The Times of Troy: Here is what USC needs to do to upset UConn, reach the Final Four

Hi, everyone! Welcome back to another week of the Times of Troy newsletter. I'm Ryan Kartje, your USC beat writer at The Times, coming to you from sunny Spokane, Wash., where USC will face Connecticut Monday night with a chance to earn its first Final Four bid in almost 40 years.
Of course, the basketball world is pretty convinced that won't happen. Not without JuJu Watkins at least. The Trojans opened as 13-point underdogs to UConn, a number that would've seemed unthinkable just nine days ago. But that was before Watkins suffered a season-ending ACL tear and before UConn star Paige Bueckers went absolutely berserk, scoring 40 in the Sweet 16. Connecticut probably would have been favored with Watkins. Now you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who gives USC a puncher's chance. Even though, just four months earlier, they beat the Huskies on their home court.
But for a moment, let's entertain the idea that the Trojans aren't just forfeiting this Elite Eight matchup before it begins. This is March, after all. Anything can happen.
So what exactly would need to happen for USC to defy the odds and move onto the Final Four?
A year ago, when he first took the reins of USC's men's basketball team, Eric Musselman had an entire roster to rebuild.
The job is much more manageable this time around. So where will USC train its focus this portal season?
It starts down low, where the Trojans are in dire need of big men. Only Rashaun Agee is slated to return, and that's assuming the NCAA grants his waiver for an extra year.
USC has already been in hot pursuit of Florida State sophomore Taylor Bol Bowen, who visited campus last week, while Indiana forward Malik Reneau, another visitor, is a prime possibility to fit in as a four. Expect Musselman to add multiple players in that mold, especially if they offer any sort of rim protection.
The rest of USC's portal plan hinges, in part, on what happens in the coming weeks. Desmond Claude could still test the draft waters, but considering where his stock currently stands, I'd expect him to return for another season. Kevin Patton and Isaiah Elohim have already entered their names in the portal, while the only other player whose future seems at all uncertain is Jalen Shelley. USC would certainly prefer to keep him in the fold.
A new point guard will be needed no matter what, with exactly zero options right now behind Claude. But USC is already bringing in three freshman guards, including five-star Alijah Arenas. With Claude, Yates and Arenas, there's not a lot of room left for a ball-dominant scorer in the backcourt.
The frontcourt is another story. Don't be surprised if every player 6-foot-8 or taller in the transfer portal gets a good long look.
—Kamari Ramsey's decision to stay at USC 'wasn't really that hard.' Even still, the Trojans safety surprised me when he chose to forego the draft, where I expect he could have been a Day 2 pick. But Ramsey called it 'a business decision.' The prospect of revenue sharing, plus what I'm sure was a strong NIL package, probably helped ease any concern about forgoing an NFL paycheck. However it happened, his return is a major lift to a secondary that was pretty much starting from scratch otherwise.
—Lincoln Riley was asked why USC canceled its spring game. And his answer was in close alignment with what we wrote in this space a month ago. No team wants to actually show anything schematically that they're going to use during the season. So it's just not worth the time spent on preparing for the spring game, just to put on a totally unremarkable exhibition. 'We felt like we could just continue to progress and not have to maybe worry about that,' Riley said. Makes sense to me.
—Ethan Hedges continues to rake as a two-way star for USC baseball. Hedges hit his ninth and tenth home runs of the season on Saturday against Indiana, continuing his scorching start to the season. His homer in the eighth inning energized a wild, 10-run comeback, as USC won 13-12. The comeback was USC's biggest since 2003. Hedges is still batting over .400 while also serving as USC's closer this season, allowing six hits over nine innings. The Trojans are off to a 16-11 start and need just 10 more wins to best their top record of the past decade. It looks like they'll reach that mark with ease.

No show in recent memory has made me laugh out loud like 'Righteous Gemstones.' The HBO comedy follows a not-so righteous family of evangelicals behind a mega church. The three siblings — played by Danny McBride, Adam Devine and Edi Patterson — are hilarious and perfect, and Walton Goggins as their uncle Baby Billy is one of my favorite supporting performances I can remember. The show is in its last season, but trust me, the four seasons fly by.

Liona Lefau named to Polynesian Player of the Year Award watchlist

Liona Lefau has been placed on the Polynesian Player of the Year watchlist. The Texas LB has the ability to become the first Longhorn to win the award. The Texas LB room is dominated by Anthony Hill Jr, for good reason. He is the leader of this group and one of the best LBs in the country. He is not the only LB for Texas that is getting preseason hype however. Liona Lefau, who totaled 63 tackles and 2 sacks a year ago, has been placed on the Polynesian Player of the Year Watchlist. It is the second award watchlist he's been placed on, joining the Butkus Award. The award has never been won by a Longhorn, and Lefau would join the likes of Tua Tagovailoa and Marcus Mariota if he were to win. This is still a relatively new award, only starting in 2014, when Marcus Mariota won, but the list of winners is star studded, including top WR in the NFL Draft, Tetairoa McMillan. It has quickly become a great honor for all players of Polyneisian descent in college football(as well as NFL and highschool). Lefau, I'm sure, would love to join this elite crew and be celebrated, but it is going to take a remarkable year. Some of the other contenders for the award include Makai Lemon(USC WR), Francis Mauigoa(Miami OT) and rival Jaydn Ott(Oklahoma RB). It is a loaded group of some of the best players in the entire sport, as the recruiting pipeline to Hawaii has increased since Mariota came onto the scene. Although the competition is fierce, Lefau can absolutely be the winner of this one, given the expectations for him this year. The Polynesian Bowl, Hall of Fame and Player of the Year award have all become massive pieces of the college football world recently, and the legacy of all of those precede them. Lefau would be able to etch his name into an elite group of players and become the first(hopefully of many) Longhorns to be honored with this award. Lefau heads into this year as the comfortable starter next to Anthony Hill Jr., but there will be more bodies in that room that are likely to rotate in. I believe Lefau can stand out in a big way this year, and if he does he could have an incredible honor waiting for him at the end of the year.

Pressure From The League And Various Buyers Has The Connecticut Suns' Future In Limbo

During a wave of league expansion that projects the WNBA to foster 18 basketball teams by the end of the decade, strenuous back-and-forth negotiations are ongoing as it pertains to the sale of a current league team known as the Connecticut Sun. Earlier this month, the Boston Globe reported that Boston Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca had agreed to a $325 million deal to purchase the Sun from its team ownership group the Mohegan Tribe. Once bought, Pagliuca would move the franchise from its current Uncasville, Connecticut, location to the city of Boston, Massachusetts. Once Boston bound, the team would rebrand and play all of its home games at TD Garden where the Celtics and NHL Boston Bruins host their sports matchups. Also part of the reported agreement would be a $100 million contribution from Pagliuca to build the relocated WNBA franchise a new practice facility. Boston's new professional team would reportedly be ready to officially launch in 2027. However, WNBA commissioner Cathy Englebert has not brought Pagliuca and the Mohegan Tribe's agreed offer to the league's board of governors. This is despite both sides coming to an agreement last month. Since that time, Connecticut native and former Milwaukee Bucks owner Mark Larsy has allegedly matched Pagliuca's $325 million bid in hopes of moving the team to Hartford, Connecticut. Larsy also is proposing a state-funded practice facility for the team in hopes of keeping the organization in-state. Ultimately for the sale of any WNBA team to occur, the league of governors needs to sign off on any agreement reached between the buyer and seller. Its been rumored that the league is hesitant to agree on any of the current relocation transactions, because they desire the Sun to be an expansion team for the Houston, Texas, area. According to Front Office Sports Anne Costabile, the WNBA is prioritizing bringing women's professional basketball back to Houston under the franchise's original WNBA team namesake the Houston Comets. Ideally, the move would be done through a Connecticut Sun rebrand once the relocation terms are agreed upon by the buyer, seller and the league. Houston Rockets' owner Tilman Fertitta has been reportedly leading the charge in bringing the Comets back to Houston. Below Costabile states: 'Houston is still the league's preferred landing spot for the Sun, according to sources familiar with the sale. Houston's expansion bid, led by Fertitta — who is currently serving as the Trump administration's ambassador to Italy — was reportedly short of the $250 million expansion fee paid by Cleveland, Detroit, and Philadelphia (all were recently awarded expansion franchises).' However, if Fertitta is willing to pay the sale price... plus a relocation fee to expedite the process of getting a team, the league would favor that deal, one source familiar with the sale told FOS." The reported asking price from the league to buy and relocate the Sun to Houston would be nearly half a billion dollars. It would be the largest purchase of a WNBA team in the league's history if such a relocation deal was reached. From 1997 to 2008, the Houston Comets were the league's crowning jewel of historical league-wide dominance as one of the association's eight original teams. The Comets won the first four WNBA titles cementing themselves as one of the greatest American professional sports dynasties of all-time. Fan interest during the Comets dormant years spelled the beginning of its end before the franchise folded altogether in 2008 during the Great Recession. Under potential new ownership and funding, the Comets have the tools to be a prosperous WNBA franchise. The organization would feature the proper funding, state-of-the-art practice facilities and its own regional sports network called Space City Home Network which would be its primary outlet to broadcast Comets' home games in the Summer. As of now, no purchase of the Connecticut Sun seems imminent with the organization's ownership declaring the team would still be playing in-state and inside Mohegan Sun Arena during 2026. "We've gotten a lot of positive feelings from our fans based on the news that we'll be here next year," Sun President Jennifer Rizzotti said. "I know there's still uncertainty about the future, but our loyal fans, they're excited to be able to watch this team grow and get into Year Two of this retooling of the roster and see where we can go. And if it ends up being our last year here, we're going to make sure we blow it out."

Who are the Top 10 Impact Transfer Quarterbacks Entering the 2025 CFB Season?

In a sport where quarterbacks loom large, it's only natural that they would dominate the 2024-25 college football transfer portal. Of course, an enormous number of players change teams through the portal every year, making it easy for one to forget a move or two. With that in mind, which quarterbacks will have the biggest impact on their new programs? Here are the top 10 impact transfer quarterbacks entering the 2025 college football season, according to FOX Sports Research. Moss waited his turn for three seasons at USC before getting the starting nod for the 2024 season. While he was benched after nine games, Moss flashed some promise in the appearances he did make, showcasing an ability to be decisive and fire quick, crisp passes. In 2024, Moss totaled 2,555 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, nine interceptions and a 135.1 passer rating, while completing 64.4% of his passes. Moss joins a Louisville program that's 19-8 in its first two seasons under head coach Jeff Brohm. Ironically, the best game of Moss' collegiate career came when USC played Louisville in the 2023 Holiday Bowl in what was Moss' first career start and one that saw him throw for 372 yards and six touchdowns. After redshirting his 2023 freshman season, Mensah was Tulane's starting quarterback in 2024 and balled out. Last season, Mensah totaled 2,723 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, six interceptions and a 166.7 passer rating, while completing 65.9% of his passes. His passer rating and completion percentage each led the AAC. Mensah entered the transfer portal following Tulane's loss to Army in the AAC Championship Game, with the Green Wave going 9-4 with him as their quarterback. The now-junior joins a Duke program that's coming off a 9-4 season in what was its first season under head coach Manny Diaz. Salter defines "dual-threat." Across his four seasons at Liberty (2021-24) and two-plus years as its starting quarterback, Salter was an electric rusher who did his share of damage in the air. Prior to an underwhelming 2024 campaign by Salter's standards, he totaled 2,876 passing yards, 32 passing touchdowns, six interceptions and a 176.6 passer rating, while completing 61.0% of his passes in 2023. Salter's passing touchdown total and passer rating each led Conference USA. He also rushed for 1,089 yards and 12 touchdowns. The senior quarterback is expected to be Colorado's 2025 starter, and he'll add a rushing dimension that the program hasn't had in recent memory. The Utes want to impose their will up front and have the running game reap the benefits. Well, a quarterback who rushes like nobody's business would fit that model, wouldn't it? In his sophomore season at New Mexico (2024), Dampier totaled 2,768 passing yards, 12 passing touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 121.6 passer rating, while completing 57.9% of his passes. At the same time, he rushed for 1,166 yards and 19 touchdowns on a Mountain West-high 7.5 yards per carry. Each of Dampier's aforementioned rushing totals would've led the Utes last season. Utah is coming off a season that saw it fail to attain bowl eligibility for the first time in a full season since 2013 – the Utes only played five games in the 2020 season, which was a truncated season in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Murphy was a five-star quarterback recruit at Texas, making two starts for the Longhorns in his 2023 freshman campaign. Then, he transferred to Duke for the 2024 season and transferred to Beaver Land thereafter. In what was his first season as a full-time starter (2024), Murphy, who has showcased a strong arm, totaled 2,933 passing yards, 26 passing touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 133.5 passer rating, while completing 60.3% of his passes in 12 starts, of which the Blue Devils went 9-3. The 6-foot-5 quarterback joins an Oregon State team that's coming off a 5-7 season and entering its second season under head coach Trent Bray. His departure was ugly, but, nevertheless, Iamaleava departed Knoxville for L.A. after his first season as the team's starter. In said season, Iamaleava totaled 2,616 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, five interceptions and a 145.3 passer rating, while completing 63.8% of his passes. He also rushed for 358 yards and three touchdowns. Tennessee went 10-2 and reached the College Football Playoff before losing to Ohio State in the first round. The sophomore quarterback, who redshirted one season and is from the Greater Los Angeles Area, joins a Bruins team that went 5-7 in their first year under head coach and former school running back Deshaun Foster. Morris lived in various parts of Texas throughout his childhood, which was followed by playing one season at Oklahoma (2020), three at TCU (2021-23) and one at North Texas (2024). After essentially living his entire life in the heart of Big 12 country, Morris is now in I-95 territory. Last season was Morris' best piece of work, as the quarterback totaled 3,774 passing yards, 31 passing touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 140.1 passer rating, while completing 62.9% of his passes. His passing yards and passing touchdown total each led the AAC. Morris also rushed for 242 yards and four touchdowns. The sixth-year quarterback is under center for a Virginia program that hasn't been bowl eligible in four years. Across his two seasons at California in 2023 and 2024, Mendoza showcased an ability to sling the rock with efficiency. Last year, he totaled 3,004 passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns, six interceptions and a 144.6 passer rating, while completing 68.7% of his passes. Entering his junior season, the 6-foot-5 signal-caller will be under center for an Indiana program that was the breakout team of 2024, finishing 11-2 and making an appearance in the College Football Playoff in what was its first year under head coach Curt Cignetti. One year ago, Beck looked like a shoo-in to be a top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, but a lot can change in one season of college football, as Beck ended up transferring from Georgia to Miami after leading the SEC with 12 interceptions and suffering a season-ending elbow injury in the SEC Championship Game. However, he still threw for a career-high 28 touchdowns. The year prior, Beck totaled an SEC-high 3,941 passing yards and completed 72.4% of his passes. The 6-foot-4 Beck has a strong arm, methodically brought the Bulldogs down the field and can use his legs when needed. He replaces 2024 Heisman Trophy finalist and the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Cam Ward, under center for Miami, which went 10-3 last season. Arguably the best quarterback in the portal set up shop in Norman, Oklahoma, for a season where head coach Brent Venables is likely on the hot seat after the Sooners posted their second losing campaign in his three years on the job. As for Venables' new quarterback, Mateer shined in his first season as Washington State's starter in 2024, totaling 3,139 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns, seven interceptions and a 164.1 passer rating, while completing 64.6% of his passes. He also rushed for 826 yards and 15 touchdowns. Mateer, who led the Cougars in both passing yards and rushing yards, helped Washington State to an 8-4 record before entering the portal.
