Jazz Chisholm Jr. fuels Yankees win over Cardinals
The Yankees won for the third time in four games while the Cardinals lost their third straight game.
Yankees pitcher Luis Gil (1-1) held St. Louis to one run on four hits in 5 1/3 innings in his third start since coming off the injured list. He walked three and struck out four.
David Bednar closed out the ninth inning to earn his 19th save.
Cardinals pitcher Andre Pallante (6-10) allowed four runs on six hits and three walks in five innings. He struck out eight.
The Yankees broke out to a quick 3-0 lead. Trent Grisham walked leading off the game, went to third on Ben Rice's double and scored on Aaron Judge's groundout.
One out later, Chisholm hit his homer.
In the second inning, Ryan McMahon drew a one-out walk, then singles by Jose Caballero and Rice loaded the bases. But Judge grounded into a forceout to end the threat.
New York increased its lead to 4-0 in the third inning. Chisholm walked, stole second base, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on Jasson Dominguez's single.
Gil cruised through the first four innings aided by three double-play grounders. In the fifth, Ivan Herrera walked leading off and went to third on Nolan Gorman's single.
After Gorman advanced on a passed ball, Gil retired the next three batters.
St. Louis broke through for a run in the sixth inning on doubles by Lars Nootbaar and Masyn Winn.
The Cardinals cut the lead to 4-3 in the seventh inning. Jordan Walker walked and stole second base, then Camilo Doval hit Pedro Pages.
Victor Scott II's double drove in Walker, then Pages scored on Luke Weaver's wild pitch.

BEVERLY HILLS, California, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Director Spike Lee's multi-part docuseries for ESPN Films about former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who sparked a national debate when he protested racial injustice nearly a decade ago, will not be released, the filmmaker and ESPN said. "ESPN, Colin Kaepernick and Spike Lee have collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences," ESPN said in a statement to Reuters on Saturday. "Despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film." Lee told Reuters on Friday that the series was not going to be released. "It's not coming out. That's all I can say," Lee said on the red carpet ahead of the Harold and Carole Pump Foundation dinner, a fundraiser for cancer research and treatment, in Beverly Hills, California. Asked why, the Oscar-winning director declined to elaborate, citing a nondisclosure agreement. "I can't. I signed a nondisclosure. I can't talk about it." Kaepernick ignited a national debate in 2016 when he knelt during the U.S. national anthem to protest systemic racism and police brutality. The 37-year-old has not played in the NFL since that season. Many experts believed his political activism, which triggered a movement that drew the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump, was the key reason teams were wary of signing him. He later filed a collusion grievance against team owners, which was settled with the league in 2019. Representatives for Kaepernick did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Production on the series began in 2022, with Walt Disney-owned (DIS.N), opens new tab ESPN touting it as a "full, first-person account" of Kaepernick's journey that would feature extensive interviews with the player. In September, Puck News reported the project faced delays amid disagreements between Kaepernick and Lee over the direction of the film, and that ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro was open to allowing the filmmakers to shop it elsewhere.

Astros LHP Josh Hader likely out for rest of regular season
August 16 - Houston Astros closer Josh Hader told reporters Saturday he does not expect to pitch again in the regular season because of a left shoulder capsule strain but did not rule out a return for the playoffs. The left-hander was placed on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, the first time he has been on the IL in nine seasons for anything but an illness. His recovery timetable is three weeks of rest, with Hader saying Saturday he will need at least another three weeks to regain arm strength and determined he essentially will be out through the end of September. Hader is 6-2 with a 2.05 ERA over 48 appearances with the Astros this season, while making his sixth All-Star Game appearance. He is 28-for-29 in save opportunities. The 31-year-old has 227 saves in nine big-league seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers (2017-22), San Diego Padres (2022-23) and Astros (2024-25). He is 34-31 with a 2.64 ERA in 468 career relief appearances.
