
India's most dangerous roads: Delhi, Haryana stretches of NH-44 top killers; 2,300+ lives lost on national highways in 2023
While 715 lives were lost on the 266-km section of the highway in Haryana, which translates into three fatalities per km, the 30-km Delhi portion recorded 63 deaths, or almost two deaths a km.
Officials of road transport ministry and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said 100 highway stretches in the country had been ranked by SaveLife Foundation, which has signed an MoU with the ministry.
"The organisation has used govt data, including the new Integrated Road Accident Database, to arrive at the findings.
After carrying out detailed analysis, corrective measures are being taken to reduce the number of accidents," said an NHAI official.
Among the three road sections in Delhi that are a part of NH-44 (3,745 km in length) are the Mukarba Chowk-Sanghu Border and Ashram-Badarpur Border stretches. These have been found to be highly accident-prone.
The Haryana section (85 km) of NH-48 from Gurgaon to Rajasthan border was the third most unsafe highway in 2023, recording at least two deaths per km.
Officials and road safety experts explained that the number of fatal crashes is high on highway stretches passing through major cities and urban areas given the presence of different kinds of vehicles and users. "We have not created enough facilities for safe passage of pedestrians and cyclists on highways passing through cities. After the problematic areas are flagged, we will be taking remedial action," said an official.
Sources said NHAI is using the updated data on crashes on NH stretches to ask highway builders and operators to take corrective measures.
The govt has also identified 100 districts reporting high numbers of road crashes and rolled out 'Data Driven Hyperlocal Intervention (DDHI)' to check crashes and fatalities. The districts are spread across 18 states - the highest number (19) is in Maharashtra, followed by 18 in Uttar Pradesh and 11 in Karnataka - based on integrated road accident data collected since 2021.

Flaws in design, implementation led to collapse of reinforced earth walls of NH 66 in Kerala: expert panel
The deficiencies in design, implementation, and quality assurance resulted in the collapse of reinforced earth (RE) walls that were constructed as part of the national highway (NH) 66 in Kerala, an investigation has concluded. The four-member expert panel appointed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) concluded that 'there was a noticeable lack of consistent monitoring, third-party quality checks, and post-construction verification such as confirmatory boreholes, pull-out testing of reinforcements, and performance audits, as mandated in standard codes. This has resulted in premature failures, subsidence, and visible distress in multiple RE wall segments and cut slopes across the alignment.' The RE walls had caved in, and cracks appeared in many stretches of the road, giving rise to safety concerns and traffic snarls. Kerala witnessed widespread public protests following the damage caused to the NH. The report concluded that the RE walls 'have either been constructed or are currently under construction without implementing ground improvement measures or partial replacement of the subsoil with reinforced fill or partial replacement of the subsoil with reinforced fill and geosynthetic reinforcement as basal reinforcement. In many locations, the groundwater table is at ground level,' according to the report submitted to NHAI a few days ago. 'It is crucial to implement ground improvement measures, or there may be potential settlement issues in the future. Therefore, monitoring the RE wall is essential to evaluate the total settlement of the structure,' the report pointed out. The 'systematic absence of geological input in the planning and execution of the highway alignment and associated structures, particularly in zones comprising lateritic terrain, weathered rock, paleo-river valleys, backwater/tidal flats, and high cut slopes particularly in reaches built over paleo-fluvial deposits, tidal flats, and active backwater zones attributed to lack of consideration of geological complexities,' it pointed out. Though the NHAI and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) had entered into a memorandum of understanding on Jan 31, 2024 for 'technical collaboration for geotechnical, geological, and landslide risk-related support, it has been noted with concern that the services and expertise of GSI have not been utilised in the planning, DPR preparation, or construction stages of NH 66,' the report said. The panel has suggested to 'mandatorily engage geosciences experts or specialised agencies like GSI in all the highway projects' since the 'failure of highway slopes and associated infrastructure, particularly in hill and mountainous areas, is mostly dictated by the inherent geological complexities.' 'Geosciences experts or specialised agencies like GSI shall be engaged during project inception for route alignment feasibility, at the detailed project report stage for geological mapping, terrain classification, and slope-risk zoning, in the pre-construction phase for site-specific investigation, foundation validation, and material characterisation and during the construction phase for on-ground monitoring, slope remediation design, and dynamic advisory support,' prescribed the committee. The panel suggested 'immediate geological consultation and slope risk re-evaluation' for vulnerable and failure-prone stretches for the ongoing and future works under NH-66.'

NHAI to remove temporary bunds along Cooum river before Oct. 10 to ensure free flow of water
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will remove from the Cooum river, a total of 238 temporary bunds used in the construction of the 20-km-long double decker elevated corridor linking Chennai Port and Maduravoyal. The work will be done before October 10. NHAI sources said this was to ensure the free flow of water in the river during the Northeast Monsoon. Last year, the contractor had removed such temporary bunds from 89 points. 'We will remove the bunds in phases, starting September 10. These are temporary platforms required to move machinery and material, since the river bed is soft and slushy. We have instructed the contractor to ensure that the work is carried out in time,' a source said. At a meeting chaired by the Deputy Chief Minister Udhayaidhi Stalin on Tuesday, the NHAI said each bund, around 10 m long, would comprise around four lorries worth of earth. Last year, the Southern bench of the National Green Tribunal had taken suo moto cognisance of the bunds, and directed the Water Resources Department and the NHAI to monitor the flow of water in the river. Pillar-related construction cannot be carried out when the bunds are removed, shifting the focus of the work to the Koyambedu-Maduravoyal stretch, where 115 of the 125 pillars are being retrofitted. 'We will reinforce the pillars by adding another layer, and combine it with the extension to help carry the load of another corridor on top. The old pillar and the new layer would be connected. The pillars have been tested for their strength,' another official said.

Kar sewa group repairs Anandpur Sahib roads in Punjab after government inaction.
Ropar: A volunteer group in Punjab has taken over road repairs in a historic Sikh pilgrimage town, highlighting growing frustration with govt inaction on crumbling infrastructure. Kar Sewa Qila Anandgarh Sahib, a religious service organisation, has begun repairing the deteriorating Agampur bridge and an adjoining smaller bridge in Anandpur Sahib, using its own funds after repeated pleas to authorities went unanswered. The town, home to the Takht Kesgarh Sahib — one of Sikhism's five temporal thrones — attracts large numbers of pilgrims, especially during the Holla Mohalla festival. Yet its roads have been left in a dangerous state, critics say. In a widely circulated video showing pothole-ridden stretches of the Anandpur Sahib–Mehatpur road, Nangal municipal council spokesperson Paramjit Singh Pamma asked: "What is the role of the govt if NGOs have to build and repair roads?" Kar Sewa sewadar Dharampal Singh said the Agampur bridge, which leads to the pilgrimage site of Naina Devi, had become hazardous. Govt officials have offered delayed assurances. Ropar executive engineer (B&R) S S Bhullar said a proposal worth ₹6.5 crore had been sent to higher authorities for repairs to both bridges. "The damaged piers will also be addressed," he said. Meanwhile, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) executive engineer Sandeep Kumar said the central govt had sanctioned ₹2 crore on July 16 for repairs to the Anandpur Sahib-Mehatpur road, though final approval from Patiala was pending. A proposal to four-lane the Anandpur Sahib-Nangal road has also been submitted. Kumar noted, however, that the Agampur bridge was outside NHAI's jurisdiction. Following the cancellation of the Anandpur Sahib-Mehatpur toll agreement in March 2023, the road fell under the NHAI control. But with official funds still tied up in red tape, it is volunteers — not the state — keeping the town's arteries open.
