Kurtz homers in 9th inning for second straight day to lift Athletics over Astros 3-1
SACRAMENTO — Nick Kurtz homered in the ninth inning for the second straight day and the Athletics beat the Houston Astros 3-1 on Monday night.
Brent Rooker drew a leadoff walk against Bryan Abreu (1-3) to open the ninth and reach safely in 12 straight home games. Kurtz followed with his seventh home run of the season 447 feet over the right-field wall.
Kurtz also hit a ninth-inning homer on Sunday to rally the Athletics to a 3-2 win and a three-game sweep at Kansas City.
The Athletics have won four straight games and are now 7-4 over the last 11 after losing 20 of the previous 21.
The Astros had a five-game winning streak snapped after entering winners in 16 of their last 22.
Athletics reliever J.T. Ginn struck out the side in the eighth and Mason Miller (1-2) added two strikeouts in the ninth. Starter Mitch Spence allowed seven hits and one earned run in five innings.
Third baseman Max Muncy made a nice defensive play to end the fifth when he made a backhand stab of a grounder and sent a jump throw from foul territory to get a hustling Jose Altuve at first base.
Houston rookie Ryan Gusto struck out a season-high eight and only allowed one earned run in five innings. He started in place of RHP Lance McCullers Jr., who was placed on the IL.
Altuve homered in the first and JJ Bleday went deep to tie the score 1-1 for the Athletics in the fifth.
Key moment
The Athletics appeared to have runners on second and third with two outs in the eighth following Tyler Soderstrom's hit. However, an official review showed Jeremy Peña tagged Soderstrom when he came off the bag.
Key stat
Abreu had a string of 16 straight scoreless outings come to an end. Abreu has only allowed runs in three of his 32 appearances.
Up next
Athletics LHP JP Sears (5-5, 5.08) is scheduled to start on Tuesday. The Astros have not named a starter.

Clemson players, prospects who are participating in the 2025 MLB draft combine
Clemson players, prospects who are participating in the 2025 MLB draft combine The MLB Draft Combine kicks off Tuesday at noon (EDT) in Phoenix, and Clemson will once again have a presence at the event. Per Baseball America, outfielder Cam Cannarella, standout transfer Ryan Wideman, and incoming signees Dax Kilby (SS) and Nick Frusco (LHP) are among the attendees. Cannarella and Kilby have both drawn Day 1 draft projections, with currently projecting Cannarella to go No. 38 overall to the Mets. Cannarella is the highest-ranked among the four, coming in at No. 39 on prospect list. Kilby follows at No. 79, Wideman at 155, and Frusco is currently unranked. Wideman, a Clemson legacy, recently transferred from Western Kentucky and joins Cannarella in earning All-American recognition for the 2024 season. calls Kilby 'one of the more polished high school bats' with second-round potential if he's signable. Cannarella is praised for his elite bat-to-ball skills, though there are questions about his power and swing discipline. Wideman is described as a highly athletic, toolsy outfielder, but scouts have concerns about his approach and contact quality. Last year, three Clemson-affiliated players attended the combine—two (Will Taylor and Austin Gordon) were drafted, while two signees enrolled at Clemson. The MLB Draft Combine includes medical evaluations, interviews with club executives, and media opportunities. MLB Network will begin live coverage at noon Tuesday. This year's MLB Draft is scheduled for July 13–14 during All-Star Week in Atlanta. How Bears' Cole Kmet is helping rookie Colston Loveland
Chicago Bears rookie tight end Colston Loveland has been waiting to get back on the football field after shoulder surgery back in January. But he's remained involved in meeting rooms and as an observer, where he's already leaning on his veteran teammates. That includes tight end Cole Kmet, entering his sixth season with Chicago, who has served as a sounding board and mentor for the Bears' top rookie throughout the offseason program. Advertisement "All the tight ends have been super helpful, but Cole, that's a vet right there," Loveland said. "[He] does everything the right way. Really good at football; really good mentally, really good physically. He's a great guy to look up to, and he's been very [helpful] … If I run a route or do something, he'll tell me some things, how he sees it, some coverage things, or whatever it may be. He's been super helpful and I'm very appreciative." Kmet previously discussed his approach to mentoring Loveland, where he reflected back on his time as a rookie with Jimmy Graham in that leadership role, as well as sharing his experiences with Loveland. Head coach Ben Johnson has sang Loveland's praises for how he's managed to stay involved from a mental standpoint as he remains unable to get on the field with the rest of the team. Loveland has spent the offseason immersing himself in the playbook as he aims to build those mental reps. The good news is Loveland is expected to be ready for training camp next month, and the team will finally get a glimpse at what Loveland and Kmet can do as a dynamic 1-2 punch on offense.
