Treasury yields and a gauge of the dollar steadied. The benchmark 10-year yield shed five basis points in the previous session as Fed Chair Jerome Powell said 'many paths are possible' for monetary policy. Traders continued to keep a very close eye on Middle East as the situation surrounding the nascent peace deal remains precarious. Iran and Israel appeared to honor the agreement after Trump lashed out at both side for early breaches.
'Markets are finally breathing again,' said Haris Khurshid, chief investment officer at Karobaar Capital. 'The easing in Middle East tensions, paired with Powell striking a more flexible tone, is giving equities room to run and volatility a much-needed pause.'
Powell's remarks before the House Financial Services Committee came on the heels of the Fed's decision last week to stay on hold. While the Fed chair largely maintained his call for patience as the economy absorbs the impact of trade tariffs, he said that lower inflation and weaker labor hiring could lead to an earlier rate cut. Money markets fully priced in two Fed cuts by the end of 2025, with a first move in September far more likely than next month — though bets on a July reduction edged up from last week.
Live Events
'If it turns out that inflation pressures do remain contained, then we will get to a place where we cut rates, sooner rather than later,' Powell told lawmakers in response to a question about the possibility of a July move. 'But I wouldn't want to point to a particular meeting. I don't think we need to be in any rush because the economy is still strong.'
To Andrew Brenner at NatAlliance Securities, Powell was unable to 'convince markets of hawkishness.'
'The markets are telling Powell that he will be lowering rates much more quickly than he portrayed today,' Brenner noted. 'We just don't know about July. We would need a weak payroll report.'
Fed Bank of Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari said officials need more clarity on how tariffs will impact prices even as recent inflation data has been 'quite positive.' His New York counterpart John Williams said it's 'entirely appropriate' to hold rates to analyze impacts of policy changes. Fed Governor Michael Barr said he anticipates tariffs will drive up inflation and expressed support for a wait-and-see approach on rates.
Fed Bank of Cleveland chief Beth Hammack said policymakers may hold borrowing costs steady for some time. Meantime, Boston Fed President Susan M. Collins said the modestly restrictive stance is necessary.
Trump on Tuesday surprised both oil traders and officials in his own government by appearing to undermine years of US sanctions on Iran, giving its biggest customer China the green light to carry on buying the Islamic Republic's oil as he seeks to bolster the ceasefire with Israel.
In Asia, Australia reports inflation later Wednesday, while the Bank of Thailand is expected to keep its policy rate steady. South Korea's bid for a developed-market status hit a setback after MSCI Inc. kept the country in the emerging-market category following a review.

Gold price today: MCX gold rate rises above ₹97,000 as US dollar, Treasury yields slip; Israel-Iran ceasefire eyed

Gold price opened higher on Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) on Wednesday, stabilising after a sharp slump in the previous session, as investors monitored the fragile truce between Israel and Iran. MCX gold rate opened 0.29% higher at ₹ 97,311 per 10 grams as against its previous close of ₹ 97,023. MCX silver prices also opened 0.22% higher at ₹ 1,06,341 per kg, as compared to its previous close of ₹ 1,06,102. At 9:10 AM, MCX gold price was trading higher by ₹ 277, or 0.29%, at ₹ 97,300 per gram. MCX silver rate was up by ₹ 299, or 0.28%, at ₹ 1,05,216 per kg. In the global markets, gold prices firmed as the US dollar and Treasury yields retreated. Spot gold price rose 0.2% to $3,328.89 per ounce, after hitting a more than two-week low on Tuesday. US gold futures gained 0.3% to $3,343.00. Spot silver was steady at $35.90 per ounce. The Israel-Iran ceasefire on Tuesday signalled that the air war between them had ended, at least for now, denting safe-have demand for the yellow metal. MCX gold price crashed by 2.41%, or by ₹ 2,394, in the previous session to fall below ₹ 97,000 level. Gains in gold price today were supported by a weak US dollar index, which hovered near a one-week low, making bullion more attractive for other currency holders. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yields remained near a more than one-month low. Meanwhile, US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, in his testimony to the members of Congress, said that higher tariffs could begin raising inflation this summer, a period that will be key to the Fed's consideration of possible rate cuts, Reuters reported. Fed funds futures traders are now pricing in 60 basis points of rate cuts for 2025, with the first move expected to come in September. Rahul Kalantri, VP Commodities, Mehta Equities Ltd. said that gold price has support at $3,300-3,277 levels, while resistance is seen at $3,348-3,365. Silver has support at $35.50-35.20, while resistance is at $36.30-36.55. 'MCX gold price has support at ₹ 96,450 - 95,910 levels, while resistance at ₹ 97,650 - 98,100. Silver price has support at ₹ 104,280 - 103,600, while resistance at ₹ 1,05.850 - 1,06,500,' Kalantri said.

Supply chain disrupted, dry fruit prices spike in Telangana

HYDERABAD: The prices of dry fruits in Hyderabad have witnessed a sharp upward spike, putting both traders and consumers under pressure. The price of Mamra almonds has surged from Rs 2,600 to Rs 3,600 per kg. Pistachios, too, have become dearer, climbing from Rs 900 to Rs 1,200 per kg, according to Vijay Grover of Shivram Peshawari and Brothers. The geopolitical disruptions, stretching from the Indo-Pakistan border to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, are cited as the reason. A recent explosion at Iran's Shahid Rajaee port, its largest maritime hub and primary trade gateway, has only worsened the situation by severely disrupting the movement of goods. Hyderabad's thriving dry fruit and spice trade is heavily dependent on imports from Iran. Large quantities of pistachios, saffron, dates, Mamra almonds, and even fresh fruits like apples and kiwis make their way from Iran to the city's markets every season. Traders fear that if these disruptions continue, prices could rise further or supplies could become irregular. Aman Khan, of Afghan Baghban Dry Fruits Hub, said the impact on the market has been considerable. 'We usually import dry fruits and spices from countries like Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey. But the ongoing tensions in West Asia are a major concern,' he told TNIE. Aman Khan explained that the closure of the Attari-Wagah border crossing has forced importers to rely on air cargo instead of traditional land or sea routes. 'For example, pistachios come to us mainly from Iran. Earlier, we imported around 15 to 20 containers daily through Mumbai. Now that number has dropped to just six to 10 containers,' he said. 'Using air cargo is far more expensive and not sustainable in the long run. Eventually, the increased costs get passed on to consumers,' he added. The timing of these disruptions is especially worrying for traders, as India approaches its festive season, a period when demand for dry fruits typically peaks. There is growing unease in the markets over the uncertainty surrounding the Israel-Iran conflict, which could escalate further.
