Texas millionaire killed by Cape buffalo during hunt in Limpopo

A man, who has since been identified as a 52-year-old millionaire from Texas, was killed by a Cape buffalo during a hunting safari in Limpopo on Sunday. A statement by Hans Vermaak of Coenraad Vermaak Safaris (CVS) reads: 'Asher Watkins was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo he was tracking together with one of our professional hunters and one of our trackers.' Vermaak said their hearts go out to his loved ones in this difficult time, in what he called a 'devastating incident'. 'This is a deeply traumatic incident for all involved. The family and our team members who were present at the time are understandably shaken. Out of respect for the family's privacy, as well as our staff members involved, we will not be sharing further details. We kindly ask for privacy and compassion during this time while all those affected come to terms with this tragedy. 'Our deepest condolences go out to Asher's family, especially his mother Gwen, his daughter Savannah, his brother Amon and stepfather, Tony, and to all his loved ones and friends. The family are long-standing friends and part of the CVS family. We hold them close in our thoughts and prayers.' The statement said CVS is co-operating with 'relevant authorities to ensure all procedures are followed'. 'CVS will continue to support the family in the days and weeks ahead, and we are co-operating fully with all the relevant authorities to ensure all procedures are followed.' Cape buffalo CVS' website states that Cape buffalo are 'responsible for several deaths and many injuries to hunters each year'. 'The buffalo is regarded as the most dangerous animal to pursue in Africa, let alone the world,' it states. Information on the website says these buffalo are known to charge unprovoked. 'When they are wounded, it is advisable to be prepared for the worst. The old saying, 'walk slowly and carry a big stick' could not ring truer when describing a follow-up on a buffalo that has a bullet in it. Buffalo hunting is thrilling and exhilarating, placing this formidable species at the top of every hunter's wish list!' It is understood that the hunt took place in the Bambisana hunting concession in Limpopo. According to the website, the concession is bigger than 50 000 acres, and a good place to hunt kudu, sable and Cape buffalo. A hunter at heart Watkins was a managing partner at Watkins Ranch Group in Dallas, Texas. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, according to the website, and posts he made on social media. Caxton Network News contacted Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba to confirm if an inquest has been opened. His comment had not yet been received at the time of publishing. Police chase follows armed robbery at Hazyview ATM

A man was robbed of R7 200 by two armed suspects while withdrawing cash from an ATM at Hazyview Junction Mall in Mpumalanga on Tuesday night. Lowvelder reports that, according to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, the incident occurred at around 21:45. The victim was at a Capitec ATM when two men appeared and pointed a firearm at him. 'They took the R2 200 he had in his hands and then forced him to withdraw another R5 000 before letting him go,' says Ndubane. The man alerted security officers on site. As they responded, the suspects opened fire, wounding one of the guards in the leg. The officers returned fire, injuring one of the suspects, but both men fled the scene in a silver Honda Ballade heading towards the R538. When Hazyview police and security teams pursued the suspects, their vehicle lost control and veered into a ditch near Numbi Park. One suspect managed to flee, but the injured man was cornered and arrested. He was taken to hospital in critical condition. Inside the vehicle, police found an unlicensed firearm, nine live rounds of ammunition and a magazine. Ndubane says the suspect is facing charges of attempted murder, robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. Preliminary investigations revealed that the car had been hijacked in Hillbrow in July, and the firearm was reported stolen in Akasia, Pretoria, in May 2024. The investigation continues. Police have not confirmed whether the stolen cash has been recovered. Breaking news at your fingertips… Follow Caxton Network News on Facebook and join our WhatsApp channel. Nuus wat saakmaak. Kameeldrift murders: No arrests after brutal home invasions

It has been days since two brutal murders shook the Kameeldrift community in Gauteng — yet police have made no arrests. Pretoria Rekord reports that in two separate incidents just days apart, a father of three was gunned down during a home invasion, and another resident was shot and killed on his property. Despite growing pressure from residents and grieving families desperate for justice, both cases remain unsolved. In the early hours of last Monday, 46-year-old Jaco Strydom was shot and killed during a home invasion. According to his family, Strydom woke to the sound of intruders breaking in through a sliding door. In a desperate attempt to protect his wife and three sons, he grabbed a steel pipe and confronted the armed attackers. He was shot during the struggle and collapsed in his son's bedroom. He died a hero, just hours before his youngest child's sixth birthday. Only a few days before Strydom's murder, another man was attacked and killed during a robbery. On the evening of July 24, a violent home invasion in Buffelsdrift, within the Kameeldrift policing area, resulted in the death of Mossie Mostert. One of the attackers was seen on camera walking in his yard just before four suspects — dressed in blue overalls — stormed the property. Mostert's son rushed over and found the house had been ransacked. His 82-year-old father was discovered outside, severely assaulted and tied with wires. He was transported to a hospital in Montana but was pronounced dead on arrival. Only cash and a cellphone are believed to have been stolen. Despite the murders happening in close proximity and within days of each other, no arrests have been made.
