The Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) said on Sunday that for now, only star defender Shinichi Chan won't be playing in the final match against the national team at an East Asian tournament, because his club has recalled him.
Multiple media reports suggested that SAR players competing in the Chinese Super League would be recalled ahead of Tuesday's clash at the East Asian Football Federation E-1 Football Championship in South Korea.
In a statement, the HKFA clarified that the decision for Chan, 22, to play only two of the three games at the tournament had been reached before the competition began.
"[The agreement was] made in consideration of the player's overall physical fitness and best interest, making sure that the player is not overloaded with an intense playing schedule," the statement read.
The HKFA said the coaching team had coordinated this arrangement at the time of player selection and made the necessary preparations to ensure the squad was ready for the games.
It added that so far it has received no other requests for the release of SAR players.
The association stressed that clubs were not obliged to release players for international duty, because the tournament was being held outside the FIFA international match window.
Both the SAR and the national team are looking for their first points at the tournament, having suffered defeats to the hosts and Japan.

East Asian Football Championships: is Chan recall sign China are running scared of Hong Kong?
Hong Kong football bosses have moved to defuse a controversy that had threatened to blow up ahead of the city team's clash with China on Tuesday. With Ashley Westwood's side seeking a first win over their neighbours since 1985, rumours had surfaced that several players contracted to mainland clubs could be recalled after the team's loss to South Korea on Friday. While clubs are not obligated to release players for the East Asian Football Championship because it falls outside a Fifa window, suspicions were heightened when China manager Dejan Djurdjevic refused to confirm if any of his players were being sent back. Faced with the potential for some uncomfortable questions, the Football Association of Hong Kong China (HKFA) released a statement on Sunday that said only Shinichi Chan had left the camp in a 'pre-arranged agreement between the coaching team … and the player's club'. Chan, who plays for Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua, is one of Hong Kong's best players. Dejan Djurdjevic issues final instructions before China's loss to South Korea last Monday. Hong Kong defender targets historic win to break 40-year drought against China
Leon Jones has urged Hong Kong to finish their East Asian Championship campaign in historic style when they meet China on Tuesday. Hong Kong were rigid and determined in a 2-0 loss to hosts South Korea on Friday, three days after failing to do themselves justice in a heavy 6-1 defeat by Japan. Centre-back Jones credited a change of structure for 'making us more competitive' and said a first meaningful meeting with the Chinese since 2022 was 'a chance, against good opposition, to show what we can do'. Hong Kong beat China 2-1 in a behind-closed-doors friendly on New Year's Day last year, but May 19 marked the 40th anniversary of the city team's only competitive success against their mainland rivals: a 2-1 World Cup qualifying win in Beijing. 'A lot of people feel strongly about the Hong Kong team, and China is a big derby game; a big rivalry,' Jones said.
