Govt rules out GEG revival, tightens youth smoking controls, Parliament told
The Health Ministry said in a parliamentary written reply that it is instead focusing on strict regulatory measures to curb smoking among youths.
The ministry said the sale and use of smoking products among minors are already prohibited under Sections 13 and 17 of the Smoking Products Control for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852).
"The Generational Endgame policy is not being implemented for now," it added.
The ministry noted that its current strategy involves stringent regulatory measures under the same Act.
"These include mandatory product registration, bans on advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products, sales control, and smoking prohibitions in designated non-smoking areas.
"Our priority is to protect young people from the dangers of smoking by enforcing these regulations," it said.
Datuk Ahmad Saad @ Yahaya (PN-Pokok Sena) had asked about the ministry's consideration for reinstating the GEG policy.
The policy, which was halted, aimed to create a smoke-free generation by prohibiting the sale and use of tobacco and smoking products (including e-cigarettes and vapes) to individuals born on or after Jan 1, 2007.
This policy was a key component of the Control of Tobacco Products and Smoking Bill 2022.
The GEG provisions were later removed before the Bill was passed by the Dewan Rakyat .

Attorney-General, Public Prosecutor Split Set For Cabinet Review
The proposed separation of the roles of Attorney-General and Public Prosecutor will be submitted to the Cabinet at the end of this month, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced in the Dewan Rakyat today. 'This separation has long been requested, and the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) will present it to the Cabinet at the end of this month, so the progress is encouraging,' he said during the Ministerial Questions session. 'These are achievements in our administration that have yet to be matched by previous governments, including the one led by the honourable member (Datuk Rosol) previously,' he added. The Prime Minister was responding to a question from Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN–Hulu Terengganu) on which outdated laws would be amended or repealed to align with MADANI's reform principles and the timeline for implementation. Since taking office, the government has enacted 23 legal reforms, including two constitutional amendments related to citizenship and the Parliamentary Services Act 2025. Among other reforms, the administration has amended the Evidence (Child Witnesses) Act, enacted the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023, repealed the Mandatory Death Penalty Act 2023, and introduced the Ombudsman Bill 2025 and the Cybercrime Bill 2025. Anwar provided a breakdown of legislative activity: in 2023, five new laws and 34 amendments were enacted; in 2024, five new laws and 57 amendments; and in 2025 so far, four new laws, six amendments, two new bills, and 11 amended bills. On the topic of anti-party-hopping legislation, the Prime Minister said he had no objection to proposals to strengthen the law. He recalled submitting recommendations on the matter while serving as Opposition Leader, which were not implemented under the Constitutional (Amendment) (No. 3) 2022, prohibiting Members of Parliament from switching parties. 'Even if there are new proposals, that is fine. But let us not forget that it was previously opposed by those on the other side (now the opposition),' Anwar remarked in response to a follow-up from Rosol.

AGC: Pardon fully restored Anwar's eligibility as MP, PM
PETALING JAYA: The Attorney General's Chambers has rejected claims in a lawsuit that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should have been disqualified from serving as an MP and as Prime Minister. It said that a royal pardon in 2018 fully restored Anwar's eligibility to serve. In a statement Thursday (Aug 10), the AGC said the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong had granted Anwar a full pardon, reinstating his legal status "as a person who has never committed any offence". This meant that there was no basis for disqualification under Article 48(1)(e) of the Federal Constitution, it added. The AGC issued the statement following a suit filed by lawyer and former minister P. Waytha Moorthy, who is seeking to nullify Anwar's election as Tambun MP on Nov 19, 2022, and his appointment as the 10th Prime Minister five days later. Waytha argued that the pardon did not expressly exempt Anwar from the constitutional five-year ban on contesting elections after a prison release. He claimed that without such an exemption, Anwar should have been barred from standing in the 15th General Election. Citing the 2023 Court of Appeal's decision in Anwar Ibrahim v Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz, the AGC said that the King held the constitutional authority to pardon both the conviction and the sentence. "Therefore, there is no question of Datuk Seri Anwar being disqualified as a member of the Dewan Rakyat or as prime minister," it said. The AGC further said that any challenge to an MP's election must be made through an election petition under Article 118 of the Federal Constitution and within the time frame stipulated in Section 38 of the Election Offences Act 1954.
