Apple's MacBook gets a cheaper new rival, and it's not powered by Windows 11
The Chromebook is back and it promises more power at a very cheap price.
Can't afford a MacBook and hate Windows 11? Google hopes that an all-new Chromebook might convince you to try something totally new. This latest model - called the Chromebook Plus 14 - has been created by the team at Lenovo and now features a MediaTek Kompanio Ultra processor which makes this one of the most powerful Chrome laptops ever made.
Thanks to its ARM architecture, this chip is also super efficient with owners getting around 17 hours of battery life before needing to find a plug. There's a pin-sharp 14-inch OLED screen, quad speakers with Dolby Atmos, plenty of ports and a backlit keyboard for working when the lights get low. It even features a fan-free design to keep things silent under pressure, and there's the latest Wi-Fi 7 technology for faster access to the web.
Of course, this is a Chromebook, so it comes packed with smart features that are powered by Google.
There's instant photo editing, quick web searches via Google Lens, image creation tools and the ability to simplify long text via a function called Help me read.
Because it's a Chromebook, there's also full access to all of Google's apps, including Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Google Photos plus there are millions of extra Android apps available via the Play Store.
So, how much will it cost? The entry-level model starts from £599. That price rises if you add more RAM and storage.
'Our society has embraced the freedom of hybrid and remote work, but that freedom demands the workforce and their devices to be productive regardless of location and to do more in less time,' said Benny Zhang, Executive Director and General Manager of Chromebooks in Lenovo's Intelligent Devices Group.
'The Lenovo Chromebook Plus (14', 10) delivers the most powerful AI capabilities ever on a Chromebook. Whether you are an executive needing AI performance through the day, an artist wishing to create outside the studio, or an everyday user looking to browse, learn or play, this premium device is your perfect everyday companion.'

SHOCKING Google Pixel 10 Pro XL Design Leaks Just Dropped!
The Google Pixel 10 Pro XL is set to redefine expectations with a combination of subtle design enhancements and meaningful functional upgrades. While its exterior retains the recognizable Pixel aesthetic, the internal improvements aim to deliver a more seamless and efficient user experience. These refinements, alongside the broader Pixel 10 series lineup, underscore Google's commitment to thoughtful, incremental innovation that prioritizes practicality and performance. The video below from Demon's Tech gives us more details about the design changes. Watch this video on YouTube. Biometric Security: Faster, Smarter Authentication The Pixel 10 Pro XL introduces a innovative ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, marking a significant advancement in biometric security. Unlike traditional optical scanners, this next-generation technology employs ultrasonic waves to create a highly detailed fingerprint map. This innovation ensures faster and more accurate authentication, even in challenging conditions such as wet or sweaty hands. By addressing a common frustration among users of earlier Pixel models, Google has taken a decisive step toward improving everyday usability. In addition to the fingerprint scanner, the device retains its face unlock feature, providing users with a convenient alternative for quick access. While it lacks the advanced 3D facial mapping capabilities of Apple's Face ID, it remains a reliable and practical option for everyday use in well-lit environments. Together, these biometric features offer a versatile and secure authentication experience. Design Tweaks: Balancing Form and Function Google has implemented subtle yet impactful design adjustments to the Pixel 10 Pro XL, striking a balance between aesthetics and functionality. The iconic camera bar, a signature feature of the Pixel series, has been slightly enlarged. While this change may render older cases incompatible, it allows for the integration of upgraded camera hardware, potentially enhancing image quality and performance. Internally, the device's layout has been reconfigured to optimize space and functionality. One notable change is the relocation of the SIM tray to the top of the device, reflecting Google's efforts to streamline internal hardware. Additionally, the dual speaker system now features redesigned cutouts at the bottom, promising a richer and more immersive audio experience. These design tweaks demonstrate Google's focus on refining the user experience without compromising the device's signature look. 5G Antenna Redesign: Boosting Connectivity Connectivity remains a critical focus for the Pixel 10 Pro XL, as evidenced by significant changes to its 5G antenna design. Leaked case renders suggest that the new layout partially overlaps with the antenna placement of the Pixel 9 Pro. This adjustment likely aims to enhance signal reception and overall network performance, making sure a more reliable 5G experience for users. As the demand for faster and more stable connectivity continues to grow, these improvements position the Pixel 10 Pro XL as a competitive option in the 5G-enabled smartphone market. Whether streaming high-definition content, engaging in video calls, or gaming online, users can expect a smoother and more consistent connection. Expanding the Pixel Ecosystem The Pixel 10 Pro XL is part of a diverse lineup that includes the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. This range caters to a variety of user preferences, from traditional smartphone designs to innovative foldable options. By offering a broader selection, Google aims to appeal to a wider audience, making sure that there is a Pixel device for every type of user. With an official announcement expected on August 20th, 2025, more details about the series' features, pricing, and availability are anticipated. This expanded ecosystem reflects Google's ambition to solidify its position in the competitive smartphone market while addressing the evolving needs of its user base. Refinement Over Revolution The Google Pixel 10 Pro XL exemplifies a strategy of refinement rather than radical change. From its enhanced ultrasonic fingerprint scanner to its redesigned internal layout, every update is carefully calibrated to improve usability and performance. These thoughtful enhancements highlight Google's focus on delivering a consistent and reliable user experience, rather than relying on flashy overhauls. As the Pixel 10 series prepares for its debut, the Pixel 10 Pro XL stands out as a testament to Google's dedication to practical innovation. By prioritizing meaningful upgrades over superficial changes, the company continues to build on its reputation for creating devices that seamlessly integrate into users' lives. This approach ensures that the Pixel 10 Pro XL is not just a smartphone but a tool designed to enhance everyday experiences.
