State sends National Guard members to Washington at Trump team's request
Governor Patrick Morrisey said in a post on Saturday on X that he was deploying '300-400 skilled personnel' from the West Virginia National Guard to support Mr Trump's 'initiative to make DC safe and beautiful'.
Mr Morrisey said the step reflects 'our commitment to a strong and secure America'.
They will arrive in the District of Columbia along with equipment and specialised training services, his office said in a statement.
'West Virginia is proud to stand with President Trump in his effort to restore pride and beauty to our nation's capital,' Mr Morrisey said.
'The men and women of our National Guard represent the best of our state, and this mission reflects our shared commitment to a strong and secure America.'
The move comes as federal agents and National Guard troops have begun to appear across the heavily Democratic city after Mr Trump's executive order on Monday federalising local police forces and activating about 800 DC National Guard troops for his plan.
Maj Gen James Seward, West Virginia's adjutant general, said in a statement that members of the state's National Guard 'stand ready to support our partners in the National Capital Region' and that the Guard's 'unique capabilities and preparedness make it an invaluable partner in this important undertaking.'
Federal agents have appeared in some of the city's most highly trafficked neighbourhoods, garnering praise, pushback and alarm from local residents and leaders across the country.
City leaders, who are obliged to co-operate with the president's order under the federal laws that direct the district's local governance, have sought to work with the administration though have bristled at the scope of the president's takeover.
On Friday the administration reversed course on an order that aimed to place the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration as an 'emergency police commissioner' after the district's top lawyer sued to contest.
After a court hearing, Mr Trump's attorney general, Pam Bondi, issued a memo that directed the Metropolitan Police Department to co-operate with federal immigration enforcement regardless of any city law.
District officials say they are evaluating how to best comply.
In his order Monday, Mr Trump declared an emergency because of the 'city government's failure to maintain public order'.
He said that impeded the 'federal government's ability to operate efficiently to address the nation's broader interests without fear of our workers being subjected to rampant violence.'
In a letter to city residents, Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, wrote that 'our limited self-government has never faced the type of test we are facing right now'.
She added that if Washingtonians stick together, 'we will show the entire nation what it looks like to fight for American democracy – even when we don't have full access to it'.
A protest against Mr Trump's intervention drew scores of people to Dupont Circle on Saturday afternoon before a march to the White House, about one and a half miles away.
Demonstrators assembled behind a banner that said 'No fascist takeover of DC' and some in the crowd held signs that said 'No military occupation'.
Mr Trump was at his Virginia golf club after Friday's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

At the top of a multilateral meeting at the White House, the Prime Minister told Trump: "I really feel that we can, I think, with the right approach this afternoon, make real progress, particularly on the security guarantees." Details of what the US is willing to provide or support by way of security guarantees have not yet emerged. But there have been indications from Trump and his team that US boots on the ground as well as a 'NATO-style' protection guarantee were on the table. Earlier, Donald Trump was apparently caught on a 'hot mic' discussing his real thoughts about Putin's intentions. As people were still milling around, he appeared to be speaking to French President Emmanuel Macron. He was heard on an open microphone saying: "I think he wants to make a deal for me. "Do you understand? As crazy as it sounds." Asked earlier in the Oval Office if he would rule out such deployment of US forces as peacekeepers, the president said, "We'll let you know that, maybe, later today. "We're meeting with seven great leaders of great countries, also, and we'll be talking about that." "They'll all be involved," he added. "When it comes to security, there's going to be a lot of help." Asked about "Nato-like protection" for Ukraine - an idea that had been floated by his envoy Steve Witkoff - Trump said the US would "help them out with that", referring to European leaders. Trump said: "I don't know if you define it that way, but Nato-like? I mean, we're going to give, we have people waiting in another room right now, they're all here, from Europe. "Biggest people in Europe. "And they want to give protection, they feel very strongly about it, and we'll help them out with that." Hopes for the meetings had been gloomy after Trump posted on Truth Social this morning a string of demands for Ukraine - which lined up with many of Russia's demands. They included "forgetting" about Nato membership, and ruling out returning Crimea from Russia to Ukraine. But the Oval Office appearance went smoothly - and vastly less eventfully than their disastrous last White House meeting. Trump indicated that US troops being involved in peacekeeping efforts was on the table for discussion - as was a "NATO style" security guarantee. Both Trump and Zelensky said they were ready for a trilateral meeting with Russia's ruthless dictator, Vladimir Putin. Trump gave away clue he's changed mind about Zelensky with one telling gesture
US President Donald Trump is typically keen to assert dominance when meeting with other world leaders, particularly with firm handshakes known as the infamous bone crusher Donald Trump gave away one major clue that he has changed his opinion about Volodymyr Zelensky, a body language expert has told The Mirror. The US President commanded a major presence when he met with his Ukrainian counterpart outside the White House. Observers would have been waiting in anticipation to see whether the meeting would be a repeat of Zelensky's disastrous visit to the White House earlier this year where he was scolded by the media and Vice President JD Vance for not wearing a suit. But, in stark contrast to his previous visit, Trump warmly greeted Zelensky and avoided a major power move where he clearly asserted dominance over his political counterparts. Body language expert Darren Stanton told The Mirror: "The final handshake was one of mutual trust, rapport and respect. Sometimes with handshakes, Trump does what is called the 'bone crusher' handshake as he did with Shinto Abe, the previous Japanese Prime Minister who was assassinated. "With Zelensky it's a massive contrast to six months ago the final handshake was equal. Trump did not do his bone crusher handshake. Sometimes if people put their palm on top it may mean they consider themselves more powerful but with Trump it was a handshake of mutual trust, rapport and respect." Zelensky has so far managed to avoid any major disagreements with Trump or his Vice President JD Vance. The Republican vice president lashed out at Zelensky for not wearing a suit and also not saying "thank you" for US support, despite the Ukrainian having done so on several occasions. Trump will hope the meeting with Zelensky will lead to a ceasefire and lasting peace deal. It is unclear whether Zelensky would accept Vladimir Putin's steep demands of annexing occupied territory. The US President has been keen to pursue a peace deal and initially appeared favourable to Putin. But following Putin's apparent unwillingness to stop bombing Ukraine, Trump pivoted towards favouring Zelensky.
