As Hurricanes prepare for 2025 season, look for offensive line to ‘set the tone'
'The O-line, we like to set the tone for the whole team,' Mauigoa said last week at the Atlantic Coast Conference's Football Kickoff in Charlotte, North Carolina. 'We like to set the standard. [Offensive line] coach [Alex] Mirabal always pounds on us every day to set the standard for the team, and we're the type of guys that go out there and try to dominate everybody.'
That's the standard that has to be set if Miami wants to build on its 10-win season in 2024, the first time UM has won double-digit games since 2017.
Coach Mario Cristobal always harps that the game begins in the trenches, and the Hurricanes have done their part through recruiting and development to make sure that their offensive line is among the best in the country.
That should be the case this season.
In addition to Mauigoa at right tackle, the Hurricanes return three other starters from last season in left tackle Markel Bell (who filled in early when Jalen Rivers was hurt and continued getting playing time when Rivers returned), left guard Matt McCoy and right guard Anez Cooper. Miami also added veteran center James Brockermeyer through the transfer portal.
Combined, the Hurricanes' projected starting offensive line has a combined 85 starts.
'Any time you have an offensive line that can perform at a high level, you're going to have a chance to win a lot of games,' Cristobal said, 'and we feel like we are going to be able to field an offensive line that could play eight to 10 guys, and maybe even more, of winning football. We're going to find out during camp. We cross train everybody so everybody's getting reps on the other side as well. We have multiple guys taking reps at center, but we're big and we're physical. Our strength room numbers have been off the charts. It's a hungry, driven group and they know that we are led by the trenches.'
And inside that group, Mauigoa is expected to lead the charge individually. The right tackle has been named a preseason All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation (first team), Athlon (first team), Lindy's Sports (second team) and Phil Steele (third team).
According to Pro Football Focus, Mauigoa was the only tackle at the Football Bowl Subdivision level last season with two or fewer knockdowns allowed on 500-plus pass-blocking snaps. He made all-around strides in his game, allowing just one sack last year compared to five as a freshman and allowing fewer quarterback pressures (19 in 2024 compared to 23 in 2023). Mauigoa also committed just five penalties in 2024 compared to nine his freshman season.
'We strive to get better every year,' Mauigoa said. 'Every offseason, we work to get better at something. We practice hard every time that we get a chance to. We're just trying to be the best that we can be. The stats don't even matter to us. It's being able to be out there and being able to be the best you can be, not only as a player but as a character as well.'

KeAndre Lambert-Smith impresses in 2025 Hall of Fame Game in Chargers debut
Former Tiger, KeAndre Lambert-Smith, made big plays in Chargers debut Thursday night. The 2025 NFL Preseason got underway on Thursday night with the annual Hall of Fame Game played in Canton, Ohio Thursday night. A big standout in the game was Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith. The former Auburn Tigers pass catcher impressed anyone who watched him play last season on the plains. He was one of the few bright spots for a tough season for Auburn that ended with a 5-7 record. In his one season with Auburn, Lambert-Smith caught 50 passes for 981 yards and eight touchdowns. He led the team in catches and yards. Lambert-Smith was tied with Cam Coleman for team lead in touchdown receptions. When he arrived at Auburn he did so as the top wide receiver in the transfer portal after playing at Penn State for four seasons. His production over his career resulted in being drafted by the Chargers with the No. 158 pick in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Lambert-Smith did not wait to impress the Chargers or the national audience watching the game on Thursday night. In the Chargers 34-7 win over the Detroit Lions, Lambert-Smith caught two passes for 43 yards and one touchdown. On the second possession for the Chargers, he caught a deep pass near the sideline for 28 yards from quarterback Trey Lance. While that catch did not result in points for the Chargers, the second one did. With 1:51 remaining until halftime, Lance found Lambert-Smith on a slant for a 15-yard touchdown catch. According to Pro Football Focus, Lambert-Smith was the highest graded offensive player from the Hall of Fame Game at 90. On Thursday night, Chargers fans got a glimpse at what Auburn fans already knew about Lambert-Smith. He is a big time player that will make big time plays at the next level. Miami Marlins' Sandy Alcantara talks of emotional roller coaster amid trade deadline uncertainty
Sandy Alcantara admitted that Thursday was one of the hardest days of his career. It has been thought all season that the Miami Marlins could move on from Alcantara amid their rebuilding project, which has included shipping out established players for prospects. And as Thursday's 6 p.m. trade deadline approached, the Marlins ace could not hide his nerves. He sat in front of his television watching baseball programming with his family for most of the day, repeatedly checking his phone to see if he had been traded. "It was hard, man," Alcantara said Friday. "Every time I get on my phone, I see my name. I thought that I was leaving." Miami opted not to trade its 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner. In their only trade Thursday, the Marlins sent their longest-tenured position player in outfielder Jesús Sánchez to the Houston Astros for right-hander Ryan Gusto and two prospects, infielder Chase Jaworsky and outfielder Esmil Valencia. The rest of the team, which has won five straight series and went 15-10 in July, remains intact. Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix said Friday that the club's recent success, in part, factored into its approach at the deadline. And manager Clayton McCullough said if there weren't trade scenarios that "moved the needle for us in the near and the long term," the Marlins were happy to continue competing with the group they have. Amid what was expected to be a season of finding out which of its relatively inexperienced pieces Miami could build around in the future, the Marlins are third in the National League East at 52-55 and entered Friday seven games behind San Diego for the National League's third wild-card spot. Bendix declined to say how close Miami was to finalizing a trade for Alcantara but noted that the team "felt really comfortable" with its ultimate decision. "All of the things that go into building a sustainably successful team were taken into consideration," he said, "at a deadline where you have all of these decisions in front of you. It's our job to be disciplined. Disciplined means listening, means having conversations, and then means trying to figure out the best decision to make for every decision point that we have." Alcantara has played most of his eight-year career in Miami, going 47-64 with a 3.64 ERA in 159 starts while becoming the first Miami player to win the Cy Young Award after a 2022 season in which he pitched a league-high 228 innings and six complete games. Alcantara, 29, missed the 2024 season recovering from Tommy John surgery and hasn't yet returned to form in 2025. He is 6-9 with a 6.36 ERA, and despite being known as one of MLB's most durable starters, has only pitched seven innings once. He said it has taken a new level of mental toughness to play through a season not knowing if he would finish the year with the Marlins. "It was a little hard because everywhere you go, every time you grab your phone, you see your name on the media," Alcantara said. "But you (can't) think too much about it. Just stay focused on everything you can do. I just came here, and if something happened, it just happened." Alcantara's most recent two starts have been his best, an indicator to both the player and the Marlins that he may be close to returning to his All-Star caliber play. He allowed one run and four hits in a season-high seven innings against the San Diego Padres on July 23, then pitched five shutout innings in a win at St. Louis on Tuesday. "Sandy is continuing to trend," McCullough said. "And we're going to continue to be the beneficiaries of having Sandy for the rest of the season, continuing to get back to the pitcher that we all know Sandy is."
