‘It keeps me on my toes': ‘St. Denis Medical' star Allison Tolman on walking a fine line between zany and ‘incredibly heartfelt'

'I've always wanted to do a mockumentary,' admits Allison Tolman about what immediately drew her to St. Denis Medical. The self-professed Christopher Guest fan had heard word about the project and told her team to get their hands on the script. Once they did, the premiere episode by Eric Ledgin and Justin Spitzer did not disappoint: 'I was already pretty excited about it just based on the format, but then, read the first script and was like, 'Oh, this is really lovely. The jokes are funny, the characters are interesting, they really know how to make this format sing,'' she recounts. (Watch our full interview above).
Tolman plays supervising nurse Alex in the new workplace comedy series, which is set in a regional hospital in Oregon. Though the character struggles with setting work-life boundaries, especially considering that she has two young children at home, Alex serves as the calm-ish center to the goofier characters around her. 'It can be lonely to be the straight man in a comedy like this because you're not the one who gets the big moments or the big jokes or the big set pieces,' the actress says. But the role does have its unique attributes, too. 'I really feel a kinship with the audience and I really feel like the responsibility and the honor of being their touchstone. … The joy of Alex for me is that she's really aware of how all of this is coming off and she's really aware of the fact that she's being observed at all times,' she adds.

Tolman is a television veteran whose credits include Fargo, for which she earned an Emmy nomination, Why Women Kill, and Gaslit with Sean Penn and Julia Roberts. "I've been doing this long enough now and I've had enough ups and downs that I don't really trust anything,' says Tolman, adding that she felt passionate about St. Denis Michael, but that 'specialness doesn't always reflect in how things are received and how they're promoted.' She says she felt like 'the skeptic' when other folks on the series were optimistic about the huge prospects of the comedy right out of the gate. Still, her own perception started to change when she saw how supportive NBC was of the show. 'The parents are betting on us,' she describes.
SEE Inside the success of 'St. Denis Medical': 'If you're a comedy and you're not trying to make people laugh, I don't think you're doing it right'
St. Denis Medical features an ensemble of comedy pros, including David Alan Grier and Wendi McLendon-Covey. Tolman says 'every day is a delight, we really do like each other a lot, we really do have fun.' Despite the incredible improvisation chops amongst the cast, the actress shares, 'We don't break that much, we don't improvise as much as you might expect, but we have a great time between the lines.' The series also deftly balances the zaniness of the storylines with a healthy dose of heart. 'We'll be doing a crazy scene where there's a cat loose and then 30 minutes later, you're doing this incredibly heartfelt talking head that's wrapping up the entire episode,' describes the performer, adding, 'It keeps me on my toes. It reminds me that I can do both things, that I can do comedy and I can do drama.'
One of Tolman's standout episodes of St. Denis Medical is the 10th, 'People Just Say Stuff Online,' in which Alex gets severely rankled about a patient review on Yelp that describes nurse Alex as 'snippy.' Desperate to find a different Alex who works in the hospital who the review could be describing, Tolman's Alex finds and flips out at another, quite lovely Alex in the geriatric ward. The actress says she enjoyed getting to play that scene in particular: 'I was really happy that I did have an episode where I got to be the one who was not okay. I was not holding it together well. … She was the unreasonable one and she was the one who was over the top. It was great, it was fun to play, and I thought it looked great when I finally saw it.'
Tolman has a few favorite moments from the first season. First, she references '50 cc's of Kindness,' in which 'Matt [Mekki Leeper] and Alex are trying to convince the prisoners that they have a lot in common,' because it 'is so funny and was so much fun to shoot' and was also the first time she felt like she and the show had found its groove. Then she mentions 'Listen to Your Ladybugs' about breast cancer screenings, as well as the season finale, 'This Place Is Our Everything.' Of the latter, she says, 'I'm really proud of the way that the monologue at the end of Season 1 turned out. … That was another day where I got to be, like, vasectomy jokes, stunts, and then dial it in and do this great monologue that Eric had written and do some deep, real scene work.'

Paige Drummond's ‘Dreamy' Honeymoon Photos Will Melt Your Heart

A little over two weeks after getting married in Oklahoma, Paige Drummond-Andersen and David Andersen went on a honeymoon to Costa Rica. She shared some fun pictures of their adventures on Instagram. And to make the vacation even dreamier, several members of the Drummond clan—including Paige's mother, Ree—commented! Read on to see pictures from Paige's honeymoon and discover the passport problem that almost stopped them from getting there. On Sunday, June 1, Paige, age 25, posted a variety of photos of her and her new husband, David, on the beaches of Costa Rica with the caption being 'photo dump! Pura vida!!' The snapshots included them golfing, eating, drinking, going on a boat ride, stargazing and of course, sunbathing. Following that initial posting, Paige's mother, Ree Drummond, a.k.a. The Pioneer Woman, her sister and brother joined in on the conversation and shared their love and support for the newlyweds. 'DREAMY!!! Welcome home, you two. Now the real fun begins,' Ree commented. While Alex, Paige's older sister, wrote, 'FAB but so glad you're in Dallas now.' Paige's younger brother, Bryce, also chimed in, writing, 'Love the yella' on the carousel of photos. It was the first time Paige had posted since her wedding day in May. Just a few days after their wedding, Paige and her husband David were getting ready to leave for their honeymoon when they discovered that he no longer had his passport. 'We were supposed to leave on Monday morning, but David's passport actually dropped off the face of the earth,' Paige wrote on her Instagram story in May. Thankfully, the universe was looking out for the newlyweds because according to the youngest Drummond daughter, 'he got one in less than 24 hours' thanks to the Dallas passport agency. 'An eventful first 48 hours of marriage to say the least,' Paige joked. The Pioneer Woman herself also poked fun at the incident, saying, "I gave Paige a 100% guarantee that the second she was lying on the beach on their honeymoon, she'd laugh about this wrinkle," according to her website. Ree has been married to her husband Ladd since 1996, and they have four kids together. They also recently became grandparents after their eldest child, Alex, welcomed her daughter, Sophia, with her husband, Mauricio Scott, in December 2024. Since then, Ree and Alex have shared several photos of baby Sofia, and they have also shared a ton of photos of Paige's bridal journey, including things like dress shopping, bridal parties and of course the actual wedding. 'Nothing sweeter than watching my sister marry the man of her dreams,' Alex wrote on Instagram in May. 'Welcome to the fam, Dave!' Chris Pratt And Nick Offerman Mourn Jonathan Joss After Tragic Fatal Shooting

and are mourning the loss of their former "Parks & Rec" co-star , who died Sunday in a tragic shooting in San Antonio, Texas. Jonathan Joss was best known to many fans for his recurring role as Chief Ken Hotate on the hit NBC comedy, and for voicing John Redcorn on "King of the Hill" throughout the late '90s and early 2000s. According to San Antonio police, officers were dispatched to the scene of a shooting around 7 p.m. on June 1. When they arrived, they found Joss lying near the roadway. Life-saving efforts were attempted while waiting for emergency medical services, but paramedics ultimately pronounced him dead at the scene. Police later detained a suspect, identified as 56-year-old Sigfredo Alvarez Cejam, who allegedly fled the scene in a vehicle. PEOPLE confirmed that Cejam was Joss's neighbor. He has been booked on murder charges as the investigation remains ongoing. News of Joss's sudden passing has sent shockwaves through Hollywood, especially among his former castmates. Chris Pratt, who starred as Andy Dwyer on "Parks and Recreation," shared a heartfelt message on his Instagram Stories following the announcement. 'Damn. RIP Jonathan. Always such a kind dude … Sad to see. Prayers up. Hug your loved ones,' Pratt wrote. Nick Offerman, who portrayed Ron Swanson on the beloved series, also reacted to the heartbreaking news, telling PEOPLE that the cast has been leaning on each other in the wake of the tragedy. 'The cast has been texting together about it all day and we're just heartbroken,' Offerman shared. 'Jonathan was such a sweet guy and we loved having him as our Chief Ken Hotate. A terrible tragedy.' Joss's role on "Parks and Recreation" quickly became a fan favorite. As Chief Ken Hotate, he brought both humor and heart to Pawnee's fictional Wamapoke Tribe, appearing in several standout episodes throughout the show's run. Off-screen, he was widely remembered by co-stars and colleagues for his kindness, humility, and infectious spirit. In addition to his work in comedy, Joss made a significant impact in animation. He took over the role of John Redcorn in "King of the Hill" during its third season after the original voice actor, Victor Aaron, tragically passed away in 1996. Joss's performance helped define the character for a generation of fans. The creators of "King of the Hill," Mike Judge, Greg Daniels, and Saladin Patterson, also shared a statement. "Jonathan Joss brought 'King of the Hill''s John Redcorn to life for over a dozen seasons, including in the upcoming revival," they said. "His voice will be missed at 'King of the Hill,' and we extend our deepest condolences to Jonathan's friends and family." As tributes continue to pour in following the tragic death of actor Jonathan Joss, the San Antonio Police Department has responded to growing online speculation regarding the nature of the fatal shooting. On Monday night, SAPD released a statement via social media refuting claims that the crime was motivated by hate. 'Despite online claims of this being a hate crime, currently the investigation has found no evidence to indicate that Mr. Joss's murder was related to his sexual orientation,' the department wrote, per Fox 7. Authorities emphasized that they take such allegations seriously and confirmed that investigators have 'thoroughly reviewed all available information' related to the case. The department added that should any new evidence surface, the charges against the suspect, identified as Joss's neighbor, will be updated accordingly. The investigation remains ongoing. As friends, fans, and former castmates continue to process the loss, many are remembering Joss for the joy he brought to every set and the warmth he shared with those around him.

Jimmy Fallon Gives Dakota Johnson a Tissue to Cover Her Cleavage, Jokes He'll Sell It on eBay

Dakota Johnson had some last-minute regrets about her outfit choice on 'The Tonight Show' on Monday night, so Jimmy Fallon provided a quick fix in the form of a tissue. The NBC host then joked that he'd sell it online afterward. The moment came right at the start of Johnson's appearance in support of her new film 'Materialists,' which hits theaters on June 13. As she sat down, she looked downward and uttered 'Oh god' as she seemed to realize her skirt rode up a bit high and the neckline of her top showed a lot, given the angle of the camera. 'This is the wrong outfit,' Johnson said with a chuckle. 'I think it's perfect, just don't move' Fallon replied, prompting Johnson to joke that 'my eyes are up here.' The duo then recalled their experiences with the 'SNL50' celebration, with the actress noting that she wasn't actually in the crowd but got to watch from under the bleachers, where 'SNL' boss Lorne Michaels watches. But, as the conversation progressed, Johnson was once again distracted by how exposed she felt. 'Tell me if there's a problem,' she requested. Fallon swore there wasn't a problem — just 'almost' a problem — but Johnson then jokingly asked for a blanket from anyone in the room to help cover up. So, the comedian offered her the next best thing he had: a tissue. Johnson proceeded to tuck it in and indeed, the tissue covered everything. But, when Fallon lamented ruining her outfit, the actress opted to take the tissue out and handed it back to him. 'Do you want to keep this?' Johnson asked, to which Fallon joked: 'I'm putting this on eBay this evening.' Johnson managed to navigate the rest of the interview without triggering NBC's standards department too much, save for the stray f-bomb. That wasn't the only funny moment between these two stars, though. While talking about the 50th anniversary special, Johnson said she saw her 'Materialists' co-star Pedro Pascal behind the scenes as he was preparing for the 'Domingo: Vow Renewal' sketch. Meryl Streep was also backstage for another sketch, and though Johnson had never met the iconic actress, she said hi. 'She reached for me and kissed my hand,' Johnson shared, earning a theatrical gasp from the studio audience. Watch the full NBC interview above.
