Chennai: A special court in Chennai has directed health minister Ma Subramanian and his wife Kanchana to appear in person on May 23 in connection with a land grab case .After Madras high court dismissed Ma Subramanian's petition to quash the case last week, the special court directed the couple to appear for framing of charges. When the matter was taken up on Monday, they were absent. Counsel for Subramanian and his wife sought a adjournment saying an appeal was pending before the Supreme Court.Rejecting the request, special judge G Prabhakaran adjourned the matter to May 23. He warned that if the couple failed to appear without obtaining a stay from the Supreme Court, charges would be framed in their absence. The case relates to a SIDCO-owned plot in Kotturpuram originally allotted to S K Kannan. It is alleged that Ma Subramanian, during his tenure as Chennai Mayor, misused his official position to transfer the land to his wife's name using fraudulent documents. A complaint by a Saidapet resident, Parthiban, led to a CB-CID probe and the filing of a chargesheet in 2019 under forgery, cheating, criminal conspiracy, and Prevention of Corruption Act provisions. The case is pending before the special court handling cases against MPs and MLAs.

Is a pen drive at centre of SMC-CID clash?

Ahmedabad: The dust may just be beginning to settle over the clash between two Gujarat police units, State Monitoring Cell (SMC) and CID (Crime), last week. In the meantime, new details emerged, suggesting that a pen drive could be at the centre of the flashpoint between the two units. According to sources, two relatively junior officers walked into the office of CID (Crime) chief Parikshita Rathod — a DIG-rank officer from the state police service — and questioned her about pending applications with the department. Alongside those inquiries, the two junior officers reportedly asked about a pen drive linked to a project in Gandhinagar. The pen drive had reportedly been in CID custody long before Rathod assumed her post, and she is said to have denied any knowledge of it. "It is obvious that the contents of the pen drive hold immense value to some officers," said a source close to the development. It is learnt that top bosses in the state govt are upset and seek to get to the bottom of the entire episode. On Monday, minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi held a meeting with all the cops involved in the operation, seeking an account of what transpired during last week. Sources say this is not the first time details were sought from the CID (Crime) office. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo While Rathod was on leave last week, a police team from a different department reportedly approached her office to seek details about some pending inquiries. Neither DGP Vikas Sahay nor SMC DIG Nirlipt Rai responded to queries regarding the incident. For the uninitiated, the matter traces back to a complaint filed by a Vadodara-based businessman over a Rs 15 crore fraud involving a foreign company. Dissatisfied with CID's response, he is believed to have sought help from a 2013-batch IPS officer, who informed DIG Rai, leading to the SMC's intervention. The confrontation peaked when two SMC constables questioned Rathod and a fellow officer in her office. Following objections from CID officials, the constables were asked to leave. The internal discord prompted emergency meetings and the suspension of a police sub-inspector.

Supreme Court Refuses To Reduce Lawyer's Sentence For Abusing Woman Judge, Says...

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today rejected a petition by a lawyer convicted of abusing a woman judicial officer in a court in Delhi. The top court refused to reduce the imprisonment sentence to 6 months and said, "Today, the majority of our officers in Delhi are women. They will not be able to function if somebody can get away like this. Think of their state," the bench commented orally. The bench of Justice PK Mishra and Justice Manmohan was hearing a plea against the order of the Delhi High Court, which upheld the conviction of a lawyer who used abusive language towards a woman judge in a challan matter inside the trial court. The lawyer used abusive, vulgar expletives after the judge had adjourned the matter. While hearing the plea, Justice Manmohan verbally remarked, "Just see the inspection report, the language used, we cannot even say in the open court". Justice Manmohan further said that if a stern view is not taken against such behaviour, women judicial officers would not be ensured a safe work environment. "Today, the majority of our officers in Delhi are women. They will not be able to function like this- if somebody can get away like this. Think of their state," the bench said. The lawyer, Sanjay Rathore, was convicted by the trial court and sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment for the offence under Section 509 (intending to outrage modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code, 3 months under Section 189 (injury to public servant), and an additional three months under Section 353 (assault or criminal force against public servant to deter them from their duty). The trial court directed that the sentences would run consecutively, resulting in a total sentence of two years. Later, the High Court said that the sentence would run concurrently and not consecutively, reducing his sentence to 18 months from two years The counsel for the petitioner urged the Supreme Court bench to reduce his term of imprisonment to six months. He stressed several "mitigating factors" for this consideration, like his ageing parents and young children. He informed that the Bar Council has also acted against the lawyer.
