F1 in talks for return of screaming V10 engines
Formula One nostalgists could be celebrating the return of screaming V10s with a return to naturally aspirated engines now being actively discussed between teams and the FIA.
The sport is preparing for arguably its biggest ever rule changes next season when cars will undergo a full-scale overhaul on both the chassis and engine side.
The new 'power unit' formula - a hybrid concept which will feature a 50/50 split between electric and internal combustion power, running on sustainable fuel - has convinced new manufacturers such as Audi to enter the sport, and persuaded the likes of Honda to stay.
But it has also attracted critics because of the exorbitant cost involved in developing the technology, and because they will add a huge amount of weight to the car.
That is to say nothing of the noise, with many fans deriding the current 1.6-litre V6 turbocharged hybrid engines as little louder than lawnmowers.

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem admitted recently that he felt Formula 1 should at least consider switching back to V10 engines in the not-too-distant future, running on sustainable fuel.
And F1's single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis gave a media briefing prior to Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix at which he admitted the concept was 'being evaluated for 2028 or 2029' between grand prix racing's manufacturers and the FIA.
'Certainly, the progress with sustainable fuels has led to the view that maybe the engines could be simpler,' he explained.
'The world economy does lead to views that maybe we should try to cut costs a bit more, and the current power units are way too expensive. That is a fact. We would like them to be cheaper, and that's why the president made the comments about the V10 engine in '28 and so on.
'That's something we are evaluating, or for '29 or whatever, with the PU manufacturers. We are discussing openly with them the best direction for the sport.'
Understandably, if there was a broad consensus from teams and manufacturers to switch to V10s in three or four years, it would not make much sense to spend a lot more development money on the new turbo hybrids coming next year.
One suggestion has even been for the new engines to be scrapped completely. F1 could continue with the current power units until the switch to V10s is made.
This would, though, present all sorts of problems, not least for Audi who don't have an alternative. Other teams, meanwhile, have already switched over their programmes to the new 2026 designs.
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said earlier this week that as far as next year's engines are concerned, 'it's ten-past-midnight and Cinderella's left the building'.
In reality there is zero chance of continuing with the current power units. It would need unanimity from teams, and it is understood Mercedes, who are believed to have the leading PU for 2026, would definitely be against a switch for at least the next three seasons. But the manufacturer would not be against a return to V10s in 2029.
There remain other obstacles, including the fact that the old V10s were so noisy they could fall foul of noise pollution laws in some F1 host countries, notably the United States. But the idea is gaining traction.
Tombazis stressed there was no intention to railroad anyone. 'Above all, the obligation is to be fair, and people have invested a lot of money,' he said. 'If nine people are in favour and one person is against and that one person is being treated unfairly, we will always also try to protect the one person.
'We won't just go on majorities and say, 'OK let's do it.' We're trying to build a consensus here, and if that fails, then we will stay where we are.'

Three people killed in crash on interstate in South Carolina, cops say
Three people were killed early Sunday morning in a crash on Interstate 85, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The three-vehicle collision happened at about 12:15 a.m. in Spartanburg County, said Master Trooper William Bennett. A 2015 Honda sedan was driving south in the northbound lanes of I-85, according to Bennett. At the 75 mile marker the Honda collided head-on with a 2019 Toyota sedan that was driving north on I-85, Bennett said. After that collision, the Honda then crashed into a 2024 Ford Expedition that was also heading north on the interstate, according to Bennett. The driver, who was the only person in the Honda, as well as both the driver and a passenger in the Toyota died at the scene, Bennett said. The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office has not publicly identified any of the victims. In addition to the Ford driver, there were five passengers in the SUV, but none of those occupants were hurt, according to Bennett. No other injuries were reported. There was no word if anyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt. Information about how the Honda came to be driving toward oncoming traffic on I-85 was not available, but the wreck continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol. Through June 1, at least 316 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported. At least 38 people have died in Spartanburg County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 60 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported. That includes a fatal crash on Saturday afternoon. At about 1:50 p.m., both a 2007 Dodge Ram and a 2008 Yamaha motorcycle were driving north on S.C. 11, Bennett said. When the pickup truck turned left onto Cannon Ford Road it was hit on the driver's side by the motorcycle, according to Bennett. The motorcycle driver, who died at the scene, has not been publicly identified by the coroner's office. Bennett said the pickup driver, who was the only person in the truck, was not hurt, and no other injuries were reported. This crash also continues to be investigated by the Highway Patrol.

What's The Most Popular Lawn Mower Brand In The USA?
Automated tech has rapidly revolutionized how we do household chores in recent years, with lawn-mowing being no exception. We've moved far beyond the traditional push and riding mowers that carried us for decades. Now, features like AI and battery power make mowing a time-saving, eco-friendly, and often hands-free project. Adding to the excitement, young players are bringing inspired innovation to a centuries-old task. The landscape is aptly changing in an industry that helps us change our landscapes, but does that mean the old guards are making way for the new? Or, are time-honored brands adapting to shifting needs and expectations? By more than one measure, it seems those reliable names we've leaned on for decades remain leaders among lawn mower brands in the U.S. Deere & Co., the No. 1 lawn and garden manufacturer in America, is the nation's top choice for reliability among lawn mower brands, according to a 2025 Life Story Research survey. It's the sixth straight year the brand topped the list. Following John Deere are other familiar tried-and-true names, including Honda, Toro, and the value-priced Craftsman. Husqvarna, another well-established lawn care brand, also features prominently. The company made the survey's top four in 2024. With so many lawn mower styles available, each brand has found its niche. The average consumer, therefore, may find the most popular or go-to brand changes based on the style they want, whether it's a classic push mower or a more advanced zero-turn riding mower. Read more: Milwaukee Products You Shouldn't Pass On Even If You're Not In The Market For Tools Just as "nothing runs like a Deere," nothing sells like a Deere either, and for good reason. Alongside its long-standing reputation for quality, the brand has situated itself directly on the line between commercial and residential use. A professional pedigree bolsters its residential brand, elevating it in the eyes of homeowners. Emphasizing the point, John Deere exited the push mower market in 2012. Its focus turned to the riding mower market, arguably the dominant mower segment and the bridge between the homeowner and lawn care expert. John Deere is also one of the top three American manufacturers, with over 1,000 employees working out of its Horicon, Wisconsin location. Homeowners agree that John Deere, maker of some of the highest-reviewed riding lawn mowers under $3,000, is one of the most reliable lawn care brands. According to a 2025 GreenPals survey, 9.7% of voters identified the Z300 as their favorite mower. The Scag Liberty Z was the only alternative to match it, sharing the top spot among zero-turn options. Polaris Market Research, meanwhile, noted John Deere was the top brand driving lawn mower growth. The report cited the Deere brand's durability, performance, and overall customer satisfaction as key factors in its popularity. Though thriving on tradition, John Deere is nevertheless geared toward the future. With the rapid rise in popularity of battery-powered alternatives, the company released its first all-electric model in the residential zero-turn Z370R. Push mowers are still wildly popular due to low initial cost and practicality for smaller yards. In this category, a mix of age-old brands and up-and-comers are making their mark. Names like Green Machine, Ego, and Ryobi offer some of the best battery-powered lawn mowers. Still, gas remains the most popular power option, owning roughly 40% of the market. Companies such as Stanley Black & Decker, owner of Craftsman, Cub Cadet, and Troy-Bilt, enjoy the success of multiple brands that have made them leaders in a tight market. Meanwhile, Toro lawn mowers make the cut needing only their four-letter brand to lead in sales and popular opinion. Founded in 1914, Toro proudly proclaims itself as "America's #1 Walk Mower Brand." Its Bloomington, Minnesota facility is one of the five largest manufacturing operations in the nation. Sales in 2024 put it second behind Deere & Co. and well ahead of third-place Husqvarna, according to IBISWorld. Polaris Market Research lists the brand as the fourth most influential growth driver in the market. As they explain, Toro's recent investment in zero-turn and robotic products have set them up for future success as a brand centered on versatility and user-friendliness. Indeed, the company invested in a state-of-the-art camera-based navigation system for its robotic mowers in 2022. Staying true to tradition, though, Toro is a standard-setter in gas push mowers, particularly in its highly-rated Recycler models. TechGearLab ranked the Toro SmartStow Recycler as the best overall among tested mowers. For their part, real-world customers shared that sentiment as 9.7% voted for the Toro self-propelled mower as their favorite in the GreenPal survey, the most for any product. Enjoyed this article? Pro Drivers Give Brad Pitt's 'F1' Movie The Thumbs Up. Its $300 Million Budget Makes It One Of The Most Expensive Films Ever Made
Brad Pitt's much-vaunted Formula One movie, 'F1,' recently received a resounding thumbs up from its potentially toughest audience — F1 drivers. During a screening in Monaco, the film was praised by the sport's speed kings, multiple outlets reported. It was hardly surprising considering some of them have cameos in the movie and it was made in cooperation with F1. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), which reportedly spent $300 million to make the film, and Warner Brothers, the distributor, can only hope the public shares the sentiment and will flock to theaters when it is released internationally at the end of the month. Don't Miss: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — Maximize saving for your retirement and cut down on taxes: . 'Honestly, I enjoyed the whole thing,' driver Carlos Sainz told Reuters in a press conference. 'There were things that really surprised me. Not talking about the story, but the quality of footage they got. It's insane. Honestly insane. That's for me the best part of all of it." Driver Oliver Bearman agreed. 'I think it really depicts in a great way what we go through, in a bit of a Hollywood way, as you would expect, but that makes it really interesting,' he said in the press conference. 'I think the goal of the movie is going to be achieved. I think it's going to be a huge hit and it's going to make people want to watch F1, which is really the goal of it.' The film was co-produced by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton through his Apollo Dawn Films banner. 'Watching Brad drive around at speeds over 180 miles an hour was really impressive to see because it's not something you can just learn overnight,' Hamilton said in pre-recorded comments at a launch event. 'The dedication and the focus that Brad put into this process has been amazing to witness.' Trending: Invest where it hurts — and help millions heal:. Adding to the film's star power is director Joseph Kosinski, known for 'Top Gun: Maverick,' and Javier Bardem as the racing team owner. As with 'Top Gun: Maverick,' remote cameras captured the actors traveling at high speeds. 'When you see Brad driving, that's not acting. He's really concentrating on keeping that car on the track and out of the wall during all those scenes so that's something that you just can't fake,' Kosinski told Reuters. Apple's streaming platform is reportedly not yet profitable. In fact, The Information reported that the company is losing $1 billion per year with its streaming platform, which has 45 million subscribers. The losses are small-change for the company, whose annual profits were $93.7 billion for its fiscal year that ended in September. Still, Apple is not in the business of losing money. The Information reported that Apple is spending around $4.5 billion on content annually, down from $5 billion in past years. Backing one of the most expensive films ever made is an undoubtedly risky move but producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently played down the towering numbers to Deadline, explaining that sponsorship underwrote some of the costs.'We've raised more money for our (filming) car than some Formula 1 teams,' Bruckheimer said. On-car sponsorship included Expensify, while the Hamilton-linked brands Tommy Hilfiger, IWC, and others also contributed, Deadline reported. 'You take that all into consideration and it really drops that number quite a bit lower than what people would think.' When pressed, Bruckheimer balked at getting specific. 'We can't give you a number because that's Apple's money and they can talk about it,' he told Deadline. 'But what I think you can say is it's quite a bit lower than what's been reported.' suggests that to cover its costs, including marketing, 'F1' needs to generate over $750 million in global box office revenues — a tall order even with Hollywood's top talent in Pole Position. Apple does not release financial or subscriber numbers for Apple TV+ alone, but rather for its overall Services sector, which includes Apple TV+ and generated revenue of $26.3 billion for fiscal Q4, representing a 14% year-over-year increase.
