Pi Coin rebounds 80% after 60% drop amid global adoption surge

Pi Coin, the cryptocurrency launched by Pi Network, has surged 80% to $1.29 following a dramatic 60% drop after its mainnet launch. The token, which saw a peak of $1.97 on its first trading day, plunged to a low of $0.737 before rebounding in recent sessions.
The sharp fluctuation in Pi Coin's price has raised concerns among investors about its long-term stability. However, data from CoinMarketCap shows strong buying interest, with Pi Coin recently hitting a high of $1.52 and support levels around $1.10.
Experts suggest that if the token maintains its position above the $1.10 mark, it could see further gains, while a drop below this level may result in a retest of the $0.94–$1.00 range.

Growing User Base and Global Expansion
Despite the volatility, Pi Network continues to expand its user base. The platform, launched in 2019 by Stanford Ph.Ds Nicolas Kokkalis and Chengdiao Fan, has over 60 million members. Pi Network's mobile-first mining mechanism allows users to earn Pi Coins by simply tapping a button on their mobile devices every 24 hours.
The network has gained significant momentum, especially in India, where it has surpassed 100 million downloads on the Google Play Store. Pi Coin has been listed on several major exchanges, including OKX, Bitget, Bitrue, HTX, and BitMart, further increasing its accessibility to international markets.
To further boost adoption, Bitget has launched a $60,000 Pi Coin airdrop, running until March 3, while BitMart is offering a $3,000 USDT reward for 300 lucky users.
Challenges and criticism
Pi Coin's launch was met with skepticism from some quarters. Bybit CEO Ben Zhou referred to Pi Network as a scam, citing concerns that the project targeted elderly investors. Pi Network has vehemently denied these allegations, emphasizing its six-year development process. Another factor contributing to the token's initial decline was a wave of sell-offs from early adopters, a trend common in new cryptocurrency launches. The broader downturn in the crypto market, with Bitcoin and major altcoins in a decline, also contributed to Pi Coin's early struggles.
Outlook for Pi Coin
While Pi Coin has made a significant recovery, its future remains uncertain. Technical analysts believe that if the token can stay above the $1.10 support level, it may see further upside. However, ongoing skepticism and the volatility of the crypto market could lead to more fluctuations in its price.
As Pi Network continues to develop its ecosystem, the coming weeks will be critical in determining whether this recovery is the beginning of a long-term uptrend or simply a short-term bounce.

Bitcoin hits $124K on Fed cut hopes

Bitcoin hit a record high on Thursday as increasing expectations for easier monetary policy from the Federal Reserve added to tailwinds from recently announced financial reforms. The world's largest crypto-asset by market capitalisation climbed as much as 0.9% to $124,002.49 in early Asia trading, surpassing its previous peak hit in July. On the day, the second-largest crypto token, ether, hit $4,780.04, the highest level since late 2021. Bitcoin's rally is being powered by increasing certainty of Fed rate cuts, sustained institutional buying and moves by the Trump administration to ease investment in crypto assets, said IG market analyst Tony Sycamore. "Technically, a sustained break above $125k could propel BTC to $150,000," he wrote in a note. Bitcoin has risen nearly 32% so far in 2025 on the back of long-sought regulatory wins for the sector following President Donald Trump's return to the White House. Trump has called himself the "crypto president" and his family has made a series of forays into the sector over the past year.

South African rand takes breather after recovery rally

JOHANNESBURG: The South African rand softened in early trade on Thursday, after a recovery rally in the past two sessions when the dollar weakened. At 0641 GMT the rand traded at 17.56 against the dollar, about 0.3% weaker than Wednesday's close. The local currency has gained more than 1% in the last two days, boosted by weaker dollar after the world's largest economy reported tame inflation data, raising investor expectations of an interest rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve in September. 'Had it not been for the wave of USD selling due to the shifting expectations towards more rate cuts, the ZAR would not have performed as it has,' said ETM Analytics in a research note. 'Bitcoin has surged to fresh record levels, stock markets have enjoyed the shift in sentiment, and commodity prices have maintained their buoyant levels. This is good news for the ZAR and has helped the local currency appreciate against a weakening USD,' said the note. With no major local data releases left this week, the rand is expected to take its cue from global drivers. South Africa's benchmark 2035 government bond was flat in early deals, with the yield down half a basis point to 9.605%.

Dollar struggles as Fed rate-cut bets build; bitcoin soars to record high

TOKYO: The U.S. dollar languished at multi-week lows against major peers on Thursday as traders ramped up bets for the Federal Reserve to resume cutting interest rates next month. Rising expectations for Fed easing combined with increasing institutional cryptocurrency investment powered bitcoin to a fresh record peak. Australia's dollar gained after data showed the labour market was surprisingly resilient. It was a slightly different story in the U.S. where Fed rhetoric has turned overall more dovish of late on signs of a cooling labour market, while President Donald Trump's tariffs have not added to price pressures in a significant way just yet. Traders see a Fed rate cut on September 17 as a near certainty, according to LSEG data, and even lay around 7% odds on a super-sized half-point reduction. 'For the markets, it's not even a matter of if the Fed cuts interest rates in September, it's a question of how much,' said Kyle Rodda, an analyst at 'Signs of a downturn in the labour market have pushed futures to bake in a series of rate cuts before the end of the year.' The Fed also continues to be under intense political pressure to ease. Dollar extends losses Trump has repeatedly criticised Fed Chair Jerome Powell for not cutting rates sooner, even threatening to oust him before Powell's term expires in May. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday called for a 'series of rate cuts,' and said the Fed could kick off the policy easing with a half-point cut. Bessent also said the Bank of Japan had gotten 'behind the curve' by delaying rate hikes. The U.S. dollar dropped 0.7% to 146.38 yen, its weakest since July 24. Sterling edged up enough to reach its highest since July 24 at $1.3590. The euro hovered at $1.1712, just below Wednesday's peak of $1.1730, a level last seen on July 28. The U.S. dollar index, which measures the currency against those three rivals and three other major counterparts, eased slightly to 97.673. It dropped some 0.8% over the previous two sessions, having dipped to 97.626 on Wednesday for the first time since July 28. A weaker U.S. dollar, the spectre of political interference in central bank policy, and the increase in investor risk appetite amid Fed easing prospects all converged to buoy bitcoin to its first record peak since July 14. The world's leading cryptocurrency pushed as high as $124,480.82 in the latest session, before last changing hands at $123,538.31. Bitcoin was already underpinned by increased institutional money flows this year in the wake of a spate of regulatory changes spearheaded by Trump, who has billed himself the 'cryptocurrency president.' In the latest move, an executive order last week paved the way to allow crypto assets in 401(k) retirement accounts. 'Corporate treasuries like MicroStrategy and Block Inc. continue to buy bitcoin,' said IG analyst Tony Sycamore. 'Technically, a sustained break above $125,000 could propel bitcoin to $150,000.' The Australian dollar gained as much as 0.4% to the highest since July 28 at $0.65685. Australian employment rebounded in July as firms took on more full-time workers, pulling the jobless rate down from a 3-1/2-year high. The upbeat report implied there was less urgency for the Reserve Bank of Australia to follow up this week's rate cut with another in September.
