ITV Grace viewers confused by finale plot hole as show's future is revealed

Daily Mirror28-04-2025

Fans of hit ITV crime drama series Grace were left baffled as the show bid farewell at the end of series five following an incident some viewers had to question on social media
Fans of ITV crime drama Grace were left scratching their heads after a glaring plot hole in the season finale. The hit series rounded off the fifth season in style with the criminal trial of a drug lord known only as The Merchant.
Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, played by John Simm, found himself under intense pressure in the drug investigation on Sunday, April 27, while puzzling double murder investigation pushed also pushed Grace's team to the very brink.

The Merchant, played by Josef Davis, had been caught trafficking narcotics into the country. However, the Brighton-based show came under scrutiny after bad guy The Merchant was arrested after border police spotted him.

In earlier scenes, Grace along with his partner, helped officers from border patrol after a van driver was halted hauling a classic car coming into the UK. They tried to explain to him they had found nothing suspicious about it after searching inside and out but the detective was far from convinced.
Drugs were then discovered inside the wheel of a heavy vehicle, kicking off a criminal trial that was the focus of the rest of the episode. However, fans weren't convinced this would have been picked up in reality.
One user on Twitter /X probed: "Obviously I have no direct experience but I'm not convinced that a tyre full of drugs would put a 1600kg car 'well over its usual weight."
Another agreed, adding: "Yes, I thought that - you couldn't spot the weight difference from a few kilos of additions."
A third responded: "There is one point that everyone has overlooked... They went into the trailer with a search dog, why didn't it detect and indicate the presence of the drugs?"

The potential mishap wasn't the only issue fans found with the episode. Elsewhere, viewers took aim at the trial itself.
At one point Grace spoke to a juror outside court. However, a fan noted: "A DC or a PC knows not to speak to a juror let alone a Detective Superintendent."
Despite the issues, fans were pleased to hear that the series is set to return for a sixth helping. It's anticipated that the new run will premiere in 2026, but ITV is yet to confirm any set timings.

John revealed the exciting news recently. He said: "We're about to start filming season six and I always jump ship after two series of any show!
"But everyone on Grace has become like family to me. I've done other jobs since we started, but each time coming back to Grace feels like being back home, because everyone is so familiar."

Loose Women star admits 'I always loathed it' as she shares issue with ITV show

Loose Women presenter Carol McGiffin has hit out at ITV bosses over a rule she was forced to follow during her time on the show, which used to make her "shudder" Carol McGiffin, 64, has criticised ITV's Loose Women bosses for their approach to dressing the show's presenters. She expressed her disapproval of the enforced dress codes and how the presenters transitioned from wearing what they wanted, to being instructed on what to wear for coordination. ‌ She was also left concerned about the amount of clothing waste, claiming that some clothes were discarded even if they'd only been worn once. ‌ Carol had two stints on Loose Women, first from 2000 until 2013, and then again from 2018 until 2023. In an article for Best UK, she stated: "I did Loose Women for almost 20 years and the mandated dress codes used to exhaust me. "We went from wearing our own clothes to being bought stuff to adhere to ludicrous wardrobe policies like 'no arms on show', presumably because our ageing biceps were morphing into bingo wings. "I always loathed being 'dressed' or 'styled' as they preferred to call it. You always had to be coordinated up to the eyeballs in nice slacks, wrap dresses or boiler suits. "It used to make me shudder, nearly as much as the insane amount of waste on unimaginable amounts of clothes that had mostly only been worn once", she added. This isn't the first time Carol has spoken out about Loose Women in recent years. In a conversation with Woman's Own last year, she discussed her reasons for leaving and her feelings about the career move. ‌ She said: "I don't regret leaving, I don't fit in there anymore." Her sentiments mirror a previous statement made to OK! Magazine, where she also said: "Someone, somewhere will be offended by absolutely everything. I'd rather not be on a show that panders to that. It's boring – and I won't be told what I can or can't say." Although she has parted ways with the show, Carol remains in contact with some of her former colleagues, having warmer relationships with a select few. She explained: "I'm still very good friends with a lot of the Loose ladies... Denise Welch popped down here with Lincoln [Townley, her husband] last year and we met them for lunch. I've seen Kaye [Adams], Jane [Moore] and Nadia [Sawalha] a few times." Carol added: "Some, I have nothing in common with. As I said to them, 'You're not friends, you're just people I work with, who I really like.' Which horrified them."

Mars confirms White Maltesers returning after 'huge demand'

White Maltesers, which left the shelves 11 years ago, are officially coming back. They have recently been seen by shoppers, with some wondering if it was leading to an official return. Now Mars Wrigley, which is also responsible for M&Ms, Snickers, Skittles and, of course, Mars bars, has confirmed the news. A packet of the returning White Maltesers (Image: Mars Wrigley) White Maltesers were launched by Mars in 2003 in the UK. However, the chocolates were discontinued in 2014 due to "low sales". Since then, fans have been demanding the treat make a return, with multiple petitions even appearing online. One fan on X (formerly Twitter) said: "@MaltesersUK bring back the white chocolate Maltesers please." Another person posted: "Had a dream last night that white chocolate maltesers were back and I bought a whole crate of them." Now, after what Mars Wrigley has said was "huge public demand", the popular snack is making its "long-awaited comeback". The new product combines the "classic Maltesers crunchy centre with a "thin layer of white chocolate". A spokesperson from Mars Wrigley said: 'We're delighted to bring Maltesers White Chocolate back for the passionate fans who have been anticipating their return for years. "Maltesers is all about encouraging people to look on the light side of life and so definitely try them if you've not done so before.' White Maltesers have been spotted in some UK stores and shared on social media. Facebook account Newfoodsuk posted a picture of a packet with the caption: "Trying the new White Chocolate Maltesers, and yes they are as good as we remember." Fans rushed to the comments with excitement. One said: "I need them right this instant. They are my all-time favourite snack and wanted them back so much." Another said: "Ahhhh these are one of my favourite chocolates everrrrrr, where can I get these! I've been waiting years!!" A third joked: "Waited my whole life for these to come back." Recommended reading: Morrisons is already advertising white Maltesers in three different size packs on its website. Starting at a 30g pack for £1.05, there is also a 74g pack for £2.50 or a 126g sharing bag for £2.95. Maltesers White Chocolate will be widely available from June 16, Mars Wrigley said.
