Time of India5 hours ago
Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh high court on Monday reserved its judgment on the fate of three convicts sentenced to death by the Shimla trial court in the sensational case of kidnapping and brutal murder of four-year-old Yug Gupta in June 2014.
The skeletal remains of the boy were found in a municipal water tank two years later.
The special division bench of the high court, comprising Justice Vivek Singh Thakur and Justice Rakesh Kainthla, reserved the judgment after the arguments from all the parties concluded in the case on Monday.
The death sentence reference for confirmation has been pending in the high court since 2018, and all three convicts – Chander Sharma, Tejinder Pal and Vikrant Bakshi – have also filed separate appeals against the trial court verdict.
Yug was kidnapped on June 14, 2014, from Ram Bazar in Shimla, and a ransom of Rs 3.5 crore was demanded by the culprits from his businessman father. His skeletal remains were recovered from a municipal water tank in the Kelestal area of Shimla on Aug 22, 2016.
The kidnapping and murder of the child had resulted in widespread resentment among the people in Shimla, leading to massive demonstrations and candlelight processions seeking justice.
The police arrested Chander Sharma (26), Tejinder Pal (29), and Vikrant Bakshi (22), all residents of Shimla, on August 22, 2016, on charges of kidnapping and murder.
During interrogation, the trio revealed that they disposed of the child's body in a water storage tank of the municipal corporation in the Keleston area in Bharari a week after the kidnapping. It also came to light during the investigation that the trio not only tortured the child but also starved him and forced him to consume liquor.
On Sept 5, 2018, the court of Shimla district and sessions judge Virender Singh, terming it a rarest of the rare case, awarded the death sentence to all three convicts.
