Amazon fitness product sold almost 4,000,000 times recalled over broken bones

Metro09-06-2025
Nearly four million dumbbells have been recalled after over a hundred reports of injuries including broken bones.
Johnson Health Tech Trading recalled about 3,844,200 units of its BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells that were sold across the US by retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, Costco and DICK's Sporting Goods.
The dumbbells were recalled on Thursday because 'the weight plates can dislodge from the handle during use, posing an impact hazard', according to an independent federal regulatory agency responsible for protecting people from consumer product injuries.
Johnson Health Tech Trading got 12 reports of the plates coming loose but no injuries, according to a notice from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
But Nautilus Inc, which sold 3.7million units, received 337 reports of the plates dislodging that led to 111 injuries including broken toes, concussions, abrasions or contusions.
The two models subject to the recall are BowFlex 552 Adjustable Dumbbells, which adjust from 5 to 52.5 pounds, and BowFlex 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells, which adjust from 10 to 90 pounds.
They were sold in single units and pairs and are black, have handles, weight plates and a molded plastic tray. More Trending
Best Buy, DICK's Sporting Goods and Johnson Fitness & Wellness stores, and Bowflex.com and Amazon.com sold dumbbells from 2004 to April 2024 made by BowFlex Inc, formerly known as Nautilus Inc. They were also sold from May 2024 to May of this year by Johnson Health Tech Trading Inc for $200 to $800.
BowFlex Inc filed for bankruptcy in March 2024, and Johnson Health Tech Trading is handling refund and replacement requests for those dumbbells as well.
Customers should stop using the dumbbells immediately and contact Johnson Health Tech Trading for a refund in the form of a voucher, or a replacement.
It was announced the same day that the CPSC published a recall of about 1.7million U and U+ Window air conditioners over fears that they could harbour mold.

Drinkmate recalls over 100,000 carbonation bottles due to explosion risk

More than 100,000 Drinkmate carbonation bottles are being recalled across the U.S. and Canada because they can explode during use, with several consumers reporting cuts and other impact injuries. According to a Thursday notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the recall covers certain 'Drinkmate 1L Carbonation Bottles' sold individually or as part of the sparkling water maker's 'OmniFizz' starter kits. That includes about 106,200 bottles in the U.S., the safety regulator noted, as well as 5,000 in Canada. Drinkmate has received eight reports of these now-recalled bottles exploding during use in the U.S., the CPSC noted — four of which resulted in cuts, impact injuries and hearing damage. And per Health Canada, one additional case of a bottle shattering during use and causing some bruises has been reported in Canada. It wasn't immediately clear what's causing these bottles to explode — but Thursday's recall noted that the issue was limited to Drinkmate's 1-liter bottles with expiration dates between January 2026 and October 2026. The products have a clear polyethylene terephthalate body and plastic caps and bases in red, blue, white and black colors. In addition to Drinkmate's website, these bottles were sold by major retailers — including Walmart, Amazon, Target and Home Depot — between April 2023 and October 2024. Consumers in possession of the now-recalled products are urged to stop using them immediately — and contact Drinkmate for a free replacement. Those impacted can register for the recall and learn more on Drinkmate's website. To receive a free replacement bottle, you will need to fill out an online form and upload a picture of the product with the word 'recall' written on it in permanent marker, and throw it away per the recall's instructions.

US retailer Best Buy weighs boosting India headcount, Subramanian says (Aug 8)

CHENNAI, Aug 8 (Reuters) - U.S. retailer Best Buy (BBY.N), opens new tab is weighing the expansion of its India headcount to primarily add more digital and technology roles, Nithya Subramanian, senior director, data & AI COE, told Reuters. Best Buy employs around 350 people at its global capability centre in Bengaluru, better known as "India's Silicon Valley". That headcount could grow to approximately 500 over the next few months, Subramanian said on the sidelines of an event in Chennai. Many global companies have been setting up offices or boosting their presence in India to tap its growing talent pool. GCCs have been evolving into high-value innovation hubs from low-cost back offices in recent years. They now support their parent firms in vital functions including operations, finance, and research and development. "We will be hiring across the functions," Subramanian said. Best Buy, known for selling electronic items such as laptops, kitchen appliances and cameras, is looking to hire AI engineers, software engineers and product managers in India, according to its LinkedIn page. "Even if you look at the global strength, I think we are growing leaps and bounds in India," Subramanian said, noting that the Bengaluru office is Best Buy's largest tech hub. Best Buy operates more than 1,000 stores in the United States and Canada, where it employs over 85,000 people. It does not have retail operations in India. Another U.S. retailer, Costco Wholesale (COST.O), opens new tab, is gearing up to open its first India GCC, sources told Reuters last month. India's GCC market is expected to reach between $99 billion and $105 billion by 2030, from $64.6 billion in fiscal 2024, a report by industry body Nasscom and consulting firm Zinnov said.
