The remarkable achievement left both participants and organisers in awe, setting a new milestone for the prestigious deep-sea fishing competition. Labuan Corporation chief executive officer Mohd Sukuran Taib described the catch as 'overwhelming' and a significant boost to Labuan's standing as a premier destination for sport fishing. 'This historic catch of a rare Black Marlin certainly enhances LISC's prestige. It reflects the rich marine resources of our waters and will surely attract even more international anglers in the future,' he told Bernama after the auction of catches at the Labuan International Sea Sport Complex here today. This year's challenge drew a strong turnout, with 212 participants from Malaysia, Hong Kong and Singapore. On April 22, anglers set sail from Labuan towards the rich fishing grounds off Layangan Island and the Spratly Islands. The Hong Kong team emerged as overall champions, recording the highest cumulative catch weight of 101.70 kg, taking home a cash prize of RM45,000. Malaysia's 360 Anglers 1 team finished second with a total catch of 67.12 kg, earning RM15,000, and the CK Team secured third place with 75.98 kg, receiving RM10,000. The angler who caught the extraordinary Black Marlin was awarded a cash prize of RM3,000 under a special category. Held from April 22 to 27 and organised by Labuan Corporation, the LISC 2025 offered a total of RM350,000 in cash prizes across 12 events. Mohd Sukuran said the deep-sea fishing challenge remains one of the four main highlights of the challenge, alongside the Labuan Round Island Kayak Challenge, Regatta Race 2.0 and Mini Marathon Kayak Challenge. 'The historic feat is expected to further cement Labuan's status as an international hub for marine sports and boost tourism,' he added. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Endrick Determined To Help Harimau Malaya Break Vietnam Hoodoo
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) – Harimau Malaya midfielder Endrick Dos Santos is determined to draw on the experience and insights he gained during his time in Vietnam to help the national team secure a positive result against the Golden Star Warriors in the 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers this Tuesday. Endrick, who is currently on loan with Ho Chi Minh City in the 1 for the 2024-2025 season, said he was working closely with the coaching staff to offer ideas and tactical input that could help Malaysia claim a long-awaited victory over Vietnam — a feat they have not achieved since 2014. 'Many times we come prepared. We also have our analysts who study their game. They are fast, strong, and aggressive, but they also have weaknesses, so we train hard, follow the coach's plan, and I believe we are in a good position to perform well again,' he said at a press conference today. My Grandad's From Melaka, New Harimau Malaya Hero Hevel Tells Hs Detractors
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- To those who question his eligibility to play for Harimau Malaya, midfielder Hector Hevel has this to say: 'My grandfather hailed from Melaka'. Though he doesn't know much about his late grandfather, the 29-year-old said that was the connection that kickstarted talks which culminated in him playing a starring role for Malaysia in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers against Nepal in March. For the record, Hevel is one of seven heritage players in the Harimau Malaya squad. bootstrap slideshow The other six are strikers Rodrigo Holgado and Imanol Machuca and centreback Facundo Garces (from Argentina); defender Jon Irazabal and left-back Gabriel Palmero (Spain); and striker Joao Figueiredo (Brazil). But none of them could have dreamed of making an instant impact like Hevel did, who not only scored the opening goal in their 2-0 win over Nepal in their opening Group F match of the Asian Cup Qualifiers at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in March but also took home the Man of the Match award. And now, having revealed that he will be joining serial winners Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) next season, Hevel plans to use his time here to trace his family lineage. "I will try to go (and seek information about my family's Malaysian ancestry) when I play with (11-time Super League champions) JDT. I will try to learn more about them,' he said at a press conference here today. But that's for another time. For now, Hevel is thrilled to bits after receiving a second call-up to the Harimau Malaya setup as they gear up for their second 2027 Asian Cup Qualifiers Group F match against favourites Vietnam at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (June 10).
