thinking about it, it was a pretty cool issue, right? The issue was I did a filter, which was basically a percentile... creating a feature. But then I said, 'Oh man, this is, like, you know, I could, you know, recount what is a SQL, right?'" This, he explained, is the future of software development — a collaborative relationship between human intuition and AI automation. While AI handles repetitive and mechanical parts of coding, humans must still guide the design, structure, and purpose of software systems. Nadella also revealed that AI already writes a large share of Microsoft's code. 'I'd say maybe 20 per cent, 30 percent of the code that is inside of our repos today and some of our projects are probably all written by software,' he said during a previous conversation with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Beyond product development, Nadella has committed to preparing the next generation for this evolving reality. At Microsoft Build, he spoke about 'agentic AI,' a concept redefining the technology stack and unlocking new developer opportunities. In line with that vision, Microsoft has launched a major initiative in India aimed at training 500,000 students, educators, developers, and entrepreneurs by 2026. Partnering with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the initiative includes the creation of an AI Centre of Excellence called 'AI Catalysts' and the establishment of 20 AI productivity labs in National Skill Training Institutes and NIELIT centres across ten Indian states. The goal: train 20,000 educators and foster a community of 100,000 AI developers, especially in rural and underrepresented areas. Nadella's message is clear — AI is transforming how we build software, but human creativity, logic, and a strong grasp of the basics are what will continue to set successful developers apart.
