Air India To Insure Passengers On All Flights For Next Few Months After Ahmedabad Tragedy
Last Updated: A London-bound Air India Flight AI-171 crashed into a residential area of Ahmedabad on Thursday, killing all but one of its 242 passengers and over 30 on the ground. Following the devastating Air India accident that killed more than 260 people, Air India has decided to insure every passenger on all its flights as a precautionary measure, according to a source in the airline. As per the source, each passenger will be covered for approximately Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. This move will remain in effect for at least the next few months. Three days after the tragic crash of Air India flight AI-171 in Ahmedabad, which has so far claimed over 270 lives, hospital authorities on Sunday confirmed the identification of 47 victims through DNA matching, including that of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. Rupani was among the 242 passengers and crew members on board the London-bound Air India flight AI-171 that crashed on Thursday. Only one passengers managed to miraculously survive the crash on that day, while more than 30 people were killed on the ground. Due to the severe condition of many bodies, as they are burnt or disfigured, authorities are relying on DNA matching for identification. '"A total of 47 plane crash victims have been identified so far through DNA matching. Of these, the bodies of 24 victims have been handed over to their respective families. These deceased were from Rajasthan and different parts of Gujarat," Additional Civil Superintendent Dr. Rajnish Patel told reporters. Meanwhile, Air India on Sunday said it is working closely with other Tata group companies to provide every possible assistance to the families and loved ones of the plane crash victims. The airline in a statement also said that over 400 family members have reached Ahmedabad and are being assisted by its teams on the ground. It had earlier promised complete transparency in the investigation into establishing the cause of the accident. PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, visited the crash site to assess the situation on Sunday. He was briefed on the sequence of events and interacted with the injured at the Civil Hospital. 'I am very pained by the enormity of the tragedy. Everybody is sad. It is our duty to share grief and express our feelings for the victims," Mishra told reporters. Authorities announced Sunday that the second black box, the cockpit voice recorder, had been recovered. This may offer investigators more clues about what went wrong. There were 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese and a Canadian on board the flight, as well as 12 crew members.

Indian-Origin Man Dies In Australia Days After Cops Kneeled On His Neck During Arrest
Last Updated: The violent arrest took place after Kundi, who had been drinking, was involved in a public argument with his wife A 42-year-old Indian-origin man, Gaurav Kundi, has died after sustaining critical brain injuries during a violent police restraint in the eastern suburbs of Adelaide, Australia. During the arrest, an officer had allegedly drove a knee into Kundi's neck. Kundi, a father of two from Modbury North, was hospitalised on May 29 with severe brain injuries and passed away on June 12, according to The Australia Today. The violent arrest took place after Kundi, who had been drinking, was involved in a public argument with his wife, Amritpal Kaur. During the argument, Kundi lay on the ground and reportedly pushed Kaur slightly. Police officers who arrived on the scene believed it was a domestic violence situation and restrained Kundi. Kaur recorded part of the arrest on her phone, capturing Kundi saying, 'I didn't do anything wrong," as officers pinned him down. She later said she stopped filming after an officer placed a knee on Kundi's neck, similar to the 2020 George Floyd case in the United States. Kaur also claimed that during the arrest, Kundi's head was slammed against a police vehicle and the road, causing him to lose consciousness. Kundi was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where doctors confirmed severe damage to his brain and neck nerves. Despite efforts to save him, he died nearly ten days later. South Australian Police Commissioner Grant Stevens had defended the officers involved, stating that bodycam footage showed they followed proper training. 'At this stage, there is nothing to support any allegations that a knee was placed on the person's neck during the incident," he had stated, also dismissing claims of racial motivation. Police said Kundi had violently resisted arrest after leaving his home intoxicated. Acting Assistant Commissioner John DeCandia said investigations are ongoing but expressed confidence that the officers acted appropriately based on initial evidence. South Australia Premier Peter Malinauskas also backed the police, acknowledging the difficult nature of their work. Location : Australia First Published: June 15, 2025, 23:11 IST

Air India plane crash: Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan to chair high-level meet tomorrow on civil aviation security
New Delhi [India], June 15 (ANI): A high-level committee on civil aviation security, headed by the Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, is scheduled to meet tomorrow afternoon. The meeting is being convened in connection with the recent Ahmedabad plane crash, sources said. The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed and rammed into a doctor's hostel shortly after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. The crash claimed 241 lives out of the 242 people onboard, which included 230 passengers and 12 crew members. The lone survivor, Vishwashkumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries. At least 33 people, including local residents on the ground and MBBS students, have also died till today as the plane rammed into the doctor's hostel after the crash. Earlier on Sunday, Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said that the DNA of 45 deceased have been matched with their relatives, and confirmed that the death toll in the Ahmedabad plane crash stands at 274. 'Till now, 45 DNA samples have matched. Around 274 people have lost their lives in the heart-wrenching incident,' state's Health Minister said. He also said that the funeral of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who was among the victims, will be held tomorrow with full state honours. Patel stated, 'CM Bhupendra Patel informed Vijay Rupani's family about the DNA samples matching as soon as the information was received... Tomorrow, at 11.30 am, the family will receive Vijay Rupani's mortal remains from the Civil Hospital. The mortal remains will be taken to Rajkot by air and reach there at 2. The funeral will be carried out at 5 pm and the last rites will be completed at 6 pm with state honours.' The state Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) unit and the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) team are working to match more DNA samples. According to Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), HP Sanghavi, DNA examination is critically needed to identify the victims of the tragic crash, citing that the extreme heat from the blaze that erupted after the crash had made the traditional method of identification ineffective.
