Amazon fitness product sold almost 4,000,000 times recalled over broken bones

Nearly four million dumbbells have been recalled after over a hundred reports of injuries including broken bones. Johnson Health Tech Trading recalled about 3,844,200 units of its BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells that were sold across the US by retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, Costco and DICK's Sporting Goods. The dumbbells were recalled on Thursday because 'the weight plates can dislodge from the handle during use, posing an impact hazard', according to an independent federal regulatory agency responsible for protecting people from consumer product injuries. Johnson Health Tech Trading got 12 reports of the plates coming loose but no injuries, according to a notice from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). But Nautilus Inc, which sold 3.7million units, received 337 reports of the plates dislodging that led to 111 injuries including broken toes, concussions, abrasions or contusions. The two models subject to the recall are BowFlex 552 Adjustable Dumbbells, which adjust from 5 to 52.5 pounds, and BowFlex 1090 Adjustable Dumbbells, which adjust from 10 to 90 pounds. They were sold in single units and pairs and are black, have handles, weight plates and a molded plastic tray. More Trending Best Buy, DICK's Sporting Goods and Johnson Fitness & Wellness stores, and and sold dumbbells from 2004 to April 2024 made by BowFlex Inc, formerly known as Nautilus Inc. They were also sold from May 2024 to May of this year by Johnson Health Tech Trading Inc for $200 to $800. BowFlex Inc filed for bankruptcy in March 2024, and Johnson Health Tech Trading is handling refund and replacement requests for those dumbbells as well. Customers should stop using the dumbbells immediately and contact Johnson Health Tech Trading for a refund in the form of a voucher, or a replacement. It was announced the same day that the CPSC published a recall of about 1.7million U and U+ Window air conditioners over fears that they could harbour mold. Popular Dumbbells Sold at Costco Recalled After Concussions, Broken Toes

Popular fitness equipment that was sold at Costco and other major retailers has been recalled after more than 100 injury reports. The item is so popular that at least 3.7 million have been sold, yet the recall notice warns of an "impact hazard." The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on its website. Specifically, the product under recall is BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells. "Johnson Health Tech Trading Recalls BowFlex Adjustable Dumbbells Due to Impact Hazard, Including 3.7 Million Sold by Nautilus Inc.," the announcement says. According to Fox Business, in addition to Costco, the product was sold at Best Buy, Dick's Sporting Goods, and through Amazon and BowFlex's website. "The weight plates can dislodge from the handle during use, posing an impact hazard," the recall notice warns. It adds: "Johnson Health Tech Trading has received 12 reports of the plates dislodging during use with no injuries for units it sold. Nautilus received 337 reports of the plates dislodging during use for units it sold, including 111 resulting in injuries such as concussions, abrasions, broken toes or contusions." The remedy is listed as "refund" and "replace." The recall notice is dated June 5. "This recall involves the BowFlex branded Model 552, 52.5 LB Adjustable Dumbbells and Model 1090, 90 LB Adjustable Dumbbells. The dumbbells were sold in pairs and single units in the color black and include handles, weight plates and a molded plastic tray," the recall notice adds. "The model 552 dumbbells adjust from 5 to 52.5 pounds and the model 1090 adjusts from 10 to 90 pounds using manual adjustment knobs while the weights are nested in the base. The model and serial number are printed on a sticker located on the bottom of the molded plastic tray," it adds. The government website lists affected serial and model numbers. "BowFlex Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2024. Johnson Health Tech Trading has agreed to provide a remedy for the 552 and 1090 adjustable dumbbells sold by BowFlex Inc., (formerly Nautilus Inc.), prior to May 2024 as a part of this recall," the notice Dumbbells Sold at Costco Recalled After Concussions, Broken Toes first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 9, 2025
