Iraqi News22-04-2025
The Director of the Media Directorate at the Ministry of Defense, Major General Tahseen Al-Khafaji, confirmed on Tuesday that the international strategic drill (Ur 2), which was conducted today with the participation of five countries, is the first of its kind in the Middle East.
"The Air Force is experiencing a qualitative leap in capabilities, reflecting Iraq's development in absorbing military technology, thanks to the direct support of Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Muhammed S. Al-Sudani," said Al-Khafaji in a statement to Al-Iraqiya News TV channel - followed by the Iraqi News Agency - INA.
"Iraqi Air Force aircraft participated in complex drills in the (Ur 2) to formulate joint work with advanced institutions and support ground forces towards a specific target, with very precise timing and very accurate execution," he noted, adding, "The execution of airstrike directives today is taking place in seconds and minutes, demonstrating a qualitative leap in the development, training, and performance of the Air Force, reflecting Iraq's progress in absorbing technology."
He explained that "the Ur 2 drill is unique and was held with the participation of five countries: the Iraqi, American, Italian, French, and Jordanian air forces. This is the first time this type of drill has taken place in the Middle East."
"The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Al-Sudani, supports the security forces, particularly the Iraqi Army and the Air Force, which is Iraq's long-standing weapon and arm in protecting the security and safety of Iraq's skies," Al-Khafaji explained, noting that "the financial allocations and great interest of the Commander-in-Chief in developing the Iraqi Air Force have had a positive impact, as demonstrated by today's exercise."
Al-Khafajiv pointed out, "With the support provided by the Commander-in-Chief and the Minister of Defense, we have the financial and human capabilities to accommodate the technology, business, and significant developments in the aviation industry," adding, that "this has been proven after Iraq received the most complex weapons, including the Air Force."
He highlighted that "the Air Force Command now possesses several advanced aircraft, such as F-16s from the United States, T-50s from South Korea, advanced surveillance and training aircraft such as the Cessna Caravan, advanced CH5 and CH4 air surveillance aircraft from the People's Republic of China, in addition to 159L close air support aircraft from the Czech Republic."
"This diversity of resources is a diversity in increasing and building capabilities. This underscores the importance of diversifying resources, as well as the ability to absorb the most complex weapons, prepare a suitable environment for pilots, and receive students to train pilots and engineers," he underscored.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces attended the "Ur 2" drill on Tuesday and emphasized the government's efforts to build and develop the Air Force according to modern principles.

Excavation underway at Iraq's largest suspected IS mass grave

Mosul — Iraqi authorities have begun excavating the site of a mass grave believed to contain thousands of victims of the Islamic State (IS) group near Mosul city, the project's director told AFP on Sunday. The first phase, which was launched on August 10, includes surface-level excavation at the Khasfa site, director Ahmed al-Assadi said. An AFP correspondent visiting the site in northern Iraq on Sunday said the team unearthed human skulls buried in the sand. Khasfa is located near Mosul, where IS had established the capital of their self-declared 'caliphate' before being defeated in Iraq in late 2017. Assadi said that there were no precise figures for the numbers of victims buried there — one of dozens of mass graves IS left behind in Iraq — but a UN report from 2018 said Khasfa was likely the country's largest. Official estimates put the number of bodies buried at the site at at least 4,000, with the possibility of thousands more. The project director said the victims buried there include 'soldiers executed by IS', members of the Yazidi minority and residents of Mosul. Exhuming the bodies from Khasfa is particularly difficult, Assadi said, as underground sulphur water makes the earth very porous. The water may have also eroded the human remains, complicating DNA identification of victims, he added. Assadi said further studies will be required before his team can dig deeper and exhume bodies at the site — a sinkhole about 150-metre (nearly 500-foot) deep and 110-metre wide. Iraqi authorities said it was the site of 'one of the worst massacres' committed by IS jihadists, executing 280 in a single day in 2016, many of them interior ministry employees. In a lightning advance that began in 2014, IS had seized large swathes Iraq and neighbouring Syria, enforcing a strict interpretation of Islamic law and committing widespread abuses. The United Nations estimates the jihadists left behind more than 200 mass graves which might contain as many as 12,000 bodies. In addition to IS-era mass graves, Iraqi authorities continue to unearth such sites dating to the rule of Saddam Hussein, who was toppled in a US-led invasion in 2003.

Zelenskyy in Washington for talks with Trump, European leaders

Shafaq News – Washington Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington on Monday to meet US President Donald Trump and several European leaders, stressing the need for a swift and lasting end to the war with Russia. The meeting comes days after the Alaska Summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. 'We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably,' Zelenskyy said on X, expressing confidence that joint efforts with the US and European partners would 'force Russia into a real peace.' I have already arrived in Washington, tomorrow I am meeting with President Trump. Tomorrow we are also speaking with European leaders. I am grateful to @POTUS for the invitation. We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably. And peace must be lasting. Not… — Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський (@ZelenskyyUa) August 18, 2025 The Ukrainian President is scheduled to meet Trump at the White House later today, alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, and other senior officials. For his part, Trump said Zelenskyy could end the conflict with Russia 'almost immediately' if he chose to, while ruling out Ukraine's return of Crimea or its membership in NATO. 'No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE,' he wrote on Truth Social. Trump described the day's summit as a 'big day' at the White House, calling it a 'great honor' for America to host such a large number of European leaders. 'One year ago, the United States was an almost DEAD COUNTRY. Now we are the 'HOTTEST' Country anywhere in the World, the envy of all,' he added.

Analysis by economic expert reveals Iraq is a key multi-dimensional partner for Turkey

Baghdad ( – An economic analysis by expert Manar Al-Obaidi highlights that Iraq is a pivotal partner for Turkey, with a multi-faceted relationship that extends well beyond trade to significantly impact vital Turkish economic sectors. This deep connection, however, also presents Iraq with considerable economic leverage that can be used in key negotiations. The commercial and financial relationship According to Al-Obaidi's analysis, Iraq's role as a major importer of Turkish goods is significant. The country ranks as Turkey's fifth-largest global importer, accounting for over 4% of all Turkish exports. In 2024 alone, this amounted to over $11 billion. Over the last five years, Iraq imported more than $52 billion worth of Turkish goods. The analysis also reveals a severe trade imbalance, with Turkey enjoying a surplus of over $54 billion with Iraq in the last five years. While Iraq's imports dominate in certain sectors, its own exports to Turkey are minimal, totaling less than $3 billion over the same period, consisting mostly of raw materials for re-processing. Tourism and investment The report underscores the critical role of Iraqi tourism and investment in the Turkish economy. In 2024, approximately 2 million Iraqi tourists visited Turkey, spending over $2 billion. Over a decade (2015–2024), more than 14 million Iraqi tourists spent over $13 billion, making Iraq the sixth-largest source of tourists for Turkey globally. In the real estate market, Iraqis have been a driving force among foreign investors in Turkey, purchasing over 45,000 residential and commercial properties valued at more than $2 billion within the last five years. Strategic leverage Al-Obaidi also points out that Turkish investments in Iraq over the last decade have reached over $35 billion, with Turkish companies securing a majority of contracts for housing complexes and other major infrastructure projects. He notes that this comprehensive economic interdependence, including an estimated $1 billion in annual remittances from Iraqis to Turkey, gives Iraq significant economic leverage. This strategic advantage, the analysis concludes, could be effectively utilized by Iraq to strengthen its negotiating position on contentious issues, particularly concerning water rights and the massive trade imbalance with Turkey.
